Editing news 2020 #2 – Quick updates
Read this in another language • Subscription list
This edition of the Editing newsletter includes information the Wikipedia:Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. The central project page is on MediaWiki.org.
- Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing
@
. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months. - New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
- New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
- Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.

WikiProject Mysticism
Dear User: 3family6, thank you for saying you would join WikiProject Mysticism, especially with relation to articles on the Shakers, at Wikipedia: WikiProject Council. We have four Wikipedians who say they would join there, so I wonder whether you feel we can start the WikiProject? The number of Wikipedians at Wikipedia: WikiProject Council who have expressed an interest appears to have stagnated at four, but if we start the WikiProject, we may be able to attract new members. Vorbee (talk) 19:40, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- That seems a bit small for a WikiProject to me, but I'm game.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 15:42, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
I have started Wikipedia: WikiProject Mysticism, so you may like to join. After starting this WikiProject, some one moved it to the namespace, and it now looks like a proposal for a new WikiProject, but you may like to modify it. Thank you User: 3family6 for your support in getting this WikiProject established - it is appreciated. Vorbee (talk) 07:47, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
DYK for Battle of Asakai
On 23 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Battle of Asakai, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in Eve Online, the Battle of Asakai became one of the largest online battles after a single player made an accidental move that escalated the conflict to include more than 3,000 players? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Battle of Asakai. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Battle of Asakai), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Editing news 2020 #3
Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:
- The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
- More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
- Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
- The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
- Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
- On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
- In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

WikiProject Template
Dear User: 3family6, thank you for joining Wikipedia: WikiProject Mysticism. I wonder whether you would be happy for me to put the template saying "This article is of interest to WikiProject Mysticism" on the article on Mysticism and other articles relevant to mysticism? Vorbee (talk) 16:46, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, of course, that's fine, Vorbee--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 15:59, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
I have tried putting the template on the talk page of the article on mysticism, but it came out in red letters. Do you know how you get these templates on talk pages of articles, please? Vorbee (talk) 06:29, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. This is out of my skill area, I think the issue is that a template doesn't exist yet. Follow the guidance given by Redrose64 on the project talk page, and if you need help, take a look at Help:A quick guide to templates and Help:Template.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 14:31, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Reply tool
The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.
- More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
- Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
- Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[1]
The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).
The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.
New requirements for user signatures
- The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
- Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.
Next: New discussion tool
Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the New Discussion Tool project page on your watchlist.

