ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:38, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Gina owllabs (15:44, 30 November 2023)

Hi, I am trying to edit the brand logo on the Owl Labs wiki page, as the current Wikipedia logo is outdated, but I need to perform 5 edits it seems to be eligible to make this change. The logo is available here - https://resources.owllabs.com/hubfs/logo.svg, would you be able to help me upload it? --Gina owllabs (talk) 15:44, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Gina owllabs! I took a look at the logo, and it seems to be in public domain as it only contains text, so there won't be any copyright problems.
Before you upload your file, if you have a conflict of interest (related to the subject), you should disclose that. See the info on WP:DISCLOSE for how to do that.
Next, upload your file (using this link, not UploadWizard) to Wikimedia Commons (a collection of free media files. Scroll down to the very bottom, select your file, and paste this in the summary (replacing the default text:
{{Information
|description={{en|1=Logo of {{w|Owl Labs}}}}
|source=https://resources.owllabs.com/hubfs/logo.svg
|author=Owl Labs
|permission=
|other versions=
}}
=={{int:license-header}}==
{{PD-textlogo}}
{{Trademarked}}
This will add file information to the description page. You might also want to add categories to the file.
Once you're done that, replace the "Logo_of_Owl_Labs.jpg" text on the Owl Labs article to your new file name, then let me know so I can mark the old file for deletion as it is copyrighted fair use and should be deleted.
If you want to make other changes, you should make a COI edit request, as editors with a COI should not edit directly.
Happy editing! ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 19:14, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Logo update: Owl Labs Wiki

Hi and thank you for your help! I am excited to be part of the Wikipedia community. I've updated the Owl Labs logo with the current and accurate version and I've also added a COI to my user page. I wasn't aware of the terms but I'm studying now! I will definitely use COI Edits in the future and again, really appreciate your guidance. Gina owllabs (talk) 20:33, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from KonstantinPriahin (23:54, 1 December 2023)

Hi, How can I install my photo on the site? --KonstantinPriahin (talk) 23:54, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @KonstantinPriahin! Could you please send me a link of the picture, as well as if the picture was previously published? (We need this for copyright information, as it's complicated.) Also, if you are connected to the subject, you should (or must if you are paid) by following steps at WP:DISCLOSE (or WP:COIPAYDISCLOSE if paid). ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 02:16, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from NOVEM171 (22:06, 3 December 2023)

Hello!!! I just added my name on a the page: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Colin_de_Land

I would like to add a "citation" with my name. The citation, reference is to a magazine Artforum: https://www.artforum.com/events/dennis-balk-3-205443/

How do I add that reference?

thanks! --NOVEM171 (talk) 22:06, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @NOVEM171,
First, you should disclose your conflict of interest (especially if you are being paid.) To do that, see WP:DISCLOSE (or WP:UPE if you are being paid). Next, you want to use reliable sources that are independent, so that information is verifiable. To add a citation:
  • Using the wikitext source editor (what you seem to be using)
    1. In the toolbar, click Cite
    2. Select a template that matches the source best
    3. Fill out information
  • Using VisualEditor
    1. Click VisualEditor_citoid_Cite_button in the toolbar
    2. Paste the URL or use citation template

Question from Pepo255 (01:14, 5 December 2023)

how to edit a article --Pepo255 (talk) 01:14, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Pepo255, and welcome to Wikipedia!
Before you start editing, you should know Wikipedia's core content policies.
From Help:Editing#Content style and policies:

An encyclopedic style with a formal tone is important: straightforward, just-the-facts, instead of essay-like, argumentative, or opinionated. The goal of a Wikipedia article is to create a comprehensive and neutrally written summary of existing mainstream knowledge about a topic. Wikipedia does not publish original research. An encyclopedia is, by its nature, a tertiary source that provides a survey of information already published in the wider world. Ideally, all information should be cited and verifiable by reliable sources. Sourcing requirements are significantly stricter in articles on living persons.

