Article subtitles and other points

[edit]

Welcome back. Hopefully we can work better together.

This [1] guideline mentions the subtitles that should usually be used and the order they should be used in. This is to give consistency to medical related articles. Thus causes should be used instead of etiology.

This guideline discusses image formatting. Usually images are placed on the right. [2]

Also if you are interested in creating new pages that people have requested we have a list of articles yet to be created here [3] Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 14:02, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I agree that Wikipedia has a lot of pages that have uncorrected vandalism, or that are poorly written or poorly referenced. Much of your work is excellent and I hope that we can stay civil.--Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 14:50, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing

[edit]

BTW here is a great tool for formatting references [4]. All you need to do is enter the PMID number and it does the rest of the formatting for you.--Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 14:53, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Image sizing

[edit]

It is recommended that we usually leave image sizes at default. This is because registered users are able to set what size they wish default images to be displayed at (under My preferences -> Appearance ). Thus those who wish to see larger images can set WP to display defaults as bigger and those with a slow internet connection can have images display smaller.--Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 15:03, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Labels for maps

[edit]

Hey Mike we currently have about 150 of these maps all with labels. Before we decide to remove them all we need to discuss this at WT:MED. Cheers Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:37, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 19:58, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Paul Uhlenhuth.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Paul Uhlenhuth.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hello. You recently added a citation to a book from the "Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases" series published by Icon Group International to this article. Unfortunately, Icon Group International is not a reliable source - their books are computer-generated, with most of the text copied from Wikipedia (most entries have [WP] by them to indicate this, see e.g. [5]). I've only removed the reference, not the text it was referencing. I'm removing a lot of similar references as they are circular references; many other editors have also been duped by these sources. Despite giving an appearance of reliability, the name "Webster's" has been public domain since the late 19th century. Another publisher to be wary of as they reuse Wikipedia articles is Alphascript Publishing.

Interesting topic for an article, I'll expand it using reliable sources shortly. Fences&Windows 18:17, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Black tables in New York City

[edit]

Hi, Mike, I'm not sure what caused your tables to turn black; as the original creator of those tables, it certainly wasn't my intention! I was trying to shorten code in this over-long article, but I guess your browser or system won't properly render things like "bgcolor=afa|" . And if yours don't, then of course some other Wikipedia readers will see the same thing.

In the five-borough table, I was trying to match colors with those in the map, which are incompatible with those of the template that User:Mynameinc created from my original table, which in turn followed the convention I started (for other considerations) in New York City mayoral elections. Were the background colors too dark to show the borough names (in which case they could be lightened)? Or was everything black? While it was a pain (and added 2.5 - 3 MB kB I didn't want to add) to recreate the pre-template table with 2009 numbers, at least a white background won't positively confuse readers, so it's probably worth the effort. It's not easy, baby, when your whole world is black. I've added your Talk page to my Watchlist, so it's easier to keep any further discussion on this page, or move it to Talk:New York City, than to bounce it between your talk page and mine. —— Shakescene (talk) 20:31, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Everything looked black you couldn't read the numbers. I dont think the colors are necessary anyway, it looks cleaner...just my opinion. 7mike5000 (talk) 20:39, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I found a map which uses names rather than colors for the boroughs, and thus simplifies a number of things for the reader and editor, as well as allowing me to use the regular NYC boroughs template, which in turn reduces the article's size by about 3 kB. Just so I can see for myself when I'm unintentionally creating black boxes, what browser and system are you using? I usually use Google Chrome on my Windows Vista (Compaq) desktop computer, but I also have Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Firefox 3.6, and the last version of the obsolete Netscape Navigator 9. I got the update to Apple Safari 5, but Safari still freezes my system. —— Shakescene (talk) 09:39, 4 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copy And Paste Moves

[edit]

When you want to rename a page, do not copy-and-paste the content -- move the page instead (or if yuo cannot move the page because the target already exists, use WP:RM). This keeps the edit history with the article.

I have fixed Police brutality in the United States and changed it to a proper move. In the case of List of cases of police brutality in the United States, that's the standard naming convention of lists so there seems no reason to rename it. However, if you wish to have it renamed, you can ask for that to be done via WP:RM.