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open
Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:03, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Works written by Natalie Sims
A tag has been placed on Category:Works written by Natalie Sims requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Interview Request
Hi,
I am an undergraduate student in an art history course focussing on art activism. I noticed that you are an active contributor to WP:Women in Red (WiR). I am interested in learning more about WiR users like yourself for use in a class project. I would sincerely appreciate if you would agree to answering a few short questions for me.
- How did you hear about WiR?
- I think that I heard about it first through The Signpost. Most likely this article: "Women in Red—using teamwork and partnerships to elevate online and offline collaborations". If I recall correctly, I was already following some of the discussions about Wikipedia's gender gap.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- What made you decide to get involved?
- Around the year 2013 I became very interested in feminism, supporting equal rights for women, and women's contributions to history. My baccalaureate honor's thesis completed in 2014 was about women's roles among the Waldensians. When I became aware of the issue of unequal representation of women on Wikipedia, I wanted to help rectify the problem.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- How many pages have you contributed to as a part of WiR?
- At least eight, there might be a few more that I can't find record of, if we include an album article (there might be more albums I've forgotten about).--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- How do you decide what pages to work on?
- A lot of it is based on my interests: History and music I contribute toward a lot, and all of my WiR contributions reflect that.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- What's the page you're most proud of and why?
- Ooh, that's a hard one to answer. I think either Mildred Barker, who in the 20th century was a major leader and public face of Shakerism (I work seasonally at a former Shaker site), or my recently created article on Ibaqa Beki, a Mongol princess and briefly a wife to Chinggis Khan. I learned about her recently while reading the book Women and the Making of the Mongol Empire by Anne Broadbridge (who was a professor of mine at UMass Amherst). Both of these articles are some personal favorites of mine, and both have inspired me to create more women biographies within those respective historical subjects (Shakers and Mongols).--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- How much time per month do you devote to WiR?
- That really depends. My editing is not so regular anymore. Now any given article might be the only article I contribute that month. So I can't really give an estimate.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- Do you view content creation as a form of art?
- Not really. Although writing for me probably feels similar to how art creation feels to an artist. So maybe?--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- Do you view your work as activism?
- Absolutely. And I think that my contributions, as well as WiR in general, illustrate that activism doesn't have to sacrifice scholarship, and in fact often boosts it (the push for more biographies results in new scholarship).--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- How do you research a topic that you wish to edit or create a new page on?
- After I'm inspired to create or edit an article, I search online for sources (and if I have access to offline sources as well, such as was the case for Mildred Barker and Ibaqa Beki, I will of course use those as well).--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 02:11, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Metrics/January 2021
You're adding entries to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Metrics/January 2021. Although it is not harmful to do so (except where users add new entries to the wrong month) it is pointless. The page is maintained by a bot based on the wikipedia article being correctly reflected in wikidata - as, sooner or later, all articles are. Any biog you write will turn up in the WiR metrics. Trust the system. --Tagishsimon (talk) 09:35, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, Tagishsimon. I knew this, I don't know why I felt compelled to add these manually. Question - will works by a woman artist automatically be added, or would these need to be manually added?--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 15:22, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
- They would need to be by hand. Limit of what's added by bot is items coded as human and female. And for the avoidance of doubt, it is the date of the very fist edit of the article that defines the month into whch it goes; a draft started in December and moved to mainspace only in January should be placed in December. I well understand the compulsion and, date issue aside, not harmful, so please do as you will :) --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:58, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

I well understand the compulsion and, date issue aside, not harmful, so please do as you will :) --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:58, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
Unconstructive revert by some other user
Hi! Thank you for welcoming me on Wikipedia, and giving me the directions to proceed. :) However, I have ran into an another problem. An user that is dedicated to NPOV probably thought my edit on Slavs was ill-intentioned and reverted it without explanation. I undoed his edit, but if it gets reverted again I won't do it again, as I don't want to get possibly sanctioned for edit warring. I understand that he thought this was just another vandalism, but I think that's far from truth. Just because something was removed doesn't necessarily mean it's of bad intention. I do not advocate for any separation of Slavs and "romance" (?) peoples or Germanic peoples (however a lot are just speakers of Germanic languages, similarly to romance languages), actually the opposite, but this article shouldn't include this. Or at least, name them accordingly, "romance and germanic languages speaking peoples". An incorrect paragraph just standing in the text and me knowing that it is not correct makes me want to redact it. But I got reverted without explanation. 178.149.86.8 (talk) 22:31, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Reply tool
The Reply tool is available at most other Wikipedias.
- The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
- It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.
Research notes:
- As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
- There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[2]
- The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[3] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
- A large A/B test will start soon.[4] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias (not including the English Wikipedia) will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. Editors at those Wikipeedias can still turn it on or off for their own accounts in Special:Preferences.
New discussion tool
The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[5] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.
Next: Notifications
During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.

DYK for Dax Reynosa
On 2 February 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Dax Reynosa, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Dax Reynosa began his hip-hop career as a battle rapper who would burn the rhyme books of defeated opponents, and later co-produced a documentary depicting battle rap in Los Angeles? You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Dax Reynosa), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

