Concerning the 1939 Papal Conclave, I am willing to cite the 1904 Apostolic Constitution of Pope St Pius X, Vacante Sede Apostolica, which required the cardinal electors to sign their ballots and shows the ballot cards then used. The 1945 Apostolic Constitution of Pius XII, Vacante Apostolicae Sedis shows the ballot card without the previously required signature. Do I understand this correctly, that I should have cited the 1904 document as well as the 1945 document, so it would document the change in election procedure? The article written before I posted anything said that Pius XII added an extra vote to the 2/3 majority so that a candidate could not cast the deciding vote for himself, but since he also abolished the prior requirement of electors signing their ballots, this meant that an elector still could cast the deciding vote for himself if he happened to vote for himself and the majority was exactly 2/3 plus one. I helped to contribute material to the article "Papal Conclaves" and no ever challenged what I wrote.