Let me know if you have any questions. -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:19, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure I have a question, I didn't realize I had to check in with you first. This: "List of cases of police brutality in the United States" isn't a title it's a book. This comment: that's the standard naming convention of lists so there seems no reason to rename it that would be according to who? restore text after fixing copy-n-paste move
You butchered deleted everything I wrote. The article was written like shit everything in Police Brutality was repeated verbatim. If I didn't redirect the page properly you can fix it without being pompous. I realize that it must take incredible effort on your part to write things like Baah and Aceval, they're vey laudable accomplishments. This is my personal favorite Hickenlooper. There are ways to speak the people without coming off like an imperious ass. So get off your high horse. And if you like leaving annoying messages for people, I'll pass next time. Thanks I appreciate it 7mike5000 (talk) 09:41, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Copy-and-paste moves are not allowed as they loose the attribution history which is required by our copyright licensing. When you copy-and-pasted the text, you made it seem like you had written all that text and you did not. Wikipedia takes its copyright responsibilities seriously.
With respect to Police brutality in the United States, it looks like I missed a step when fixing that. I forget to restore the edits I had to delete in order to move the page. I have restored those edits. I believe I pulled your last version, but if I didn't, they are all available in the edit history and you can select the right version.
With respect to List of cases of police brutality in the United States, I have gone back and consolidated the edit histories. Your changes should now be reflected. If not, like the other one, they are all available in the edit history and you can select the right version. As for the naming conventions, you can look around the site or check the manual of style. I don't really care what it is named, but it probably should have some community involvement on the name change which is why WP:RM would be appropriate. If you disagree, you are free to change, but use the move button. -- -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:43, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Copy-and-paste move was because I'm a dumb ass and don't know how to do it properly. As far as community involvement on the name change, it seemed that nobody really gave a crap about the subject because the same lame verbose information was repeated in two articles. If somebody wanted to read about police brutality in the United States they wouldn't type in List of police brutality cases in the United States more than likely it would be Police brutality United States or Police brutality United States. I personally think brevity in a title works best.
Last but not least I appreciate the response, I realize you weren't trying to be a prick, so I aplogize for my prior crass reply. 7mike5000 (talk) 18:20, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Depression (differential diagnoses)

[edit]

Well done. Long overdue and much needed. Sorry about blundering in with my massive rewrite the other day. I didn't even check the edit history to see it was a recent article, essentially by one editor. Instantly reverting me and then stalking my history and tagging some stubs I created was combative, but I agreed with most of the tags and have acted on them. Your thoughts on Hippocampal formation would be appreciated. Do you think it warrants a stand alone article? Anthony (talk) 06:49, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I tend to overreact so I apologize. I would like to change the name of List of cases of police brutality in the United States back to Police brutality cases (United States), I think it's more succinct and to the point, if you look on the talk page on that article there is only one comment about a different matter. So there doesn't seem to be too much interest at this point. It's an important topic and I think the name change would be beneficial. As far as naming conventions they're not set in stone.
Depression (differential diagnoses): I wrote that because...nobody else did. The mental health field is for the most part a self-serving industry and most of the people in it don't know their asses from their elbows, they for the most part pull diagnoses out of their asses and as a consequence people suffer.
Hippocampal formation: Do you think it warrants a stand alone article? I'm not an expert but considering that some of those who are include other structures adjacent to the hippocamus I would say yes.
7mike5000 (talk) 08:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I don't think it matters which name the police brutality article has, provided the other name redirects to it. Anthony (talk) 12:09, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've been thinking about the person who searches for "depression" on Wikipedia. I'm concerned about the percentage who suffer from it or have a loved one who does. I'd like them to find the best information as easily as possible. So I did this to the disambiguation page and this to Depression (mood), so it just describes the emotional/physical state thoroughly and briefly, and directs them to the 4 articles that might help. Do you you think this could be improved? Anthony (talk) 14:06, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It looks fine to me, although the article on Depression (mood) could probably be expanded a bit. It is a pure fact that most people diagnosed with psychiatric conditions have little or no medical work-up, not even the common sense procedure of taking a medical history is done. It's incredulous that an alleged college educated mental health expert can make a diagnosis of anything without the benefit of medical testing, not even a basic physical.
The fact that at least 15-20% of the human population have pituitary tumors, and 30% are seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii, which is known to alter human behavior is amazing. It's even more amazing that the numnutz retards "diagnosing" people don't know, don't test and probably don't care about the what the true problem may be as long as they get paid. 7mike5000 (talk) 15:33, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Couldn't agree more. How would you expand Depression (mood)? I like it being really skinny and redirecting people to the right page for them. By the way, I think I've read a peer-reviewed article recently, I can't remember where, maybe linked from Depression (differential diagnoses), explaining the necessity of doing a thorough work up on patients presenting with depression. Do you know what I'm talking about? Anthony (talk) 15:46, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I put it in Depression (differential diagnoses) and Anorexia nervosa it's not my say-so it's from experts like Richard Hall M.D., a thorough work up should be done for any disorder, nobody has a crystal ball, the excuse about monetary cost isn't a valid argument either especially for younger people. Misdiagnoses and missed diagnoses cost far more in lost productivity and lost lives.
It's incredibly asinine and irresponsible for someone to have someone sit in "therapy" talking about the puppy they wanted when they were 5 and how their mommy didn't love them when they actually have a brain tumor or and endocrine disorder.
As far as Depression (mood) you're probably right sometimes less is more, the philosophical nonsense like, according to Joe Blow depression may be environmentally adaptive is uninformative and useless. The Fight or Flight response is environmentally adaptive not feeling like a bummed out, suicidal, lethargic piece of crap.7mike5000 (talk) 16:16, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I endorse every word of the above. No, Hall wasn't what I was trying to remember. I can't access Hall actually. My university is only signed up from 1998 onwards with Archives of general psychiatry. Do you know of a recent review/guideline/textbook that stresses this? If you don't I'll do a search, if you do it'll save me the trouble. Anthony (talk) 16:51, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

merging and visibility

[edit]