2nd Annual GA Cup - Round 4
GA Cup competitors and observers: Happy Fall! Get ready, we're about to move into the finals of the second-ever GA Cup! Monday saw the end of Round 3. Out of the 8 contestants in the semi-finals, 5 have moved to the finals. The semi-finals were competitive. Our semi-finalists reviewed a total of 61 articles, or a grand total of 1,151 points. If you were to lump the top winners from each of the three pools together, it'd be a close horse race; they were within 35 points of each other, which can only mean that the finals will be an exciting race. Tomandjerry211, our top scorer in Round 2, again earned the most points in the semi-finals, with 288 points and 16 articles reviewed. Johanna came in second overall, with 251 points and 13 articles reviewed; Sturmvogel 66 came in third overall, with 221 points and 16 articles. Rounding out our wildcard slots are Zwerg Nase and The Rambling Man. These contestants were very strategic in how they reviewed articles. Like every other round in the history of the GA Cup, success depended upon reviewing oldest-nominated articles. For example, Johanna reviewed 5 articles that were worth the highest possible points. Congrats to all our finalists, and good luck! Stay tuned to this space for more information about the 2nd GA Cup, including overall statistics and how this competition has affected Wikipedia. We regret to inform you that Dom497, one of our original judges and co-creator of the GA Cup, has stepped down as a judge. Dom, a longtime member of WP:WikiProject Good articles, is responsible for the look of the GA Cup and has been instrumental in its upkeep. We wish him the best as he starts his university education, and are certain that he'll make an impact there as he has in Wikipedia. The finals started on October 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and will end on Ocober 29 at 23:59:59 UTC with a winner being crowned. Information about the Final can be found here. Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6 and Jaguar, and MrWooHoo. To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant still competing, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

2015 GA Cup Wrap-Up
The second-ever GA Cup is now over! The competition officially ended Thursday. Congrats to everyone who participated, and especially to our finalists. The winner of the 2nd GA Cup is Zwerg Nase! He earned 408 points, over 100 points more than he earned in all previous rounds. He tied with our second-place winner, Sturmvogel 66 with 367 points, in number of articles reviewed (24), and they earned almost the same points for reviewing articles that were in the queue the longest (Zwerg with 322, Sturmvogel with 326). Basically, they tied in points, but what made the different for Zwerg was the advantage he had in reviewing longer articles. It seems that the rule change of earning more realistic points for longer articles made a difference. All of our contestants should be proud of the work they were able to accomplish through the GA Cup. Congrats to these worthy opponents! Our third and fourth place winners, Johanna and Tomandjerry211, also ran a close race, with 167 points and 147 points respectfully. We had one withdrawal; we found it interesting that competitors dropped out in Round 2 and 3 as well. One of the original judges and co-creator of this competition, User:Dom497 stepped down as judge during Round 3; as stated previously, we will miss his input and wish him the best. The judges were pleased with our results, even though fewer users competed this time compared to our inaugural competition. We recognize that this might be due to holding the competition during the summer months. We intend on looking more closely when we should conduct this contest, as well as other aspects of the GA Cup. We've set up a feedback page for everyone's input about how we should conduct the contest and what rule changes should be made. If you have any ideas about how we can improve things, please visit it and give us your input. Again, thanks to all and congratulations to our winners! Please stay tuned for the start of GA Cup #3. Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo. |

4th GA Cup - Wrap Up
Hello, GA Cup competitors! Saturday, April 1 concluded the 2016-2017 GA Cup. 64 reviews were completed by our finalists. Although the backlog increased by 42 over the reviewing period instead of declining, the increase suggests that the contest is encouraging editors to nominate articles for review. Congratulations to Shearonink, who is the winner of the Cup, finishing with 672 points! Once again, just as in last round, this is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! It was a close race for second place between Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, who achieved 164 points, and Sturmvogel_66, who earned 150. Though Sturmvogel_66 reviewed one more article than Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga managed to earn 14 points more due to reviewing older articles. Our two wildcard competitors, Kees08 and Chris troutman, came in fourth and fifth, respectively. There were some bumps in the competition this time: The sign-up deadline and the first round were both extended due to fewer competitors signing up then was planned for. And there were delays in tallying points and getting out the newsletter. The judges apologize for this latter difficulty. Lastly, mid-way through the competition we bid farewell to Zwerg Nase, who stepped down from their position as judge due to other commitments. Information about the Final can be found here. Thank you to all of our competitors, and congrats to our winners! Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo.
