Asareel, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful message. Please accept my apologies for my tardiness in replying as I was rather tired last night after a long night at work-the same is true tonight. I've see if I can make it to the library this weekend to find some sources that might be helpful. Best wishes and I hope all is well!--A.S. Brown (talk) 10:43, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

December roses

[edit]
December songs

Thank you for spreading good spirits wherever I see your name on my watchlist! Anything you could do for Debussy? I thought of you when I took a pic of roses in December. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:42, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for adding there. Today, we sing for a Marian feast, I learned that Yvonne Ciannella died, the soprano who impressed me in my first night at the opera, and as she died in March, sadly no Main page reverence is possible, - at least she had a good DYK, at a time when opera singers were considered interesting. I'm proud today that Christiane Hörbiger made it to that corner, and happy that we celebrate the birthday of Jean Sibelius again. - I heard an excellent concert yesterday, by Tenebrae, and a short excerpt of them singing "Deo gracias" is also linked from my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:53, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Today was a day rich in music, with two new pictures, and also rich in WP:QAI contributions on the Main page: the TFA, 2 DYK and 2 RD with members as principal editors. The church pictured there (not by me, nice snow dust and tall evergreen) comes with memories, detailed on my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:45, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Latest pics, snow even here. Today my talk has a DYK that was planned for 22 November, among the recent deaths the author of Duck, Death and the Tulip, and now a choir pic of "our" concert last Sunday, likely to become next year's lead image. Enjoy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:07, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ARoseWolf, I over read on another user talk page your plans for the Winter and I found it so fascinating and wanted to wish you well during this upcoming period. Also, you talk about "rolling the r" in your name. I for the life of me can not do this and have tried everything. My daughter does it and rubs it in my face. I truly believe it might have something to do with genetics and have always wanted to do more research on it, like it is a physical characteristic like lobed ears and being able to curl your tongue. Cheers! Malerooster (talk) 17:35, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Malerooster, Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words. My daughter can roll r's but her father can't. She rubs it in his face too. Trust me, I do not get upset with those that simply say "Asareel" with no roll. It could be a genetic thing, I haven't ever really researched that. I grew up with a Papa that disallowed English being spoken in our home (English was a language of business only). I didn't attend public schools except for maybe one or two years. I was homeschooled by my Mama. Sometimes I didn't understand why because all of my siblings went to public schools but there were other circumstances and my parents chose to keep me from enduring those situations. I learned most everything I did from reading books. Countless hours of reading. I still do it today. I probably read three times as much as I write on Wikipedia. I do thank you so much for being a part of this community and reaching out to me. It has made my day. Keep practicing those r's. I believe you will get it eventually. The human spirit can be quite indomitable. --ARoseWolf 17:58, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Best wishes for the upcoming winter, and thanks for the kind words about me on Martin's talk page. Stay warm and cozy, and see you when you emerge from hibernation! --Tryptofish (talk) 20:56, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

From Estariel

[edit]

Hi ARoseWolf,

Thank you for leaving an encouraging message on my page. I actually did run into an issue recently, having a disagreement with an editor. You can see our discussion here:

Talk:List of highest-grossing film directors# of films is not accurate

Basically I noticed that the information that they sourced is not accurate, and the source page has problems with how its tallying data and also contains some obviously wrong information. However the other user doesn't want to change anything and considers making these adjustments "original research". I don't know if I should just go ahead and make the edits myself but some of the data points on the page are just categorically wrong at this point.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance. Estariel (talk) 21:01, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, problem has been solved after some more back and forth. Cheers. Estariel (talk) 05:11, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

January songs
happy new year

colours to move forward! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:09, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

today, I point at two singers I whose performance I enjoyed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:58, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

today, less pointy: a composition from a remarkable 2022 concert, the sad record of four articles about people who recently died on the Main page at the same time, and singing for Epiphany --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:30, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today's featured article is Osbert Parsley, not by me but Amitchell125 where I commented, including the beginning of my songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:22, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm on vacation, - click on songs! I tell my own stories now, instead of relying on DYK. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:04, 14 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today's topic Elisabeth Waterhouse. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:18, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm happy about the pictured DYK you made with SusunW! Mine today, Elena Manistina, or: why Tchaikovsky's The Enchantress isn't on the Main page, leaves me rather unhappy, and that's my last woman on DYK, - life is too short. Under the recent deaths, I have Clytus Gottwald for whom I made a DYK in 2012. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:02, 27 January 2023 (UTC) back from vacation - Melitta Muszely died, RIP --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:59, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from BaltimoreHistorian (15:36, 8 January 2023)

[edit]

Hey! How do I create a page for someone who has the same name as an existing Wikipedia page? And do you know if I can change the name of a page in my Sandbox after I started it? Thank you! --BaltimoreHistorian (talk) 15:36, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Let's say that the existing page is about a tennis player named "Jane Doe", and you are creating a new page about a historian also named "Jane Doe". You can call your new page "Jane Doe (historian)". Putting a descriptor in parentheses in the pagename is the standard way of doing it. If you want to be even more elegant, you can use Template:About at the top of both pages. (You can see an example of all of this at Anne Hathaway and Anne Hathaway (wife of Shakespeare).)
Changing the name of the page in your Sandbox is done by "moving" it, and there's a step-by-step guide at Help:Move. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:54, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! BaltimoreHistorian (talk) 14:51, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tryptofish See above, thanks from @BaltimoreHistorian. Let me add my own to that. You are amazing, Tryp! Thank you. --ARoseWolf 16:39, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are some really damning issues with this case. One especially damning fact with child sex abuse cases is that there are no statutes of limitations. The thing that was really problematic about the statutes of limitations on this case was that it was run as a historical child sexual abuse case. The overwhelming and damning issue is the time between when the original incidents were alleged to have occurred and the amount of time it took for the cases to precede. There was a matter held in court in Ballarat. The issue with the case is clear as daylight that one of the alleged victims was already dead, that provided several issues with evidence and examination.

It also highlights a secondary issue about the case about how long in general it took to proceed. The issue as per always wasn't the strength of the case. A prosecutor rarely brings a matter to court unless there is a significant possibility that they will win that particular case. The real issue I raised above was the amount of time that had expired between when the alleged events occurred and the actual timing of the trial. Had some of the witnesses been alive, and the case been held at an earlier point where the evidence was fresh, and less time had expired in general, there may well have been an entirely different outcome. 120.22.208.169 (talk) 16:47, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for coming to my Talk page. Wikipedia policy does not allow us to add information to an article unless it is supported by reliable independent secondary sources. We are to take care in what we present to ensure it is actually supported. No original research is allowed. Wikipedia does not allow for "what if's". Adding derogatory terms in the article in Wikivoice without a supported citation to multiple reliable secondary sources is a clear violation of policy. Everything stated above is your conjecture of what occurred or may have occurred based on your following of this case and your own investigative determinations. Therefore the edit was reverted and should not be re-added under any circumstances until the criteria for inclusion is met. --ARoseWolf 16:57, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ARoseWolf The IP continues to reinstate their edits. An Edit War is active, as the user has violated 3RR. Just wanted to let you know. The Great Wikipedian (talk) 17:10, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, The Great Wikipedian, my discussion above is not in relation to the edits that are being edit warred over, specifically, but this edit in which the editor added "child molester" to the article. While it appears George Pell was initially convicted that conviction was reversed by a higher court meaning he was acquitted therefore the inclusion of the term in Wikivoice subjects Wikipedia to potential harm. Protection of the encyclopedia is paramount. --ARoseWolf 17:17, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Would love to have someone up-date if I am a conflict. Just trying to have accurate information on the site. Benson Curb (talk) 20:35, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Benson Curb: The proper way going forward is to suggest any changes on the articles talk page. You will see that tab at the top of the page on the article. You will need to provide reliable independent secondary sources for anything you want added to the article. It can't be anything you simply know due to any link you have with the subject. That is original research. --ARoseWolf 20:38, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Benson Curb, I have rolled back the edits for now because they were improperly sourced which left them unreferenced. We can't have unsourced content added to the article. Please go to the talk page (linked here) and follow the instructions found at WP:COI on how to approach asking for content to be added to the article. --ARoseWolf 20:46, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
there are two people that were making an up date. WE will gather information and references. The mike curb page is missing 50 years of information though.Someone will follow the guidelines to up-date. Benson Curb (talk) 21:40, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated IP vandal

[edit]

