Draft fork

[edit]

Hi, I was just wondering if User:ΟΥΤΙΣ/sandbox/Battle of Mingolsheim is ready for reconciliation with Battle of Mingolsheim, or if the draft should be redirected or deleted? Thanks, Beland (talk) 20:13, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Beland. As time passed shows, this is not high on the list of my priorities. To seriously go through with that re-write I'd have to buy an external membership for my local university library and hope I can obtain the use of some relevant source works that way. I'd prefer to let it stand in my user space until I find some time for that. --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 20:55, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. In the meantime the live article has received improvements; if there's a reconciliation later it will just need to take into account the post-fork skew. -- Beland (talk) 21:48, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your question

[edit]

You were asking on IRC about museums.

Have you read about the GLAM project? That may have relevant information. DS (talk) 02:44, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your suggestion, Dragonfly, but see here, where it says: "Looking to Connect? Find a Wikipedian who can help you get started on a project: "USA", "Canada", "India""
It looks like I would have to start GLAM Germany myself to get the museum related help I imagined. ;) --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 03:07, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gonna call the museum's chief archivar tomorrow. He should have an idea of what else they have. I just hope we have a similar idea of "interesting" and "relevant". --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 03:14, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Technical question about the time

[edit]

This is really not important, but since you said you were a programmer, I wondered if you can explain something that is puzzling me. At the top of my own usertalk I have put a box that I pilfered from somebody else's page that is supposed to show what time-zone I'm in. But it is always an hour behind. Right now it is 14:34 here, and the box says my current time is 13:34. Under settings I have the time set to Berlin, so when I save this comment it will give the right time - it is just that one box that is getting it wrong. Where is it getting that from? Like I said, it is not important: if the box doesn't work I will just delete it again. But I like to know what is going on. Any ideas? --Doric Loon (talk) 12:36, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(OK, here on the talk page it stamps comments UTC - but when I look on the talk history it says that comment was at 14:36, as it should, in CET.) --Doric Loon (talk) 12:40, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Let's have a look...
What you have in your source code for the time display there is from MediaWiki's "Magic words" and "Extension:ParserFunctions".
I tinkered a bit with that and found it far too complicated. So I looked elsewhere and settled for a call to template {{time}}.
This is the source code of the call I'd recommend to you: {{time|CET|timeonly=yes|hide-tz=yes}}. For the AM/PM folks you can use this one: {{time|CET|timeonly=yes|hide-tz=yes|df=dmy12}}. An example, analogous to what you currently have, would look like this:
Where I live, in Germany, it is 10:07 [refresh] o'clock.
If it's the middle of the night or during the working day I may well not be online.
--ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 20:42, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ΟΥΤΙΣ: Of course! I'm an idiot! I assumed the problem was with my settings and didn't think about the code itself. Thanks so much. --Doric Loon (talk) 10:32, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your block on the German Wikipedia

[edit]

I have no idea what your block on the German Wikipedia is for, (something to do with judges?) anyway, your block on German Wikipedia has no bearing on your standing on the English Wikipedia, as it is a separate project. Hemiauchenia (talk) 19:07, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but I think it's not that easy. I'll try to send you a private message for discretion's sake. --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 00:06, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussions on IRC

[edit]

I feel the need to add a reminder that discussions on IRC are to help with "how to edit" questions and not for content issues. Discussions about content need to occur on-wiki so they leave a permanent record and can be seen by other editors. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 15:32, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think that this will slightly challenge my patience in my desire for quick answers and progress, but I understand and will do my best to follow that rule.
It would have been appropriate to find the right (public) forum for this, so I should have phrased my question that way: "What would be the right place to discuss / to ask this question?" --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 20:13, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Precautionary Goodbye

[edit]

I don't want to be overly dramatic, but mathematically my petition for protection from the German ArbCom against a false troll association has just been lost. It is possible that this account will be globally banned, shortly.
I really enjoyed my time contributing to Wikipedia as a hobby. I've learned a lot about working with sources and the workings of Wikipedia. I loved the friendly, respectful and open atmosphere towards newbies that I found here, in my time as an active editor.
Thanks again to the folks at the IRC help channel for all your patience and showing me the ropes. (This will likely not be published under the circumstances.)
I wished I could have continued, especially as I only got my Wikipedia Library card a few weeks ago and intended to use it a lot. --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 16:12, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pipe symbol in categories

[edit]

Here's an answer to the question you expressed at IRC #wikipedia-en-help. The pipe symbol is used to introduce a sort key different from the name of the article. See WP:Categorization#Sort keys and Help:Categories#Sorting category pages. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 22:02, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but: Do I have to know that by heart to be a good Wikipedian? ;)
I hope, the way I added them to Wellheim Formation (without pipes) is ok. But thanks for your explanation. --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 22:13, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I did not want to denigrate your advice, sorry. If you think this is important for me to know, I'll have a look at it. --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 22:15, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I may not have paid enough attention to what you were asking, so may have been giving advice not asked for.
Congrats on getting that draft accepted, and by DGG no less. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 22:32, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.
I must admit, I'm a little bit proud. :)
But that's no reason for being lazy: There's still science out there that I can write encyclopedias about. ;) --ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 22:37, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bundesverfassungsgericht, Verfahren 2 BvR 378/20, Oury Jalloh

[edit]

Hallo ΟΥΤΙΣ,

what is the list of german broadcasters you where referring to? i'd like to make the bot/script you where reffering to. Serprinss (talk) please ping on reply. 07:39, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This WDR article gives a good overview of the 2009 law and its effects. Every bit of content is assigned a limited online time ("Verweildauer"). For most stuff this is one week to one year.
A few selected bits of historical interest may be kept for longer in archive sections on the stations' websites.
On this page you can find an exhaustive list of all German state radio and television station websites. The logos of the stations link to the respective websites.
It's a long list: I counted 150 logos there.
Thanks for your work to fight this legally mandated link rot.
I'm also just trying to get a little more coding practice. If I can help you with any of the work, please say so. ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 14:59, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to ping you there, so: @Serprinss: ΟΥΤΙΣ (talk) 15:40, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Jans der Enikel

[edit]

On 19 March 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Jans der Enikel, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 13th-century Austrian chronicler Jans der Enikel characterized Richard the Lionheart as a "noble goose-roaster"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Jans der Enikel. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Jans der Enikel), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
