Declined Speedy Deletion nom
I have declined your speedy deletion request on Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad. The article claims that they received regular airplay on Sirius and XM, which appears to me to be a credible claim of significance or importance. I do admit that it's likely that they aren't notable, but not clearly enough to meet the lower bar on A7. I'm going to fix up some of the formatting, but feel free to take it to AfD if you think it's not notable. I'm watching here if you have any further comments. CC-BY?
Is it safe to assume that a document is under CC BY if it states that "The material in this publication may be reproduced if [publisher and authors] is acknowledged as the source"? How much attribution do I need to give? Is it then safe for me to copy and paste? Thanks in advance. --Σ talkcontribs 02:43, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- To the extent of my knowledge it is safe. To be safe I would include in-text attribution as well as a reference. I would also provide attribution in the edit summary. Ryan Vesey Review me! 02:57, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- Not in my opinion because the statement is not clear enough. The statement does not confirm that commercial use or modifications are permitted, so one could interpret it as being one of several free or unfree CC licences. If a specific CC licence is not specified we should not assume anything not specifically stated. Try to contact the copyright holder and ask them to release the image under a free licence. ww2censor (talk) 16:01, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- Not only is it not safe to assume, it is certain that this wording is not a CC-by license. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:45, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- Certainly not CC. Possibly (and I mean very possibly) {{Attribution}}. –Drilnoth (T/C) 20:52, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- While this is not a CC license, I think using it should be fine. The copyright holder is clearly intending to allow the material to be used with a single condition (acknowledgement). I don't see a hidden "...if used non-commercially" any more than a hidden "...if you pay me a million bucks" in there. I think
{{Copyrighted free use provided that|([publisher and authors] is acknowledged)}}
would be fine. – Quadell (talk) 20:55, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

- So if the aforementioned footnote were placed on a text document, are the attribution templates usable if I copied or closely paraphrased it? --Σ talkcontribs 22:41, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- If the text is released under a free license, then there are no legal problems with reusing the text, so long as it's properly attributed. However, we usually don't reuse text word-for-word on Wikipedia (or even a close paraphrase), because it almost always has problems with bias or an unencyclopedic tone. – Quadell (talk) 23:10, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- Is an inline citation sufficient attribution, or do I need to use something like {{country study}}? --Σ talkcontribs 00:55, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with ww2censor; our license requires that modification be permitted, and this statement doesn't say anything about it. :/ I don't think we can regard that as compatible. Certainly, it's not CC-By, which specifically permits "remixing" the work. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:22, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

My mistake
About yesterday's account Tanushree Mukherjee (talk · contribs) that you reported, I made a mistake with that. After a suspicious account showed up today, Koel Mukherjee (talk · contribs), with nearly the exact same content, I did some more checking. The websites used as references are not even registered, so the articles are totally bogus. It looks like somebody is creating hoax articles about themselves. Anyways, I wanted to apologize for not taking more decisive action. I've blocked both accounts indefinitely, but I would not be at all surprised to see additional accounts show up over the next couple of days using that same last name. If you see any, please drop me a note and I will file an SPI report to see if we can block the underlying IP for longer than the autoblock. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:12, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
- Re your message: I try to cut SPA autobiographical accounts a break because usually they will go away after their article is deleted. However, occasionally I will get burned by somebody who really, really wants to get their made-up biography on Wikipedia (see Avinashkrishnadasa (talk · contribs), for instance). I remember 182.178.32.9 from your report. There was a different IP involved this time, 182.178.76.115, from the same ISP. It seems to be a rather large ISP, may be a /17, and who knows who else may be using it. Like I said, if you happen to run across another one in the next couple of days, leave me a note and I will follow-up on it. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 06:31, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Plant like things...
Hi Σ, I notice you've created a plant stub. In trying to salvage a new article I found on NewPages before someone who didnt recognize it was legitimate, I expanded this article a bit, added an taxobox, and surely mangled a lot of things (heck, even those fake plastic plants seem to die around me, so I know little about the topic at all). If you're bored and want to check out how badly I mangled it and fix whatever I screwed up, please feel free. Mostly, I'm worried about how I may have messed up the taxobox. I'll be getting back to the rest of it to expand it soon (but that darn box thingy I could definitely use some help with). Best, Rob ROBERTMFROMLI | TK/CN 03:46, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

I removed your tag of Mosaica Education. The subject of the article appears to be notable and the article was not written in a way that was exclusively promotional. - Is the USA exempt from the CSD criteria, then? It reads like an elementary school homework assignment which is 100% originally researched POV. The lofty glorification directed toward the various presidents and the tone that sounded like the USA was the only country that ever existed made me feel that it was enough to fall under G11 and WP:NOTPROMOTION. --Σ talkcontribs 23:42, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Sincerely confused, Samwb123T-C-E 17:06, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
- There is a special character that puts the text in "right-to-left" mode. You can find it on my userpage or User:Misza13/Categories -- it is the only character that doesn't show up, and you can copy it from there. --Σ talkcontribs 18:10, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
In regards to the "warning" you issued.
Something about verbally attacking another editor?
I think I said "This article reads like a TVTropes Article. Just so you folks know."
Either you're being sarcastic, or wikipedia editors have the thinnest skin ever. I say this because I made a statement of mild opinion, not an "attack" against another person. Perhaps it was deadpan, but I believe that it was justified, given that the discussion section was filled with comments to the tune of "let's fill the article up with obscure references to our favourite television show characters!".
I don't always contribute to a community, but when I do, it's because I'm certain that what I'm saying is at the very least non-hostile.
But don't let me get in the way of your moderating of Wikipedia. Yours is an incredibly important, irreplaceable job.
Sincerely, 99.236.253.4 (talk) 17:57, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
- This should suffice. Remember, if this is a shared IP address, and you didn't make that edit, create your own account to avoid other irrelevant notices. Thanks, --Σ talkcontribs 18:07, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
PointBot
Hi Σ!
Thanks for your interest in my bot. I put up a page with the most recent code here. Right now the bot just looks for pages without a definition in the first sentence (eg "Soup is a type of food."), so it's a work in progress. If you have any questions about the code I'd be happy to answer them! --PointGuy (talk) 02:28, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Coal ball
On 31 August 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Coal ball, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that coal balls are not made of coal? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Coal ball. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