Just figured I'd tell you that the repeated vandal on various IPs we just encountered is an LTA, so no need to warn them. Just report on sight. You can ask ScottishFinnishRadish for more info since they seem to have encountered them first. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:33, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I picked up on that after looking at the article history, thanks, Blaze. :-) --ARoseWolf 20:40, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! I don't even know how the first article i noticed them on got on my watchlist...Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:44, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was just patrolling but when I noticed they kept changing IP's I figured it was a LTA so I looked at the article history and sure enough... I asked for page protection but may not have done it correctly. I don't usually make it that far. --ARoseWolf 20:50, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nope you've done it right (as evidenced by the page being protected now). I typically use RedWarn along with Twinkle since RedWarn allows me to request an article to be protected which Twinkle (oddly) does not seem to have. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:55, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, I have page request ability through Twinkle. I thought about using Red Warn but figured I'd learn Twinkle good first. --ARoseWolf 20:57, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Huh. Alright then, guess I Just don't use Twinkle enough for that. Tbh I don't even know how it's possible for someone to change IPs that quickly. Like, I know VPNs exist but they still take about a minute to actually connect you to the server. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:59, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Multiple devices connected at the same time maybe? --ARoseWolf 21:00, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe. I don't fully understand how IP addressing works so knowing how it works would probably help me understand how they change IPs that fast. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:02, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not familiar with this particular case, but one way that IP addresses can change rapidly is through an automatic process called "dynamic IP addresses", which is explained at IP address#IP address assignment. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:09, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IT's definitely not a dynamic IP. Multiple IPs from different ranges as well as switching between IPv4 and IPv6. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:10, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, then I agree that it's not that. Strange indeed. Maybe a mobile device being used while moving from place to place? --Tryptofish (talk) 21:16, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Laura Bergt. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Laura Bergt), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Hello, my name is Theo and I am currently working for the venture capital firm Atomico. I've set up this account to make some changes to the Atomico wikipedia page, and to our CEO's wikipedia page (Niklas Zennström), as much of the information is now outdated. I only wish to make edits to the factual information and have no interest in changing any of the language. I just wanted to declare this conflict of interest before making any edits and inform you of my intentions. If you could let me know that I am okay to proceed that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. --TheoFraser1 (talk) 10:29, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Almeida Fernando, Hello and sorry for the delay. Thank you for such a compliment about my name. It is so very nice to meet you. When I started on Wikipedia I began writing articles on a topic very close to me, you could say I was a SPA of sorts. I fell in love with this community and though I haven't written much new material since I have found more use out of helping others to write and doing work copyediting and patrolling for vandalism. If the right idea comes along I will get back into writing new articles. I would be so glad to assist you in any way that I may and I look forward to learning from you too. Remember that discussion is how consensus is found so don't forget to discuss any issues you may have with others in the community. --ARoseWolf 19:05, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, Asareel. I'll follow your guidance. I'm passionate about books so maybe one of these days, I'll try to find a notable book and write an article about it. Once again, great to have someone I can ask and get guidance from. Almeida Fernando (talk) 12:58, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My page for Devine Evans keeps getting rejected for publication. They say I need more references but the page is very similar to Adam Blackstone page. I would like your advice. --Jonfitzgerald82 (talk) 12:25, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jonfitzgerald82, Devine may very well be notable but the three sources you have for your draft are Tv Guide, a personal website and Billboard. That's not convincing. We need significant coverage in independent reliable sources. Significant coverage is often very subjective but I always tend to look at it in saying if they are a focus of the source then they are mostly likely being significantly covered. Be careful using primary, meaning closely linked to the subject of the article you writing about, sources. They can not be used in proving notability. With the AfC process the reviewer is only evaluating the draft based on the sources presented. You may find articles included in Wikipedia that are poorly or inadequately sourced but that should never be the rule and those articles will eventually be contested and possibly deleted. Keep working on it and find better sources to prove notability. --ARoseWolf 14:32, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

how to edit some pages about political figures

[edit]

Dear mentor

hi i am haithm. from Sana'a [sˤɑnʕaːʔ], i am researching on enriching wikipedia contents in arabic language, specially about public/political figures, in arab countries and in my country that never mentioned, which they are lots of them, they change the history of arab world, or my country, and most of people knowthem. but because of they lived in tens of decades ago. no articles, press, videos, or blogs, ever mentioned them by may be we can found old newspaper mentioned them, or a book published by them. a vintage personal portraits show him.

My question

how can i publish an article that is comply with wikipedia policies of people change a history, and mosly known by many. but no urls or articles or press talked about them?

is there any other validity proofs in order to publish a valid page or an article in wikipedia?

please accepet my appreciats in advance :-) Haithmgarallah (talk) 00:37, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for the delayed response, Haithmgarallah. Weather and responsibilities outside Wikipedia are the cause for the delay. Let me begin by welcoming you to Wikipedia and to state that I hope you will be able to find your niche here. I also wanted to state that I believe it is wonderful that you followed your passions here to Wikipedia and want to attempt to translate those to improving the encyclopedia. I will attempt to help you avoid many of the pitfalls that new editors experience on their journey here. Let's begin.
I am not an expert on the Arabic language but I am a student of language, both spoken and unspoken. That being said I do want t caution you that dealing with politics is a difficult path here on the encyclopedia, especially local or regional politics. It is especially important that you back up every claim or statement with reliable sources.
That brings me to the next subject, sourcing. Sources are not required to be online and you may use old newspapers but those newspapers must be available somewhere for review, whether in a library or excerpts from a book. There must be a means, even if it is not easily accessible or is behind a pay wall, of verification. In short, Wikipedia does not care what most people know. It does not matter what you or I know, unless it is stated, confirmed and verified in reliable sources.
I know it can be difficult to understand how or why the encyclopedia operates this way, especially when we know something is true. While there may be absolute truths out there remember that at one time in recorded human history very smart people believed the earth was flat. What we see as truth may not be so clearly evident to others and it may simply be perspective that alters how we view something. This is why Wikipedia requires independent reliable sources. We are not saying that what is written is absolute truth. We are saying that what is written is what reliable sources say is the truth.
Nothing will ever be able to take away the accomplishments of so many of these historical figures within the Arab world but without those reliable sources giving it significant coverage it can not be included on Wikipedia. The only valid proof allowed is the reliable source itself.
I very much appreciate you being here and a part of this community. Thank you for bringing your question to my talk page. I will be leaving a welcome message on yours with helpful tips and links to important information about editing. --ARoseWolf 15:07, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

March songs
my women's day story

I remember a 2016 DYK on IWD, Hana Blažíková, a Czech who sang German music in Japan. Girls and women sang how Bach arranged Pergolesi's Stabat Mater to a new text paraphrasing Psalm 51, last Sunday. - I loved improving Mary Bauermeister - on the Main page until yesterday. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:48, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Macfeegles (05:36, 9 March 2023)

[edit]

Hello, new to editing, so hope you can help. I have been trying to upload an image, originally created in xcel, then followed the instructions about how to prepare it, but when I finally went through the process of adding it to WP, it just comes back and says NO, but no hints of why. At a loss ... --Macfeegles (talk) 05:36, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Macfeegles and welcome to Wikipedia. I honestly can not directly answer your question so I have posted it to the Teahouse where I am a host and where very knowledgeable editors volunteer their time to answer questions. I feel this is the best place to ask. I have pinged you there. I will also leave a welcome message and some helpful tips for you on your talk page. Please do not hesitate to ask further questions should you have them. If I do not know the answer then I will try to get the answer for you. --ARoseWolf 13:24, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sonofman23 (10:51, 9 March 2023)

[edit]

Thank you. I’ve used Wikipedia often as a resource and would like to contribute my studies and interests in to pages.

What are the most effective learning tools and resources that would allow me to do so in the proper formatting with minimal effort. I want to ensure when i publish I take great care to respect the efforts of all those who’ve complied such a beautiful living wiki --Sonofman23 (talk) 10:51, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Topics for the curious minded

[edit]

As a preface, I am a very blunt thinker and talker. I’m open to debate and criticism of mine or others works because right and wrong doesn’t equate in subjects I dig in to and ask questions about. They are honest in their effort to explore a thought, question, topic or subject to its most objectively truthful end, regardless of popular opinion ot bias or the collective consciousness of the moment. That said I am not one to make a habit of using a platform in a manner for which it is unintended. Ghandi has rightly judged that “even in a minority of one, the truth is the truth.” What is wikipedias general stance on a research page surrounding topics that could be considered sensitive if presented in a neutral and informative format with links for back-up etc? Sonofman23 (talk) 10:59, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sonofman23, the world is full of philosophers and thinkers. In regards to Wikipedia, "truth" is believed to be in the eye of the beholder and therefore is not as important as accuracy to sources. We report what sources say in a neutral way, not meaning that every article is neutral in its content. We do not create a false sense of balance. If the coverage of a notable subject is overwhelmingly negative then how could the content within Wikipedia's article on that subject not be equally negative if reported accurately. We do not project our own thoughts into articles though you will see this often displayed on talk pages and in discussions so long as it doesn't violate a policy. We are expected to edit articles dispassionately even though we may be very passionate about the subjects we edit. --ARoseWolf 15:57, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Shawnee, Cheraw, new accts, & IPs

[edit]

Truong Gia Bao112 (talk · contribs) and Hidgggf (talk · contribs)

Now that the semi-protects have expired on a few of these pages it seems we will now be dealing with the former IPs in new incarnations as these two accounts. Almost definitely one was created to sock for the other (as one of the first edits of Hidgggf was a test edit made to the talk page of the other [12]).

They still don't use sources, just like when they edited as IPs, and other than malformed edit requests to article talk pages when they were semiprotected, have not made any talk page comments in discussion of their edits. Where do we go from here? Do we ask for another round of semi-protects, and expand to other articles such as Mohawk people and Banda Oriental, which they have now expanded their attention to? Do we ask for blocks? They seem well meaning enough, I think, they just refuse to abide by WP:RS, WP:CITE, WP:VERIFY and discuss at talk.

