List of cycles

Thanks for putting up your excellent list of cycles! Do you mind if I edit the page to include a link to a category in each unchecked cycle (e.g. Category:Communication_design)? This will make checking through them much quicker. Dsp13 (talk) 14:29, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

This seemed fiddly to do, and since all I wanted was a quick way to go from this page to a given category page, I used the following bookmarklet, which searches for a particular wikipedia category with whatever text is highlighted:

Yes, sure. The whole source is inside .xpi file. .Xpi is an renamed .zip format - so you can open it with WinRar or 7Zip etc. The actual source code is an JavaScript. For future reference, we have a Criteria for Speedy Deletion which matches what you typed in - it is CSD I8 - this is used for pictures where an exact copy is available on Commons.

RE: Russian language (team-work)

Hi Andrew, now it is my turn to make a late reply, :) Thank you for your message, and thank you for linking to an example of your work. I'm impressed with it, spoken articles for the English Wikipedia have never been that professional or interesting! I like the sound effects and music you've added.

I know you suggested History of the Russian language as a possible article to record, but I think the quality is too poor for that at the moment. It seems to need a lot of work, which of course can be done by someone who knows enough Russian! Alternatively, we may be able to find a well-developed and suitable article in Category:Russian language. Let me know what you think, if you still want to go ahead. Fine :) Then I have the following

Plan:

  1. You will record this article with the highest possible bitrate (quality).
  2. Send the file(s) to me. Any format is suitable (.ogg, or .mp3, etc.)
  3. I will record the Russian words in the article, e.g. the alphabet, some names, etc.
  4. I will add some background music in the begin of every section. Then I will upload it to the commons.

Remarks:

  • Don't read the table in the section "Russian_language#Consonants". (1) It's not interesting. (2) It's impossible :)
  • Don't read the "See also" section and below.
  • Please, make small pauses in the recording, when you see / encounter the Cyrillic text. It will be more simple for me to add the Russian voice.
  • Also, please, make a pause when you see the wikified Russian word, e.g.: "the Volga River (pause)", " in Ryazan Region (pause)", etc. There is no Cyrillic in the text, but I can record Russian pronunciation. I think it will be interesting for the listener.
  • The subsection "Contents"... In English Spoken Wikipedia there is a tradition to record it. But it's not reasonable for such not so big article. IMHO.
  • If you can, then invite your local friends, your family for the recording (e.g. one voice for one section). Because I am sure that the more number of different voices lead to the more interesting article. /in my life it's a good reason to meet with my friends/

Clear and efficient, very good, :) I like your instructions.
You've been pretty positive so far, considering that you don't know if my voice/my accent/my microphone is any good or not. So, if it's okay with you, I will record only one or two sections first and send you the files. That way, you can check that you are happy and let me know if it's worth continuing, and you can give me tips on how I can improve (longer pauses, slower reading, faster reading, etc).
I will see if some friends are interested in recording some sections. No guarantee they'll agree though! Maedin\talk 13:47, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
I am agree with you. It's reasonable to start from the small part of the article, e.g. the introduction (before the "Contents").

Music and Spoken Wikipedia

I think that now the recording is really much better. Fine!
I recommend to add the name of the used music composition (with license) to the description of the audio file, in order to escape the blame of using of copyrighted music. See an example of such description after the word "incorporating" in the File:Ru-Russia part 7 Military and Religion.ogg. My format is:
Artist - Album / Composition (License tag)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Spoken Wikipedia template

Hi. You added {{Spoken Wikipedia|You forgot poland.ogg|2005-06-25}} to the United States presidential election debates, 2004 article. Unfortunately, it says that '[the] audio file was created from a revision of the "United States presidential election debates, 2004" article dated 2005-06-25', when in fact it was created from the You forgot Poland article, which is now a redirect. As I understand, this is very rare case, and it is first in my practice when the text of the spoken article was integrated into other article. I am not a skilled craftsman to change this complex template :( You can post your question to the talk page of {{Spoken Wikipedia}} template.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. I found your name at Category:User js (probably because you posted the corresponding userbox on your user page), in the level-unspecified list of JavaScript programmers.