If you have a conflict of interest (related to the subject, like being family members, friends, clients, employers of the subject, or the subject itself), you need to disclose that. See How to disclose a COI (scroll down if you are also being paid).
Wikipedia has two different editors: the wikitext source editor, and VisualEditor. The source editor is more versatile and allows directly editing wikitext, while VisualEditor is a WYSIWYG tool that functions like a word processor. To learn how to edit using wikitext or VisualEditor, see Help:Introduction.
If you want to find articles to edit, your Homepage can suggest articles to edit based on tags placed by others. You can go to the Homepage by clicking your username in the top right corner.
Happy editing! ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 03:46, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mimi0923 (11:11, 5 December 2023)

Hello! I am new to Wiki. I am a student and had a question about Wiki. Is the information written on a subject verified or is it or can it be a matter of ones opinion or interpretation? If I find information proven to be unfactual, can a page be edited or deleted? Also, when editing, can another person come right behind you and edit your text? --Mimi0923 (talk) 11:11, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Mimi0923! I'll split this into three parts:
If you have any other questions, you can ask using your Special:Homepage (which also provides articles to fix, based on cleanup tags).

Question from Monurin (05:09, 6 December 2023)

Hello there, 2NumForIce! As a new user on Wikipedia, I wanted to ask you a question I've been wondering for a bit - what is considered as actual copyediting and what is not considered as actual copyediting? I just wanted to make sure all the edits I've done since my account was created are actually categorized correctly, thats all. Thanks! --Monurin (talk) 05:09, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Monurin,
"Copyediting" basically refers to improving readability of articles. You can check Wikipedia:Basic copyediting for a how-to guide and information about copyediting an article. When copyediting, material should be consistent with the Manual of Style, although you don't have to memorize the entire MoS, as you can simply search through the MoS using the search box on the right of every MoS page (use MOS: as a shortcut). If you are planning to be an active copyeditor, consider joining WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors, a WikiProject for copyeditors. Happy editing! ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 05:45, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your speedy reply, @2NumForIce! Another question I have is - what's considered as "promotional content" and "advertisement"? I ask this because a lot of the articles Wikipedia has suggested for me to edit has been tagged with such. Anyways sorry for bothering you with all these silly questions and thanks! (again) Monurin (talk) 06:43, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
@Monurin: I would consider "promotional content" to be content that is not in a neutral point of view and contains a lot of puffery (more biased words). A lot of promo articles cite no sources, or only cite non-reliable ones (mostly not independent), so I would consider that as well. See Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion for the Wikipedia policy about promotion. ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 15:55, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello [2a04...27eb], per the Biographies of living persons policy, All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be supported by an inline citation to a reliable, published source. Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—must be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion. You will need to add some reliable sources to the content you're adding (see Help:Referencing for beginners). I see that you're using mobile, so it's easier to use the mobile VisualEditor (enable it using the pencil icon on the top-right), then select the quote icon in the top toolbar. ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 17:05, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Henry Petros (09:21, 9 January 2024)

Hello boss May I ask question? I'm still struggling with attaching photos in the article Would you guide me on photo attachment in the article --Henry Petros (talk) 09:21, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Removed duplicate "Question from Henry Petros (09:22, 9 January 2024)". ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 02:31, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Henry Petros,
It seems you have a conflict of interest for this draft article. Directly editing Wikipedia on topics with a conflict of interest is strongly discouraged, and you will need to first disclose the COI. Articles need to be written from a neutral point of view (meaning that they don't take sides and instead state the major viewpoints), and the subject must also be notable enough.
Because copyright is complicated, we need to verify that your image is licensed under a free license. As your image is on Facebook, you can simply edit that post stating that your image is licensed under either the:
An example is: (linking to your chosen license)

This work is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0

Next, you can upload your image to Wikimedia Commons. You can use the Upload Wizard to upload the file. Log in with your Wikipedia account, select your image, then on the "Release rights" screen, you will need to select "This is someone else's work" so you can enter the correct information:
  1. Do you know what Creative Commons license this work was published under?
    • Yes, I have this information
      • select your license
  2. Where did you find this work?
    • your Facebook post URL
  3. Enter the name of the original author of these works.
    • {{own}} (This will mark it as "own work")
Then, fill out the rest of the file information, then upload the file. Finally, to add your image to the page, copy the code on the upload page to the article in the source editor (you can change the editor using the pencil icon).
If you need more help, don't be afraid to ask on your Special:Homepage, or see Help:Introduction for a guide to editing Wikipedia. ~~2NumForIce (speak|edits) 03:19, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