But four months of reverting nearly identical uncited additions is reaching the "enough is enough" territory. Thoughts? Heiro 14:14, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Heironymous Rowe, I agree though I don't know what the answer is other than staying vigilant. I noticed Truong made just enough edits to possibly get autoconfirmed so they could make edits to the article if it is protected. It might be worth opening a SPI but is there enough evidence to go on to prove anything? I don't know and I'm not inclined to assume anything without clear evidence or make those assumptions public even if I did. AGF and all that. --ARoseWolf 11:16, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That was pretty much what I thought as well, I was just hoping maybe you had some other ideas that weren't occuring to me, lol. At first I was thinking an SPI might help, but they only used the Hidgggf acct for a few days and have consistently used the other since. On behavioral, articles edited, and the cross acct talk page editing alone I think it passes duck. But I get the feeling the most that would happen with a filing is that it would be blocked as a sock and they'd get told to stick to the one acct. It might be better to leave it alone for now, and if they switch back to it in future it would be grounds for an SPI filing. If they do another round of uncited additions, we should probably do some explicit talk page explanations of why their edits aren't working. And then ask for block if they continue to not respond. Communication is required. Cheers, Heiro 12:08, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Heironymous Rowe, Agreed. Every attempt should be made to communicate. --ARoseWolf 13:37, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I ran into some copyright issues with a photo I uploaded to Wikimedia. LokenAkhanteros, so long as it does not contain personal information of either yourself or the copyright holder you may post what you wish to send them here and let myself or possibly one of my Talk page watchers to proofread it and offer advice. --ARoseWolf 15:37, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Native American article

[edit]

Hi ARoseWolf, I hope you are well. I am undertaking an article on White Antelope, a Cheyenne chief in the 1800s, perhaps best known for his death song at the Sand Creek massacre: "nothing lives long . . . only the earth and mountains". I know the Cheyenne are very different from the Cherokee, but I thought you might be able to catch some of the mistakes I will no doubt make. This is a very sad article to write, and I want to get the tone and coverage right. I was wondering if you would be interested in offering some feedback on the article once I finish the draft? Let me know, and no worries if not Eddie891 Talk Work 02:10, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've drafted it at User:Eddie891/White Antelope Eddie891 Talk Work 13:44, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Eddie891, I apologize for the delayed response. You mentioned Cherokee in the article but shouldn't be about the Cheyenne? "Relations between the Cherokee and white Americans living on the Great Plains declined during the 1860s, as many Cherokee refused to move to the reservation and instead attempted to remain on their traditional buffalo hunting lands. With the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, more soldiers were stained in Colorado. In 1864, John Chivington led the First Regiment of Colorado Volunteers began killing, according to historian Stan Hoig, any and all Cheyenne they came upon, ostensibly as a form of retaliation for reported theft of livestock. Several Cherokee settlements were completely destroyed." --ARoseWolf 14:21, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're completely right-- I've replaced those four. *facepalming* this is why I should write when more fully awake. I was reading about the Cherokee right before writing that section, I think, and my brain just stopped working. Apologies. Eddie891 Talk Work 14:27, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Eddie891, You don't have to apologize, it's completely understandable and why this being a community driven project is so beautiful. I do make a practice not to edit articles myself when other editors are actively editing unless there is a process by which each editor knows the other is currently editing. @GenQuest and I did this on the article Historic Cherokee settlements and its just great practice in etiquette so I will continue looking over the article and if I see minor grammatical or punctuation issues I may do those but for bigger edits I will just put them here and let you make the edits. --ARoseWolf 14:36, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Gertrud2214 (09:56, 26 April 2023)

[edit]

Hi Azareel, I want to make substantial edits and additions to a Wikipedia article about my father, Klaus Werner Wedell, who died recently. The current Wikipedia entry is very sketchy, contains multiple inaccuracies, and the headings are confused - eg 'career' contains info about his early life and is followed by a heading 'work'. I've prepared a section on Klaus's early life, citing publicly verifiable independent sources. What should I do now? - is the best thing to make the edits on Wikipedia directly, or send it to you to check that we've understood the Wikipedia citations policy correctly? Thanks! Gertrud2214 --Gertrud2214 (talk) 09:56, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I should add - I've prepared the section on Klaus's early life to start off with, to make sure that we're doing the citations right. I've also prepared a section for Wikipedia entitled 'career' - editing and adding to what is already there - and a section entitled 'key ideas' (he had a career as an educational psychologist spanning 50 years). If you have any advice on the appropriateness of these headings, please let me know. Thanks! Gertrud2214 (talk) 10:02, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America#You're in the news. Doug Weller talk 17:37, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Doug Weller, I thought about just responding to your email. I truly appreciate you keeping me informed as it could be long periods of time before I am able to get on here.
I do not want to turn this into a forum of grievances or a discussion about behaviors, the merit of arguments or even one where solutions are proposed. I will however leave you and anyone looking at this with my feelings concerning this and other debates on Indigenous topics.
Every discussion is like fighting a war, with both those on the project and those outside the project. I refuse to fight any further. When discussion began on Talk:Andrew Jackson concerning an AfC to change wording in the lead I stood with others. As differing opinions changed the flow and direction of the discussion and a consensus was becoming less and less of a sure thing all of these others left the discussion and I found myself almost standing alone for change. It was as if they realized they weren't going to get everything they wanted so they just stopped. I persevered because some change is better than no change. The revisit of FA/GA status of the article was the catalyst to operate with to see those changes come to pass. I refused to edit the article myself and allowed the process to work itself out through collaboration with others on the talk page and it was a great success. In the end, it isn't perfect but did any of those others care? Nope. All there is are complaints about its failures and dismissal of the countless hours spent in discussion to get some change brought about. News articles written that disparage and dismiss the progress made and only highlight what is perceived to still be missing.
Then there was the discussion on Talk:Trail of Tears regarding adding the term "genocide" (placed in parenthesis to emphasize the term) within the infobox. I was not objectionable to the addition of the term, in fact I support it 100%. I did, perhaps out of exhaustion from the Andrew Jackson discussion that had basically wound down by that point and from the continued discussion on that talk page, make the suggestion to include "cultural genocide" if "genocide" wasn't agreeable. An edit war ensued between multiple editors who battled with words through edit summary. I started a new section calling for civility and an end to the edit war. Instead of appreciation for the call to civility it instead gets implied I am trying to own the article and that my actions may inhibit editors from making edits to the article. As I explained my purpose it was ignored completely and then, in this section that had nothing to do with the "genocide" topic, my desire for some change to the article becomes a reason to attack my attempt as irrelevant, dismissive of the deaths of my ancestors and wholly unfounded. Mind you, there is a section in the article itself in which Indigenous academics discussed and put forward the term "cultural and physical genocide" in their writings. I was attempting to find compromise to affect some change in a more balanced direction, if the other did not find consensus, that was met by attacks and then a denial of intent by those involved. I admit that tone is sometimes lost in text but a pattern of text can offer a person the ability to detect tone.
This, among other reasons, is why I will not participate in any discussions related to Indigenous topics going forward for the foreseeable future. I sincerely wish nothing but the best to those who try and I have nothing but the upmost respect for everyone commenting on the project page about changes that are needed. There are heroes among them standing up against injustice that I admire and respect greatly. --ARoseWolf 18:58, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Whew, what an unpleasant experience. Sorry that happened to you. Have you seen the Adrienne Mayor video I added to the Wikiproject talk page? Doug Weller talk 20:30, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Doug Weller, I have not watched the video but I will. Again, it was unpleasant from my perspective and thus my need to back off from those topics at this time. I do not want to engage with the other editors or worsen the issues either of us experienced in that discussion. My point for being on Wikipedia is not to cause or be subject to additional stresses though some are expected. I admire the courage of many to speak up and share their perspectives and I would never want to dismiss them or their experiences nor do I want to even remotely suggest it as irrelevant. The experiences of others along with my own guide me on my daily journey and each experience is highly regarded and respected as relevant. I truly and genuinely appreciate every perspective. I also fiercely defend the relevance of my own in discussion but can allow for the fact that my emotional state within any given moment can affect my that perspective. I should be willing to listen more, a challenge my Papa gave me when I was much younger and I still sometimes fail at. --ARoseWolf 20:42, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It can be difficult. Anyway, I think you'll enjoy the video. She's great. Doug Weller talk 07:04, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

About accusations and aspersions on ANI

[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Hi, A RoseWolf. I was a little surprised to see your response to Bijou1995 on ANI. You advised people who think the user is a sock to open an SPI "rather than make accusations and cast aspersions". Opening an SPI is good advice, but you appear to not have noticed the mass of accusations, aspersions, assumptions of bad faith, and personal attacks coming from Bijou1995, mostly against a named user, just above your post. I've quoted some of them here, and also warned Bijou1995 on their page. You're of course a pretty experienced editor, so I wouldn't have expected you to ignore their bad behaviour and merely commiserate with them about the vendetta they think another editor has, and about their good heart. Are you sure you're on the side of the angels here? Bishonen | tålk 15:50, 27 May 2023 (UTC).[reply]