Sorry about the merger proposal but I figured you might wanna see this:

I generally structure articles like pyramids, so rather than a section saying "for this info, see this subarticle", I'd place a summary, like we now have for assessment in the Depression (mood) article. Anyway....Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:31, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't mind, i think ;Depression (differential diagnoses) has excellent information in it, and not because I wrote it. Maybe a redirect from Depression (mood) to Depression (differential diagnoses) and add some of the general aspects of depression to the lead with links to major depressive disorder and dysthimia. If you merge Depression (differential diagnoses)]] to Depression (mood)]] it's basically tacking a full article onto a title. I think alot of people are diagnosed with "depression" and a host of other maladies due to poor, ignorant and negligent medical/psychiatric care, so if has positive information that people can use the more the better. 7mike5000 (talk) 11:18, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Listen I don't mean to be rude or anyhing but I think your nuts. Please dont leave crap like this on my page. Your one of the rocket scientists that wanted to leave "Why do you what a picture? A starving women (or man) looks the same whether that is due to a mental illness or lack of availablity of food. Starvation has a picture of a starved man. Edgepedia (talk) 13:25, 19 January 2010 (UTC) Talk:Anorexia nervosa, so I really don't think your judgement carries too much weight.
You've written two things: [6] what do you do sit around looking to annoy the shit out of people? although I am also very concerned about the way the references have been summerized How many references does it need nut job? HOW MANY? Harvard Medical School, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Richard Hall M.D.
I want you to stay around, and keep contributing. If you continue calling people names, somebody (not me, it doesn't bother me, but somebody) is going to drag you into various disciplinary actions and distract you from what matters. Anthony (talk) 06:50, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
When somebody leaves: However, this tag is very clear, DO NOT remove until dispute as been resolved. It makes me want use all of the : Seven dirty words

The original seven words are:

I think I've only used Shit. But your right some people are easily offended, even when they start the Shit. So I'm gonna try and use words like Tallywacker. Like I could of said: Hello Mr. Tallywacker, I do not appreciate you're poppycock, so kindly cease and desist, because nobody likes a silly poopy head:) 7mike5000 (talk) 20:01, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly. Without the Wikilinks. Anthony (talk) 06:39, 18 August 2010 (UTC) Or, even better, politely argue your case on its merits. People change their view all the time here. It's easier to change your view, though, if it doesn't imply accepting the proposition that you are a poopy head. Anthony (talk) 07:35, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page titles

[edit]

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Dutch Colonial architecture (New Amsterdam) a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Dutch Colonial architecture (New Netherland). This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Thanks appreciate it, but in this instance I created the page:
(cur | prev) 14:58, 10 August 2010 7mike5000 (talk | contribs) (1,789 bytes) (←Created page with 'Various stages of Dutch colonial architecture are evident at the Hendrick I. Lott House Dutch colonial architecture is...') and then thought New Netherlands would be a better in the title so I changed it:
(cur | prev) 18:00, 10 August 2010 7mike5000 (talk | contribs) (2,371 bytes) (←Redirected page to Dutch Colonial architecture (New Netherland)) (undo)
So in this instance there was no history. I thought putting #REDIRECT Dutch Colonial architecture (New Netherland) was the way to do it. Guess I was wrong.

Since you were the only user who had edited the article, it is not really a big deal, but it's best to get in the habit of moving pages instead of redirecting them whenever possible. Thanks. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 19:47, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And everything was resolved and they lived happily ever after.

Awesome, "IT'S NOT THAT HARD, AND STOP ACTING LIKE A WP:DICK ABOUT IT." I sincerely do appreciate the advice and since were pals now, I have a few helpful pointers, if you need help on writing articles, expanding them beyond a sentence or two, or the finer points of adding a reference I think you can find help here: WP:Mentor or here: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User, I found this to be helpful as well Wikipedia:Your first article. I feel so much better now that we are giving each other useful advice, maybe we can exchange recipes some day, or go get our nails done together or even do each others hair. I've been to South Dakota, I was at Pine Ridge and Rosebud, maybe we can hang out together someday and sing Kumbaya, or any song you like, I think that would be groovy. Have an excellent day TeamZissou, your a real swell pal. 7mike5000 (talk) 22:19, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
