Managing a conflict of interest

Conflict of interest

Hi Adrian. Did you read the above section about Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy, which requires you to avoid editing articles you have a professional connection to, and to disclose such a connection? Hi Belbury, I did read the conflict of interest policy and I don’t think it applies here. I am an avid Sunderland fan and frequent reader of A Love Supreme. My dad also read the magazine in the 90s and I have become quite knowledgeable on the fanzine. I am also writing an assignment on A Love Supreme for a university course and when I was doing my research I looked at the wiki page as I always use wiki as my first point of reference for research and info and noticed a lot of inaccuracies on the ALS wiki page from what I understood. So I decided to try and fix them for other Sunderland fans. It is my first time editing a Wiki page so I used some of the info I’d gathered from internet searches and reading through old magazines and web articles to try and make the wiki more comprehensive. Then suggestions and citations started to appear on the page and I was quite surprised and impressed by how much detail wiki went into and required. There may be some errors when getting used to all the rules and regulations, however I feel like the page has been changed for the better. I’ve added links wherever possible to support the changes. No. I am not!

In my research on ALS I'm unaware of anyone of that name who has ever worked there. Looking through magazine contributors in old issues I have I can't see that name anywhere. I have googled "Adrian Thompson A Love Supreme" and nothing comes up!

Have you tried to contact ALS to see if I'm telling the truth? I'm beginning to think that you are persecuting me for no reason when I'm just a student and fan of Sunderland just updating a wiki page. I suggest that you email ALS and ask them if they have ever had any staff called Adrian Thompson. Their email is info@a-love-supreme.com

I'm not a Wikipedia staff member, I'm just a regular volunteer editor.

https://gb.kompass.com/c/a-love-supreme/gb55044855 lists an Adrian Thompson as the managing director, although that does seem to be the only place to do so.

Can you clarify the origin of photographs like File:9 Awards.jpg and File:RedmenTV using ALS to interview Sobs and Bally.jpg, which were taken at the company's office? Did you take these yourself, or were they provided by ALS? Belbury (talk) 16:52, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what that kompass website is, but I just called the ALS Office on 0191 5654422 and asked to speak to Adrian Thompson and they said they didn't know who Adrian Thompson was. They then asked my name and I said Adrian Thompson and they laughed and hung up. I guess they must think that was very strange. But i guess the lengths Wiki go to is strange too. The images were on ALS social media and the ALS website and i put them there to prove what i wrote was true after you began editing the site and asking questions.

Is there a way to contact Wiki about this as it is proving very difficult to just update a page with facts

I'm happy to believe that it's a coincidence that a business listings website includes your name in error as the fanzine's managing director, if that's what you're saying here.

If you've taken photos from the ALS website and social media, you'll need to get their permission to republish them on Wikimedia Commons as your own work. See commons:Commons:Volunteer Response Team for how to confirm that permission, if you are able to get it. (If you aren't, then the images will most likely have to be deleted.) It surely must be a coincidence, it's not a reputable website. If it was on companies house I could understand it.

I'll email ALS now and explain what's going on and ask them about the images. They may not be open again until Monday, but i'll put their reply here...

I’m a media student and a big fan of A Love Supreme. My dad used to buy ALS in the 90s and he’s passed the passion for SAFC down to me.

I have been researching the history of ALS for an assignment as part of my course but when I looked on your wiki for info there was very little on and what was on there wasn’t accurate. So when my research was complete I started updating the A Love Supreme wiki and as a result the editors on wiki asked me to verify certain things. To do this I used some of the images from your website and social media about your awards and history.

However I need permission to use these. I didn’t realise. Could you have a look at the wiki page and check the images I have used of your HQ, awards, etc are ok for me to use and give me permission please?

You'll need to follow the process I linked to at Commons:Volunteer Response Team to confirm this permission. An email has to be sent directly from an ALS address to Commons, or a page made on their website, listing the images that they own the rights to, and explicitly saying what licence they are releasing them under. (It's not clear from the email quoted above whether ALS are releasing the photos for free reuse anywhere in the world, or just for this one Wikipedia page.)