I looked at it, and it does look like a mistake on ARoseWolf's part. On the other hand, it looks like a mistake made with good intentions. I tried reading the OP superficially, treating it as tl;dr, and it superficially comes across like an inexperienced and somewhat inept user who has hurt feelings – although if I then read it the way I normally would read such a thing in a dispute, it raises numerous red flags for me. ARoseWolf, I think if you take a second look, that user looks like bad news. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:05, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow another insult, inept user, bad news? I really can't see what I have done wrong here. I admit I am not experienced at Wiki but I am trying to learn. I have been accused of lying about my illnesses, my faith and my intentions. I would like to prove my authenticity. I have had about five editors attack me but that's appears to be ok, whilst my humble investigation is threatened with being blocked, I feel like Im going to get blocked for replying and I need Wikipedia as I cannot work due to my disabilities, wiki helps me feel connected. So I apologise for offending anyone but I felt I was doing the right thing. Bijou1995 (talk) 10:05, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Are you familiar with the concept "non-apology apology", Bijou1995? That's what you have written above. (I really can't see what I have done wrong here... I apologise for offending anyone but I felt I was doing the right thing.) We have an article on it. Bishonen | tålk 11:07, 30 May 2023 (UTC).[reply]
No I am not familiar and what I wrote is what I feel, isn't is called justifying yourself. I notice nobody has referred to my disabilities being questioned or that I have practically been called a liar, I guess there's no policy on that Bijou1995 (talk) 13:00, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also I did everything correctly, I went on their talk page and then took it to the right dept. I listed my thoughts and previous editors thoughts which I made clear were not mine just to help others get an idea rather than having to trawl though wiki themselves. As for the mass of accusations on my part, I was merely asking if these things were possible from that editor and I made it clear why. I cannot understand why all this has turned on me when I thought I was doing the right thing. I feel bullied! Bijou1995 (talk) 13:19, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you trying to argue with me on ARoseWolf's page? I have given you a straightforward warning on your own page. If you have still more to say to me, please say it there. Bishonen | tålk 17:06, 30 May 2023 (UTC).[reply]
I think Bijou1995 did it here because they were hoping RoseWolf would defend them. I think they thought that doing it here would go better for them than at ANI or their own page. ARoseWolf, I have to agree with what Bishonen said below that your support emboldened them. While you had good intentions, supporting those who are harming the project is a net negative. You need to fully assess the situation before wading in. - CorbieVreccan 19:37, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Bishonen, Tryptofish, Doug Weller: I apologize for the delay in response. I have been away from home for the last five days. Two of my sisters that I haven't seen in better than five years came to visit us and I spent a few days with them in city, also gathering supplies we needed, before bringing them to the homestead. I really appreciate the comments you made and I want you to know that I respect you immensely.
I spent some time last night pondering each statement, decided to go to bed, and woke up this morning to think over it again after a cup of tea and meditation, and I truly hope you all will understand where my position is after I clarify. I do not condone any uncivil action taken by any editor, including myself. Many of the things pointed out by @Bishonen are, in fact, terrible aspersions. I picked one area, sockpuppet accusations, which does not disregard the other aspersions by omission. I pointed this at Bijou in regards to the "perhaps that person has multiple accounts" statement they made in hopes of bringing out the irony of them calling another editor a potential sockpuppet and then being upset that others may have questioned them along the same lines (now realizing they were blocked for sockpuppetry). While questioning in itself is not an aspersion, insinuating sockpuppetry can be extremely chilling. Look at how @bradv handled the situation (correct way) versus what @Iloveapphysics did by making sockpuppet accusations in edit summary (incorrect way). Bijou's accusations were no better. Just being directly accused can, under the right circumstances, lead to removal of editing privileges with simple circumstantial evidence to back it up. That is no ones fault in particular, definitely not the fault of our checkusers and admins who do a phenomenal job. However, unfounded and unevidenced sockpuppet accusations on talk pages and in discussions outside SPI are, in my opinion, one of the worst possible egregious acts of professional incivility that can be levied in specific regards to this collaborative project. It is not alone as the only uncivil action one can take that chills collaboration and disrupts the project, however, I do not see it dealt with in the same manner as other acts of incivility so I will not apologize for, nor do I see it as a mistake, calling it out when it occurs. If my focusing on one particular assertion that was thrown around back and forth between those two editors has led anyone to believe that I hold the position of being dismissive of the affects other uncivil acts may have had on fellow editors then I absolutely apologize as I have stated and continue to hold the position that any and all uncivil acts are uncalled for and should not be tolerated. In most cases a simple warning or a word of guidance is enough to bring good faith editors back in line. Though we, as good faith editors, do not always show restraint, especially when new, we should be expected, as experienced editors, to not allow ourselves to be provoked.
As a side, I was going to remove Bijou's comments above from the talk page but elected to leave it and will archive the entire conversation at a later date. I do appreciate every effort to try and understand my position and I readily admit that my comments are sometimes misunderstood and am willing to clarify them at any point. Do not hesitate to ask me about anything I state if you think it was in error. I am not above making mistakes and you are free to have a different opinion than I do. In fact I welcome open dialogue and appreciate differing points of view when presented respectfully. I usually take on most all advice and I will do the same with the amazing advice given here by three very respectable editors. --ARoseWolf 15:21, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I would say your post did "disregard the other aspersions by omission", since you discussed this edit by Bijou1995 while completely ignoring the situation of the target of their attacks, namely Iloveapphysics. I don't merely agree that, as you say, "Bijou's accusations were no better"; I think they were far worse. They were indeed the typical pattern of preemptive strikes by an UPE or unacknowledged sock of an article subject who is trying to make their article more positive: 'You're on a vendetta! You're probably a competitor! You just enjoy harming and defaming others!' I still don't understand how you, ARoseWolf, could let such stuff pass as long as you were going to comment on that very post at all. Did you see the eventual, quite sad, comment by Iloveapphysics on ANI, here, some time after you had posted? Note that as regards number of edits, Iloveapphysics is even more of a newbie than Bijou (they currently have 107 edits to Bijou's 397). And have you read Bijou's grateful reply to you, where they were emboldened to make further attacks ("it appears they deliberately want to hurt others")?
Also, I'm baffled by your suggestion that accusations were "thrown around back and forth between those two editors". At the time you posted, Iloveapphysics, an infrequent editor, hadn't yet said a word on ANI, nor anywhere else, other than the single edit summary that you find so heinous.
Tryptofish commented above that they believe you made a mistake with your ANI post, but "a mistake made with good intentions". Yes, I'm sure your intentions towards Bijou were good. But IMO, good intentions towards Iloveapphysics were woefully lacking; you don't seem to have considered them at all. If you think that's down to me "misunderstanding" you, so be it. We can always agree to disagree. Bishonen | tålk 16:24, 1 June 2023 (UTC).[reply]
ARoseWolf, I just commented above, but I'm also going to add here that bringing up the possibility of a disruptive editor socking is in no way the most egregious or incivil thing we do here. Experienced editors, and especially admins who've worked for years on sockpuppet cases, get a sense for these things, and for the type of users who are prone to it. We spot the editing patterns, behavior patterns, and other tells. And guess what? Most of the time we're right: Bijou is a sock and is now indeffed. FWIW, one of the most common things for sockdrawers to do when called out is immediately scream at us that those of us doing the investigation must all be socks, too. So I've been accused of socking innumerable times. I don't find it "chilling" at all. I laugh it off, as people usually do when they have nothing to hide. - CorbieVreccan 19:43, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ARoseWolf owes no apology to me. This incident is one that does not need too much examination or worrying over. As Corbie points out, Bijou turned out to be a sock (to me, they looked pretty obviously like one), and that was going to happen regardless of any encouragement. In fact, Bish and I share the honor of being named by Bijou as parties to a request for arbitration that ArbCom rapidly dismissed: [20]. ARoseWolf didn't find it as obvious as I did, which is no big deal, and Bijou isn't worth spending more angst on. Far more important, I hope you enjoy your time with your sisters up there in Alaska. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:26, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Tryp. I will note that upon further review of my comments I can admit the mistake of not focusing more on Bijou's uncivil actions. Had I taken a more thorough look at their comments I probably would have come to a different conclusion and commented differently. I would have still mentioned the sockpuppet accusations made by both, however, had I been here when Bish first brought up the problem they saw with my comments I may have been able to correct them. I was reacting to Bijou's expressed feelings, whether we believe them genuine or not. What is said on Wikipedia can have a damaging affect on people. When the subject or subjects of an article approach us I feel we can both be understanding and empathize with them while maintaining a position that the information belongs and should not be removed. If they persist in trying to remove the information or sock in an attempt to sway consensus or avoid a block then they absolutely should face sanctions. But we don't have to give up our humanity in the process nor neglect the principles of civility just because they are wrong for what they are doing. My intention with my comments was not to choose one editor over another, not to discount one editors position over another, but to simply point out that I can empathize with Bijou's position while wholly seeing them as wrong in their actions on the encyclopedia. If that emboldened them to continue their attacks on a fellow editor then that is unfortunate as it was not my intention to do so. Tryp may feel that I do not owe them an apology but I do offer one anyway. The same to Bish and Doug. I also hope, since Iloveapphysics was pinged here that they will accept my apology that they were viciously attacked and will not hold offense against me for not being as thorough as I should have.
When I saw your comments Corbie I expected it was you telling me how wrong I am in your eyes. As you say, one picks up on patterns. I do appreciate your thoughts and I will consider them. We will have to disagree on the severity of unevidenced sockpuppet accusations. Having to go through that myself (even having a SPI filed) I did find it both chilling and unnerving, especially since I had no clue it was happening as there is no requirement to notify editors when they are party to a SPI. Perhaps being a seasoned and experienced editor we can laugh it off, as it were. To a new editor just trying to find a way to contribute that can be extremely upsetting. But who really cares about my experiences and how they may have affected me, right? All that matters is your viewpoints. Look, all I've ever wanted to do is contribute, be a part of this community that I do care for and respect. But it's never going to be good enough for some. Again, I will take your comments under advisement but for the time being I think this net negative will step away from Wikipedia so that you won't have to spend your time pointing out your viewpoints about my inefficiencies, my flawed positions or have to comment on every mistake you think I have made in discussions. --ARoseWolf 13:49, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sending you love, ARoseWolf. It's not easy having a big heart. Folly Mox (talk) 16:43, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am a little mortified to see my editing pored over by such experienced Wikipeidans, but I am always open to learning and feedback! As a relatively inexperienced editor, I actually thought that it would be more confrontational to formally accuse someone of being a sockpuppet than to simply ask the question in an edit summary and that an accusation from an editor with a low edit count might not be taken seriously. That being said, I have definitely learned my lesson and will use the formal channels for sockpuppet issues from now on. I'm sorry for having caused this tempest in a teacup, and I look forward to running into all of you again under less dramatic circumstances. Iloveapphysics (talk) 20:59, 2 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, just dropping you a note to say that I enjoyed your rainbow story on Tryptofish’s talk page. While you may not have helped him, you can rest assured that you have helped others who read it. Viriditas (talk) 23:05, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your kind words, Viriditas. I can't say I'm not somewhat disappointed with his response though I try to be understanding and can empathize with his feelings. My hope is that one day he will appreciate what I said to him but perhaps the timing was more appropriate for someone else who needed to hear it. It was worth saying even if it only resonates with one person. I still treasure and appreciate what him and so many did for me during my darkest days. --ARoseWolf 13:18, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Open admins

[edit]

Hello, old acquaintance. I formerly went by another name here. Recently changed it because I realized probably just one user got the old time radio references in it.

First of all, I want to be clear that I am not asking you chime in elsewhere and I do not want you to do so. I don't expect you would do so, but I am spelling out that I am not canvassing.

I'm writing here because I need... a referral.

Things here devolved in the last day or so and I find myself blocked from article space indefinitely. I was rather broken up over it, but I know the friction between me and the site is for the best, and so I'm kind of relieved! Though I was having fun nerding it up for WiR and other areas, an extended Wikibreak should be a godsend when off-wiki life has never been richer, ongoing health problems aside.

Yes, I'm happy that I'll get hours per week back. Yet I suspect I'll want to draft or edit something in the future... I know myself that well. I put right what once went wrong. But I'm reluctant to request major edits or play in draft space due to likely scrutiny of my articles, drafts, and most especially the reactions my words have brought when I ask questions.

I know you are or were active at the Teahouse. Do you know any admins who would allow me to sometimes ask questions about how things operate on this site? I don't mean about the ongoing issue. I only mean it for the future.

I mean when and where to ask about what I can do, how to approach this and that best, what admins can do, etc.? Until yesterday morning, I would 'be bold', but I've since learned that questions/stating a case and asking whether I'm wrong can be interpreted as wikilawyering. I feel there is no safe place. So I'd like the option to ask a particular admin who doesn't mind my stupid questions on their talk page or getting pinged on mine.

I'm not wording this well. Aphasia humbles me.

Seems it needs to be a place that isn't the Teahouse, so I thought an admin. Who has much patience. Maybe an admin who has worked with kindergartners or parishioners. Who can explain things to me like I'm 5.

Let me know whether this makes any sense and whether you have ideas of whom I might connect with. Just don't reply if you're not interested.

Have a great weekend! Compulsive Researcher (talk) 19:44, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Diamond, if I may still refer to you by that. I wouldn't ever not be interested in talking things out if it a) helps you and b) serves the community by protecting the encyclopedia from potential damage, even if unintended. I honestly don't really look at whom is an admin or not anymore. I know a few because I see them working (truly admirably). I think of us all as part of the community and see us equally. That being said I can understand your position. If I'm being honest I expected you would drop by. I caught up on the conversation this morning. I've been tempted to take a semi-permanent break myself. I'm around less now anyway.
On the topic that brought you here: If I may make a bold recommendation, I would seek out and get a mentor, not an admin. Not myself, please, not that I wouldn't make every attempt to help you but, as I said, I'm not around as much as I used to be. I say a mentor rather than an admin because admins are extremely busy these days. Most have things they are juggling beyond their normal editing. They do a phenomenal job just handling those tasks and I'm sure there are some that would be willing to assist you but some might see it as too laborious. However, those that take on the role of mentorship know what they are signing up for. I've had a few experienced editors assigned to me and I still have a mentor myself. I really think you would benefit from that. You can see a list of mentors here. Find one very experienced and you may have found the assistance you need. Let me know if I can help you further. Good luck, Diamond and we aren't old acquaintances, we're friends and co-members of this community. --ARoseWolf 20:10, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I like this mentor idea! Thank you, friend. Have a great weekend! Compulsive Researcher (talk) 02:42, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Eye

[edit]
A twin.

Sometimes, I feel like making a reply to someone's comment on your talkpage, but then, I don't follow through as I feel overwhelmed with other things. I want you to keep remembering, though, that you are important to me, whether I write here or not. Ergo, here's a friend of mine -a twin from my talkpage today- who would also like to keep an eye on things around here. All the best to you... --Rosiestep (talk) 18:03, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Like Rosie, I often want to weigh in, but don't because you always seem to have the situation well in hand and you know me...conflict avoider. Nevertheless, just seeing your name always makes me smile. SusunW (talk) 17:09, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
SusunW, I don't ever want either of you to feel bad about responding or not responding on my talk page. I try my best to be open about who I am as a person and where I am in my Wiki-experience. I don't always receive very well what I initially view as attacks on principles linked to my character but later realize that they are, in fact, simply critiques that I should pay attention to once I have time to think about it and put it in the proper context. It is hard not to take things personal but, like I wish others to do for me, I should do for others. I realize the majority of critical comments directed at me come from a place of good faith correction or to cause me to pause and take notice of what others see as a potential issue I may have overlooked. I am appreciative of the feedback I get from everyone because it genuinely improves me as an editor and a person. In the end I may still disagree with portions of what is presented to me but I can see and respect other viewpoints within this complex and beautiful project. I have no enemy that is a member of this community, only respected colleagues and loved wiki-friends. --ARoseWolf 18:22, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm both proud and honored to be a member. I will never forget the impact so many from the project have had on me. That can be extended to friends and colleagues here. I know I have said that often but I really want everyone that has ever commented on my talk page or had an interaction with me, whether it was during a contentious discussion or a friendly chat, content or community building, to know that you all have and continue to have a positive impact on myself and my daughter who reads along with me a lot of times. Question from Shamiq Ahmad on Draft:International trade negotiation (10:41, 27 June 2023) (2)

[edit]

How to find good reference for international trade negotiation --Shamiq Ahmad (talk) 10:41, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Shamiq Ahmad, welcome to my talk page and to Wikipedia. By reference I assume you are wanting to know how to find reliable sources on "International trade". Reliable independent sources used to establish notability can be newspaper articles and other forms of media about the subject, published by those not connected to the subject in which said subject receives significant coverage. A source can be a reliable source and not be an independent source so you have to be careful about your sourcing. I recommend reading WP:RS, WP:IS and WP:CITE. It's best to use secondary sources but most independent sources are not secondary. Most sources are, in fact, primary sources so be careful about their use. If all of this is confusing I would suggest reading WP:DEV on article development. --ARoseWolf 14:19, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for your suggestion. Shamiq Ahmad (talk) 17:54, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edward C. O'Rear's maternal side

[edit]

His mother, Sibba Mynheir O'rear, was born to a father "of German stock" while her maternal side was "of English extration." As it says in her obituary (see the second image in this link, last 4 lines of text): https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/84949917/sibba-o'rear/photo 2603:6011:A400:8A82:68AB:CE9F:B627:CC31 (talk) 21:27, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Find-a-grave is not a reliable source. We need a reliable source to make such changes. Make sure to include a citation to a reliable source if you re-add or it may get reverted again. --ARoseWolf 21:35, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from A.Zijp (08:49, 28 June 2023)

[edit]

Hi Asareel, what a great function to have a mentor. Question: We published a Dutch page for our company a long time ago, and have an English one ready. What would be the best way to publish the English page? --A.Zijp (talk) 08:49, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Courtesy link: Draft:HVA International For any Talkpage Watchers interested in taking a look.
Hello A.Zijp, and welcome to my talk page and to Wikipedia. I have to get the COI stuff out of the way first and point you to WP:COI and let you know that, though you are not expressly forbidden from editing articles about the company you have a COI with it is strongly suggested you utilize the draft's talk page to request changes. If you are being compensated in any way by the company then, in accordance with WP:UPE, you should declare who is paying you or who your client is, in this case the employer, even if you are not being paid directly to edit Wikipedia..
Now, that's out of the way, let's discuss the draft. It has been declined because there aren't any reliable independent sources to prove notability of the subject. How old something is or even how influential it is or has been does not automatically give a subject notability according to Wikipedia. I post several links after nearly every question concerning notability and how it is achieved through citing relible independent secondary sources that give the subject significant coverage. Each source must be verifiable which does not mean that it has to be readily available at any moment but must be a published source of some type. Wikipedia is not a web host nor do we promote "companies" or have company pages. This is an online encyclopedia with articles on what Wikipedia deems notable in accordance with its policies and guidelines. If I may be frank, the encyclopedia does not care what anyone that represents your company knows about the company. It does not care what I may or may not know. It only matters what independent secondary reliable sources say about the company in order to confirm notability exists. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask. --ARoseWolf 15:15, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Kalemire Paul Journey (09:28, 10 July 2023)

[edit]

Hi , My name is Paul. How do I add my biodata and biography on Wikipedia? --Kalemire Paul Journey (talk) 09:28, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kalemire Paul Journey and welcome to my talk page. I see this is your first edit under this user name. Were you editing under another user account or by IP before getting this account or is this your very first ever edit? I'm asking so I might can get a history for you and be able to help you better. As of right now what I gather is you want to add your information to Wikipedia?
I must caution you, Wikipedia is not social media site with profiles though each user is granted some leeway to add information to what we call a "User page". These pages are not published articles but give you some insight into who you are talking to and what our interests are on the encyclopedia or past work we've done here. In order to have a published article on the encyclopedia you must provide reliable independent sources which show why the subject, in this case you, are notable. Secondary sources as opposed to primary sources are preferable and sometimes necessary. I can list you a host of guidelines and policies which present this better than I could ever hope to.
The one thing often overlooked in these cases is the fact that having an article on Wikipedia is not simply a bio and is not controlled by you, the subject. The community and yes, even random IP's, can edit any article and you can not control what is added or taken away from any article where you are the subject. This is not to dissuade you but only give you context of what may transpire after an article is accepted, whether you write it or not. You should carefully think on this before proceeding. If you decide to do so then please look at the usual policies and guidelines such as WP:N, WP:V, WP:RS and WP:IS. You will also need to read WP:COI as you would be the subject of the article and therefore have a conflict of interest. I would strongly suggest not writing about yourself as WP:AUTO points out. We want biographies, not autobiographies. --ARoseWolf 17:01, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from RaeOA90 on User:RaeOA90/sandbox (14:36, 14 July 2023)

[edit]

I would like to 1) turn this from a draft into a real article and 2) rename is to "rick spees" how do I do that? --RaeOA90 (talk) 14:36, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello RaeOA90 and welcome to my talk page.
Two issues that stand out to me about the sandbox article you have written are:
1. There are no verifiably cited references to independent reliable sources (WP:RS & WP:IS).
2. The draft reads more like a book preface or website profile page. Too much promotional puffery (WP:PUFF).
In short, find sources and add them to a "References" section of the article (WP:CITE) and I would remove words like "significant", "prominant" and "accomplished". The subject is not notable because of the promotional words placed in this article. In writing an article about him we must allow the sources to do the majority of the talking while we simply paraphrase what they say in a neutral encyclopedic tone. I do not recommend moving the article or changing its name until the criteria above is met to satisfaction. --ARoseWolf 18:49, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - is the updated version better? i've included more sources RaeOA90 (talk) 15:37, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
RaeOA90, the issue with it now is that it has been found to be a copyright infringement meaning a portion or portions of it too closely resemble what is found somewhere else online. Most every website has a copyright statement. We are not allowed to copy/paste from anywhere else. We also must paraphrase sources in a such a way as to not closely resemble what they wrote. Use your own words to describe a source. --ARoseWolf 16:47, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK that's really helpful, I will do that RaeOA90 (talk) 16:21, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ARoseWolf I am having trouble locating the draft; I think it might have been removed. Any idea how to get that back - Im changing most of the content but I would like to have my reference list easily accessible. RaeOA90 (talk) 16:39, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
RaeOA90, it was speedy deleted per the requirement as a copyright infringement. Due to legal issues that can arise Wikipedia must protect itself from these issues. Any article that is found to have copyright infringements must be scrubbed and cleaned of all infractions. In this case it was deemed to be almost completely an infringement and anything remaining would be unsalvageable. So the entire draft was deleted. I'm sorry. I know you feel you worked hard on it and I'm not doubting your intent, however, the draft could not remain available. It has not been salted so you can remake the draft. I must ask though, do you have a connection with the subject or the company he works for? --ARoseWolf 16:45, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have met him once before for lunch and said in passing I thought he should have a wikipedia page and offered to do it. I dont know him well.
That is fine re: draft, I understand. I am (clearly) new to this and trying to follow along with all the rules and regulations, but concerned because as I'm trying to make these updates and edits, there is no other way to save them than to publish - unless i'm missing something. RaeOA90 (talk) 17:06, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
RaeOA90, There may be considered a conflict of interest but I think meeting him once for lunch isn't that big of a deal if that is all there is. You are not receiving compensation and you only met once? No other meeting has ever been set up or followed through on and you have no ties to his place of employment? --ARoseWolf 17:40, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All of the above is correct. RaeOA90 (talk) 17:47, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a way to save versions without publishing / confirming it looks okay with you so that I can ensure i'm not violating anything without realizing? RaeOA90 (talk) 18:06, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
RaeOA90, no, even drafts are considered published, and you are responsible to make sure you are not including copyright material. This is why it is important to make sure what you are including is in your own words but can be verified through reliable sources. Don't copy and paste anything and never just rewrite what you find verbatim. We can evaluate whether what you write meets notability requirements through the article review process but repeated copyright violations can lead to sanctions so please be careful. I suggest you read H:YFA. --ARoseWolf 18:20, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK I am going to try again now having taken all of this into careful consideration RaeOA90 (talk) 21:00, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

my story today

Fireworks on the Rhine pictured on 1 July, but the real stars were sun and moon. I love today's story especially. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:43, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On today's Main page, you can find a cantata that Bach first performed 300 years ago, and an iconic saxophonist from East Germany. Also: a bit about the history of QAI on my talk. Thank you for being part of it! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:24, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. - Every time I pass the stone steps at the Abbey (pictured last year) I think of you, and last time I even took a picture, but it turned out too pale. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:59, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today Jahrhundertring, and I'm listening to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival, close to the scene pictured, - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:41, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Red 8th Anniversary

[edit]
Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap!

Question from JustMakingJokeArticles (22:42, 20 July 2023)

[edit]

Hi. I'm new, and I just wanted to make joke articles, can I do that? --JustMakingJokeArticles (talk) 22:42, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:57, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But if you are serious about contributing content, you might want to change your user name. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:05, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
JustMakingJokeArticles, Tryptofish has given you sound advice. You can not make "joke" articles but you can improve our article on jokes or Comedy. --ARoseWolf 14:51, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ARoseWolf, I thought I'd just leave a few follow-up observations with you. When I first saw this post, I figuratively rolled my eyes and suspected NOTHERE, but then I also thought about AGF and BITE. The user made one subsequent edit to main space, which I checked, and it was a constructive edit (and not reverted by anyone so far). I have a gut feeling that the choice of user name is going to get some administrator's attention, and the name needs to be changed, but the editor may turn out to be OK. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:05, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I thought Wikipedia had a policy for Humor JustMakingJokeArticles (talk) 20:24, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In that regard, I'd suggest looking at Wikipedia:Rules for Fools. It gives a good overview of what is OK, and what is not OK. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:27, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
While we're at it, I'll point you to Wikipedia:Changing username, because your current account name makes it sound like you are just here to create articles that are not allowed to be created, and you risk getting blocked over that username. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:31, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, But how do I change my name? JustMakingJokeArticles (talk) 22:52, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello...

Please guide me a bit, so that i may be always accurate and more useful for Wikipedia. i want to be top level editor of Wikipedia and want to promote Wikipedia knowledge more and more.

i know about sports, science, religion and geography of asia like things. --Aqibkhantaknik (talk) 12:56, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for the delayed response, Aqibkhantaknik. Being accurate is important, being accurate to sources is required. Every editor in good standing is a useful member of this community. I will never discourage any goal you have even if I may offer insight. My suggestion is to read policy, start with small edits, read policy, don't create articles until you fully understand the mechanics and requirements, also read policy. It also would not hurt to read the discussions between other editors. You can glean a lot of information but reading those discussions. Anyway, those are a few suggestions. I'm sure there are others who can offer additional thoughts and perhaps even better advice. --ARoseWolf 13:39, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

August songs
my story today

My story today - a first - isn't about an article by me, but one I reviewed for DYK, see here. I like all: topic, "hook", connected article (a GA on its way towards FA), image and the music "in the background". I just returned from a weekend with two weddings, so I also like the spirit ;) - Pics to come, I promise one cake, the other was too large! Good music, and better even in the concert ending the second day, - Goldberg Variations theme for an encore, after Dohnányi Serenade, - you would have loved the cellist! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:36, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Again not by me: today's story - with the triumph of music over military - is uplifting! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:15, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Now: picture of heart-shaped cake(s) uploaded! - Today's story is about a tenor, - why his roles are not linked on the Main page remains a mystery to me. Today is also the birthday of the Bayreuth Festival. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:25, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today is Debussy's birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:24, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This too shall pass. - Ten years ago on 28 August, I heard a symphony, with a heavy heart because of the pending decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX, and not worried about my future here but Andy's. - It passed, and I could write the DYK about calling to dance, not battle, and Andy could write the DYK mentioning about peace and reconciliation, - look. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:56, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TheAdorablesnowman (00:16, 19 August 2023)

[edit]

Hello I want to make a wikipedia page on an article but the page already exists as a redirect link. For instance I want to make an article on UNLV Rebels women's soccer but the page exists as a redirect link. Can I still make the page? Do I just delete the redirect link from the page and make the article? Or something else. Thank you --TheAdorablesnowman (talk) 00:16, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) User:TheAdorablesnowman, it appears ARoseWolf may be busy with off-wiki activities, so I've taken the liberty of responding to you while you wait.
It looks like your most recent draft article was approved, congratulations! However I do see you've had two drafts declined in the past week or so. While you're able to create an article at UNLV Rebels women's soccer by overwriting the redirect with article content, do you feel confident you understand Wikipedia's notability and sourcing requirements well enough to create a new article without a review process? If you create an unsuitable article it may be moved to draftspace. Also articles developed directly in mainspace are expected to be relatively complete and properly formatted from the get-go, although placing {{Under construction}} at the top of the page might help allay some of those concerns.
It might be better for you to write Draft:UNLV Rebels women's soccer until you have a bit more experience getting articles approved. The reviewer who accepts your article after it is submitted will understand how to move it on top of the redirect so you retain authorship attribution.
A middle of the road option might be to take your three best sources to the Teahouse and ask for a source review. It is a highly watched venue, so you'll be liable to get some quick feedback about whether or not an article is appropriate for the subject you're interested in at this time.
Hope this helps, and apologies to ARoseWolf if I've stepped on her toes. Folly Mox (talk) 00:50, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jamelavuma (21:28, 22 August 2023)

[edit]

Hi, i would like to know how publish my own article --Jamelavuma (talk) 21:28, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Hi User:Jamelavuma! I thought I might give a partial answer while ARoseWolf is temporarily away. The main guidance for publishing a new article is at Help:Your first article, but there is a newer and more streamlined draft at User:Houseblaster/YFA draft that is a quicker read.
You may also want to have a look at the short user essays WP:BACKWARD and WP:42. Basically, you'll need to find reliable sources that talk about your topic in detail, because otherwise the topic will not be eligible for inclusion in the encyclopaedia. A number of help venues for newer editors are available with quick response times, the best of which is probably the Wikipedia:Teahouse. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you get stuck. Question from Michaellix76 on Tony Murano (10:10, 24 August 2023)

[edit]

Hello! I wanted to create a page about Tony Murano. This is a famous photographer and filmmaker. I subscribe to his MNDmag magazine and also recently attended his workshop. I got information that someone tried to create such a page, but it was deleted. How can I create his page?

Thank you. Kind Regards, Michael --Michaellix76 (talk) 10:10, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Hi User:Michaellix76 (that rhymes)! I thought I might try to offer a partial answer while ARoseWolf is temporarily away. It sounds like the previous effort to create an article about Tony Murano did not establish that he is an eligible topic for inclusion in the encyclopaedia. We call this (somewhat confusingly) "notability", but lots of famous, popular topics don't meet the threshold.
There is good, somewhat prolix, guidance for creating an article at Help:Your first article, and a briefer, more streamlined draft at User:Houseblaster/YFA draft.
The basics are that you'll need to find reliable sources that are independent of Tony Murano (so if he operates MNDmag, that will not count towards establishing notability; similarly any information from the institution or entity that hosts his workshops is not considered "independent"). The sources will have to talk about Tony Murano at some length— at least a few paragraphs. As a visual artist, he may be eligible under what's called a "specific notability guideline": WP:NARTIST. This criterion may be easier to meet than the general biography guideline WP:ANYBIO.
Creating a new Wikipedia article and having it accepted for publication is not always an easy task, and takes a not inconsiderable time investment. I encourage you to give it a go, provided you're able to find adequate published sources, to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of modern visual arts. Help is always available. The Teahouse is particularly good, and someone there is likely to respond quickly if you reach out for assistance. Folly Mox (talk) 21:56, 24 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) User:Music Updater Uganda, ARoseWolf appears to be away for the moment, and has not edited since the beginning of August. I'm not familiar enough with the VisualEditor to offer you any help with the situation you describe. You may want to try asking at Help talk:VisualEditor or the Teahouse, with specifics about what all tools are missing from your interface, whether this happens on all pages or just some, etc. Sorry I'm not able to be of more help. I want to ask about rules and regulations of posts and how to best disclose connection to my employer. can you help? --Lindsaybayne1234 (talk) 21:17, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Hi User:Lindsaybayne1234! I thought I might offer some pointers to relevant Wikipedia guidance while ARoseWolf is temporarily away. The policies about disclosing a connection to your employer are Paid Editing policy and Conflict of Interest. Depending on the how you've come to Wikipedia and what your and your employer's goals are, you may find informative the brief user essay (not official policy) What to do when your boss tells you to edit Wikipedia, although this may not apply in your case.

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Special Barnstar
Whoa, it's been 6 months since I started editing here... time goes fast, I guess :) I've been reflecting on my experience as an editor these days and remembered this back when I was still named Shadow of the Starlit Sky ..... back then I recall you giving me advice to try to stay away from noticeboards as an uninvolved user. At the time I did not understand it but after a while later I realized that although I was acting in good faith at the time I was disruptive. I've just changed a lot as an editor since that piece of advice..... 6 months ago I was borderline disruptive and NOTHEREish in my actions, and now, after 1 GA, 3 DYKs and many, many reverts of vandalism I've fundamentally changed the way I edit, thanks to your advice. Seriously, you saved my life as an editor here. I cannot thank you enough :) #prodraxis connect 17:45, 5 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Prodraxis, this was a pleasant surprise this morning. I appreciate the barnstar a lot, your words even more. If anything it shows me that although I'm not a literary genius or a great orator, I do have a, admittedly small and sometimes seemingly insignificant, positive impact on a community and a project I have an immense love and care for. It's encouraging. However, I must say that all I did was give the right advice to someone willing and ready to listen. You applied that advice to change your approach. You put in the effort to adjust what you were doing and find a constructive path forward. So, you saved your life as an editor here. I just pointed you in a better direction. I could not be happier with the outcome and I am thankful to have you in this community. Congrats on the GA and all the little contributions along the way which usually go unnoticed. --ARoseWolf 14:17, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your impact may seem insignificant, but I can promise you that it's much more than that. --Tryptofish (talk) 17:41, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Tryptofish here - you may think your impact is insignificant but in fact it is much larger - your civillity and kindness while mentoring others has always impressed me. #prodraxis connect 02:27, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

my story today

Today's story is about a great pianist with an unusual career, taking off when he was 50. It's the wedding anniversary of Clara and Robert Schumann, but I was too late with our gift. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:42, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Did you meet Raymond Arritt, another of my "heroes" here? (I think I pointed at him when you listened to people's songs.) - He still helps me, five years after he died, per what he said in my darkest time on Wikipedia (placed in my edit-notice as a reminder), and by teh rulez. - Latest pics from a weekend in Berlin (one more day to come). - Thank you for what you told Corbie! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:10, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gerda Arendt, I remember Ray. What a beautiful Song. --ARoseWolf 13:53, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well said - editor of the week so well deserved, and beautifully illustrated! Don't miss my story today. The Schreiber ref (BR) has an interview with his voice. It's in German, but I trust that you'll understand the spirit. He said that he hoped it would be Tristan music on his mind when he died, and that it wasn't length of life making life good but quality of life. Spoken a year before the diagnosis. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:08, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh Gerda, such a lovely story. And I more than understood the spirit of the interview. Our voices are part of the music of Earth. Yet we are a individual Song. It's amazing to me how we blend and dance around each other. The things I see with my ears. The things I hear with my eyes. The things I touch, not with my hands, but with my heart. Life is about exploring the music all around us and in each other. If you see it, if you hear it, if you ae touched by it, in that moment you've already lived a more fulfilling life than ten thousand otherwise. How can one not be excited for a new sunrise? I love my Wikipedia adventure. --ARoseWolf 13:06, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you say that so well! - My story today is The Company of Heaven ("company" with a double meaning, but angelic company in the end). - No new pictures yet, it's a week with concert or opera every night! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:19, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Green GA Editathon October 2023 - Around the World in 31 Days

[edit]

Hello ARoseWolf:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Well deserved. So many corners of this project are brighter thanks to you. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:01, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, I feel overwhelmed by this. My Papa would be proud of you all, for once I am left speechless. Perhaps it is true that we are our own biggest critic because I don't feel deserving. There are far more impactful editors, I feel, who never get nominated for this much less are awarded. I will choose to trust the experience of those around me and I am very appreciative to Buster7, CT55555 and Hamid Hassani for the recognition. I have learned so much just being in contact with this project for the last three years. Thank you, Firefangledfeathers for you kind comment. You all are very thoughtful. Truly, my greatest blessing in life is the ability to hear the symphony that is us. --ARoseWolf 16:47, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are the 501st recipient and are just as worthy as ALL the rest put together. I have shared your idea of "our song and dance" with my freshman in college grandaughter. I hope you don't mind but it was so positive and profound in its simplicity. ―Buster7  17:23, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Buster7, on the contrary, I'm thrilled to know others are sharing it. I've always viewed us as strings, like a guitar. Our Song, our Life, is constantly playing on repeat. Each note has Color and even depth of Color. As we have experiences the Song grows and more colors are on display. When we encounter others, whether accepting or not, we are offering them a part of our Song. Like if you passed a flame from one to another. That is the impact we have on others. I take joy in knowing even in some small way, my Song will continue, impacted in my humankind, as a part of their own long after I am gone. That, to me, is the meaning of Life and the ultimate achievement. Be A Rainbow Today! 🌈 --ARoseWolf 17:58, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi dear ARoseWolf! Congrats for being chosen as the Editor of the Week! You deserved it. Good luck and go ahead! Regards, Hamid Hassani (talk) 19:26, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Asareel, I am thrilled that your song and colors are known by so many. Sorry to be slow passing on my congrats, but we were so busy we had no access to internet last week. My bro and sister and I and all our families flew in for my mom's 90th birthday in Oklahoma. It was so cool to have a whole table full of nonagenerians (literally no agers) among the roomful of people whose lives she has touched. Reminds us all that our songs have so much impact that we may or may not know of. I appreciate you and your positivity. It makes a huge difference in the world. SusunW (talk) 13:47, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Susun, so thrilled to hear from you. Thank you for your amazing words and lovely support. We all get busy with life, I'm busy bustling around the homestead these days trying to get everyone whipped in shape for winter. I know you enjoyed your time in Oklahoma. I relly need to get back down there again. I stay in contact with my aunt and a few people I met but the distance does strain things somewhat. If you want a good laugh here's a read for you. Our Colors are beautiful. I can never show enough appreciation to Ian, Rosie and yourself for allowing me to see yours. You are the real inspiration, Susun. --ARoseWolf 18:44, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
{{hugs}} I loved the laugh. SusunW (talk) 21:24, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So well deserved! Truly, I am surprised that you haven't received this honor earlier. Sending you heaps of hugs. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:06, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Rosie, I cant begin to express what you and WiR have meant to me, personally. I tear up and get emotional thinking where I was just about two years ago. Fearful of the unknown that was happening in my body. Unsure and alone because of Covid restrictions. WiR and really Wikipedia was my outlet. You don't realize how seemingly small things can have a huge impact on someone going through something as serious as cancer. Two years ago, while I was at my lowest in dealing with the cancer treatments and being isolated from my only support system, my family, a task came up in WiR that I happily took on and assisted with. Through that I was able to focus on something that was a challenge but that allowed me to do something for a project here that I love deeply. It gave me purpose and through that it renewed my strength at a time when I couldn't escape to the mountains, couldn't listen to the Song of nature around me. I listened to another Song, your Song. That helped me more than I can ever explain and why I am forever grateful. --ARoseWolf 18:44, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So grateful to read what you wrote here. You connect with me in a way that I can't explain. Sending you oxoxo. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:07, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was touched to read what you said here, about how that helped you deal with that low point. That's very inspiring, truly. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:52, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don't even get me started on how inspiring, motivating and important you have been for me, Tryp. Any award or recognition passed on to an individual editor here is never really about just that editor or their contributions. This is a community and sometimes we bicker and argue but I haven't met anyone here that doesn't inspire me in some good way. --ARoseWolf 19:00, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for practicing kindness. I'm glad to see your recognition. Folly Mox (talk) 19:02, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Taking this discussion here, in an effort to remove some heat from ANI

[edit]

In this post you wrote I don't see the point in them calling themselves a liar. Based upon my reading of everything written by Veganpurplefox in that section of ANI, I simply can not understand the basis of your comment. Nowhere does that editor call themselves a liar, or refer to autistic people as a group as liars. Perhaps I am wrong about that, and I simply missed the posts where the editor made such claims. What I did read - and I know I am repeating myself here - was a clear, unambiguous, false statement by Veganpurplefox that "neurotypicals" (i.e., people who are not autistic) are unremitting liars. That claim, I note, has not been stricken or removed, even though the author has subsequently commented in that section, so I conclude that they stand by it. You and I clearly disagree that the statement is a violation of our policies and guidelines against personal attacks. That's fine, as reasonable, good-faith editors often disagree about things. What I don't understand is how you can so seemingly easily brush aside that...claim...by interpreting it as a "point[less]" attack against themself.

As you already know, you are certainly under no obligation to respond to this note, and indeed you can revert this entire section if you wish. I have and will have no problem with that. If you do respond (I will watchlist this page for a short while) that would likely be helpful to me, as I recognize the distinct possibility - it would not be the first time, and unfortunately probably not the last - that I have completely misunderstood things written by other editors. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 16:15, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

JoJo Anthrax, ah, I see. I am the one that misunderstood. I took it that they were saying that, because they are autistic others believe they are lying especially with how adamant they are about their innocence. Clearly they are saying non-autistic or Neurotypicals are liars which would be a personal attack. Thanks for coming to me. I will clarify. --ARoseWolf 16:39, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for both the quick response here and the ANI clarification. I hope Veganpurplefox responds positively to your good advice. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 16:50, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes I focus a little too hard on what I perceive a person's intent is. That is why I clarified my point that, regardless of intent, the statement, as it is written, is a personal attack and should be struck. In that vein of knowing how I perceived their feelings I hope it clarifies my "pointless" comment. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to clarify. --ARoseWolf 16:53, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course it has been clarified, and thanks again for doing so. I recognize that while I immediately jumped upon Veganpurplefox's unfortunate statement, you have made numerous efforts to help them. I will remember that, and going forward try to follow your model more often, as in this case my response doesn't seem to have had any positive impact upon them. Thanks also for this unpointless (is that a word?) discussion. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 17:09, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Civil discussion is very important, really paramount and this one no less. No, it doesn't appear that the advice offered has been taken and that is regrettable but I hold out hope it will in the end. I've seen you around the encyclopedia, JoJo, and I love reading the thought that goes into your comments and responses. You do good work from what I've seen and I appreciate you a lot. --ARoseWolf 18:27, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You are too kind, and you have done much more than me to improve the encyclopedia. I look forward to working with you in the future. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 10:32, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb (15:52, 23 October 2023)

[edit]

Hello! I am wanting to edit/add on to a Wikipedia article about an author. It only talks about one of her books and I wanted to add info about another. I have read the Book Duology 4 times and am currently reading it for the fifth. I do not have any resources or websites to cite just my pure knowledge on the book. I know almost everything about it like when it was published, who it was by, the book names, the story, etc. I do not think that is trustworthy enough to people who read the article. Do you know what I should do? --A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb (talk) 15:52, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb, and welcome to my talk page. Can you tell me which author you are referencing? --ARoseWolf 17:40, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A.L. Tait. A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb (talk) 20:37, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb, I am trying to find the article on the author but haven't been able to by that name. I would say if you are just wanting to add the book to, say, a section on books she has authored then your personal knowledge is fine. The book should be published and therefore available to verify its existence. If you are attempting to add content to the article about or from the book then you may use your personal knowledge of the book but make sure you cite the book properly and use page numbers when doing so WP:CITE. --ARoseWolf 10:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, Thank you so Much! A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb (talk) 17:59, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently the Wiki Article was titled ¨Allison Tait¨ (She is referred to as A.L. Tait on all her books).
Here is a Link to it if you are still interested
Allison Tait
or
https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Allison_Tait A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb (talk) 14:41, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize, I've quite taken leave of my senses. A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb, Ian has a great point and I should have posted some important information on your talk page when you first communicated with me. I'll do that right after my reply to Ian's question. I am not an expert on which Australian websites are self-published blogs and which are reputable review sites that are considered reliable. I'm not sure we can create or accept an article based simply on a couple of reviews even if they are reliable. We would need a reliable source giving us in-depth coverage of the material. Why would these two books be more notable than say, any of her others? I would try applying a three source rule to the subject and see if it passes. What are the three most reliable sources that give the subject significant coverage and allow a ready to verify the content contained in a potential article? If that can be provided then I would say an article would be right for inclusion. If not then the most I can see is a redirect to Allison Tait. --ARoseWolf 11:49, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb and nice to meet you. I'm one of Asareel's pagestalkers and after noticing this conversation, which also includes Ipigott, I thought I'd add Oronsay as this editor may be able to provide clarification regarding "... which Australian websites are self-published blogs and which are reputable review sites that are considered reliable". Wishing you all the best, --Rosiestep (talk) 12:34, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb and thank you, @Rosiestep, for bringing me into this discussion - much of my editing is in Australian literature. As I understand it, you want to add another heading (similar to The Mapmaker Chronicles – which needs to be updated to 4 titles) for the "Ateban Cipher Novels" and describe both books. I am not familiar with either of the websites suggested by @Ipigott as references, but that doesn't necessarily invalidate them. Reviews of Australian children's books are hard to find. It would be good if one or both of the books had won a book prize but I drew a blank at AustLit, a database maintained by the University of Queensland, which only has the publisher's book blurbs in the descriptions of the work, but the lack of prize wins/nominations doesn't prevent you writing about them in the Allison Tait article. Hope I've been of some help. Oronsay (talk) 20:03, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In the light of the above, I think that rather than creating an article on the Ateban Cipher books, the best solution would be to update the Allison Tate article. This might satisfy A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb's interest for better coverage and she might like to propose or make additions. From what I have been able to find, A.L. Tait is an extremely popular children's writer in Australia and has just published another children's book.--Ipigott (talk) 20:22, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So sorry for not replying sooner! I had my PSAT only a few weeks ago and had other major tests. Thank you so much for the help @Ipigott @Oronsay @Rosiestep @ARoseWolf
It all helped so much! I am planning on starting my research this weekend since I still am having many tests at school and now have a good idea on how this all works! A-Neurodivergent-NerdyWeeb (talk) 17:05, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, can you help me understand what occurred here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1121012172

Basically gutted the article. --RubyU235 (talk) 18:03, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RubyU235 and welcome to my talk page. I'll try as best I can to explain. Bbb23 says in their edit summary "gut article for lack of sources and egregiously promotional language." They removed content from the article that did not have a cited reliable source (WP:CITE). They also removed content they felt was too promotional (WP:PUFFERY, WP:NPOV). We should generally avoid promotional language and state simple facts, nothing more, nothing less. What made it worse is all of this or most f this content was unsourced. As a rule, articles with promotional language can simply be rewritten to exclude the offending words or phrases, however, because there are no sources cited we can not verify the content and therefore can not rewrite. Every editor is responsible for the content they edit into the encyclopedia, including rewritten content. Editors are required to make sure the content they add meets all applicable policies. Bbb23 could not simply rewrite the content without verifiable sources. That does not mean the content can not be re-added in neutral rewritten form as long as it is cited to reliable independent sources. I hope this helps explain the edit in a way you understand. Let me know if you need my assistance further. --ARoseWolf 11:14, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from CampingEnthusiast (05:59, 2 November 2023)

[edit]

Hi, What do you think about my new article. --CampingEnthusiast (talk) 05:59, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

CampingEnthusiast, hello and welcome to my talk page. I'm going to leave some useful tips on your talk page that will hopefully help you out. Your sandbox article has a lot of good information but is lacking any sources. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Wikipedia doesn't want to know what you know about a subject although what you know will obviously steer you toward topics you wish to edit. Wikipedia is only concerned with what reliable independent sources say (see WP:RS) about a subject. Readers and other editors will be looking for content that is verifiable (see WP:V) and written in a neutral way (see WP:NPOV). Make sure to avoid promotional words and language (see WP:PUFF) and stick to the facts from the sources. We aren't here to sensationalize or promote subjects. The sources tell the story. Be careful and mindful of copyright restrictions. DO NOT copy and paste from sources but write it in your own words (see WP:CV). In short, article creation, when successful, is very difficult and very rewarding. The article you have written in your sandbox isn't quite ready yet and you have to do some additional work to bring it to a point where it can be reviewed but keep going and use the knowledge given to you here to improve what you've written so far. --ARoseWolf 10:21, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your Opinion is More Important than You Think Barnstar
HELLOOOO!!! I am here to thank you! You've been kind, and respectable during the ANI dissuscion with Cookie monster and the other user (cant remember how to spell their name, lol). And I would just give you a plain ol' special Barnstar, but then I went to tell Cookiemonster something the other day (forgot what I was gonna say), but then found this [talk page thing you wrote] asking him to apologise. And then in the ANI, you told me not to apologise, and you explained out nobody outranks anyone on here. So so, for your kindness, and being a great person even when not asked to be kind, you get this special barnstar. (sorry for the wall of text)Babysharkboss2 was here!! Babysharkboss2, very kind of you. Thank you. When a discussion is seeking community involvement to help find remedies to an issue and an opinion is given by a community member in good standing they should not be ridiculed as if their opinion doesn't matter because they are not an admin. That was completely inappropriate of them to do. But I suspect both those users know very little how Wikipedia actually works and that is the main problem. Hopefully they both gain some wisdom from this experience and moved forward productively. Again, thank you for your kind words. Exhibiting kindness towards others is a lifestyle choice connected to the general health of your journey.
