Medical Translation Newsletter
Wikiproject Medicine; Translation Taskforce
This is the first of a series of newsletters for Wikiproject Medicine's Translation Task Force. Our goal is to make all the medical knowledge on Wikipedia available to the world, in the language of your choice.
note: you will not receive future editions of this newsletter unless you *sign up*; you received this version because you identify as a member of WikiProject MedicineSpotlight - Simplified article translation
Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.
Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:
- WHO's list of Essential Medicines[1]
- Neglected tropical diseases[2]
- Key diseases for medical subspecialties like: oncology, emergency medicine (list), anatomy, internal medicine, surgery, etc.
We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.
What's happening?
- IEG grant
I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.
- Wikimania 2014
For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.
- Integration progress
There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.
- Swedish
Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May. - Dutch
Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie. - Polish
Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.
(This is somewhat alleviated by a commissioned Template bot - to be released). - List of articles for integration - Arabic
The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.
- Integration guides
Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.
Instructions on how to integrate an article may be found here [3]

Hello
Hello (I'm not sure whether I'm writing in the correct section) I'm replying based on your message you left me :) The reason why I reverted the edit to a previous one was because the article is about Buddhism in Iran, while some parts of the text (which I removed after turnig it back) is about Buddhism in Central Asian nations and regions, and therefore have nothing to do precisely with te article "Buddhism in (the country) Iran" Such information all belongs (in my opinion) in a article that should be named "Buddhism in Central Asia", or "Buddhism in Eastern Regions where Iranian-speakers live/lived"

Wikipedia ads
I have deployed Wikipedia ads template on my userpage, But the size of this ad is small, I wish to reconfigure this ad so that it fits to my profile(increasing height & width). How can this be accomplished? ( !dea4u 05:37, 6 November 2014 (UTC))
This would need a change to Module:Wikipedia ads.Looking at the module code gives me an urge to rewrite the whole thing, and especially to change the format of Module:Wikipedia ads/list. It could be possible to add a hack to make the images resizable until someone gets around to rewriting it, but personally I would prefer a rewrite. If you want to have bigger ads straight away, you can add a random Wikipedia ad directly to your userpage by using
. This displays a random file from File:Qxz-ad1.gif to File:Qxz-ad235.gif, with a width of 800px. Some files using this pattern of filename do not exist, however, so when those files are randomly selected, the code won't work. And it won't detect new ads. But for the most part, that code should do what you want. Initially i thought user might have been blocked from editing as i have issued him many warnings(as what happens in other tools like Huggle, Igloo etc.) but when i saw his talk page, no final warning was added, So i used Twinkle to issue him Final warning & reported the case at Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism#User-reported. Is there any option which could be added in STiki; where in case of such emergency(where User/IP is vandalizing wikipedia) we can issue him warnings in increasing order of their wrong actions like General Note >Warning>Caution>Final Warning>Request Block & so on such that Bots/Admin could block User/IP immediately( !dea4u 11:26, 13 November 2014 (UTC))
- @!dea4u: STiki has considerable logic to auto-increment warning levels in an intelligent manner (designed to play nice with Huggle's system and other tools), and some aspects of that failed here. First, STiki should have never created a second section labeled "November 2014". There was already one with that exact title, which STiki created just seconds earlier. STiki's policy and that of other tools is to append warnings to the existing section (assuming there is one that matches the month/year). Why this happened is a bit perplexing, but 'replag' (replication lag on the WMF servers) is a leading candidate since the two warnings were made only a couple of seconds apart (the failure to escalate the warn-level on the second warning also corroborates this). This might not be STiki's fault, but STiki poorly handled the situation after that.
- At every subsequent warning STiki asked "does this user talk page have a 'November 2014'" section on it?". My code was always returning the first such section, parsing it to find the highest level (the level 1), and saying "give this user a level 2 warning". Then that warning was getting appended the 2nd "November 2014" section. Rinse and repeat; the process continued through several warnings. To wrap-up, identically named sections were a problem spot, and I've coded up a fix that will be pushed in the next release. Thanks, West.andrew.g (talk) 01:03, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

Exposé vs Expose
Dear Jeff, Please enlighten me over this edit: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Raymond_Franz&oldid=635368836&diff=prev regarding exposé vs expose. I felt expose was more accurate word because of Etymology of exposé which is borrowed from French.( !dea4u 12:45, 25 November 2014 (UTC))
- In English, expose is a verb meaning to uncover, and exposé is a noun, and is the word in question. See wikt:exposé. (In French, exposé is used for both the verb and the noun.)--Jeffro77 (talk) 13:11, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

Dabbing
Hi, your dabbing of Suryanvanshi to Suryanvanshi is turning my watchlist green today. Is it really necessary? I know the idea of avoiding redirects but the sheer volume is creating a massive amount of work for me because I then have to check every article that you have adjusted. Wikipedia won't break if the change isn't made or if you limit yourself to, say, ten a day. - Sitush (talk) 15:34, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Buddy, Thanks for highlighting this to me. It is not necessary, but is needful. This Suryanvanshi was linked from 130+ articles. So i thought of directing these ambiguous links in single day, But i can't. Yes you were right about sheer volume it is creating, Please don't worry about this dabbing for Suryanvanshi to Suryanvanshi as only 41 are left, which i will complete by today. Please bear with me. Thanks for support & Patience.( !dea4u 04:58, 5 December 2014 (UTC))
Disambiguation link notification for December 5
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Munda people, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Munda. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Issue with Dab solver
Hi buddy, Is there some technical glitch currently going on with Dab solver? because when i am trying to fix Disambiguation at Articles with the most disambiguation links The new link which openes is showing "No redirect found" with details on page as "We've moved! We're sorry, but the user-supported tool you have attempted to reach did not leave a forwarding URL where we could automatically redirect you."( !dea4u 04:31, 13 December 2014 (UTC))
- Dabsolver is now at http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/view/Dab_solver. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:02, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Russ, thanks for sharing the update, But the problem is- Earlier when we use to click on FIX for any particular list in Articles With Multiple Dablinks or at Disambiguation pages with links it use to forward our page to URL where we could automatically correct dabs(Example: https://toolserver.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py?page=Lifeforce_%28film%29). But now it can't be done. Now i will have to manually enter article name in link provided by you at http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/view/Dab_solver & then only i can edit. Please suggest how i could use Dab Solver in easy way without hard labour as i was using earlier?( !dea4u 09:12, 15 December 2014 (UTC))
- Whoever is responsible for setting up those fix lists in the first place will need to update the code so that it calls Dabsolver at its new address. bd2412 T 17:36, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

About Tamsui Line (TRTS)
Dear !dea4u, You sent me a message saying I edited it for no reason? How? However, Xinyi Line Extension has opened last year, that's the reason why I deleted the future extension content.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Evadingness (talk • contribs)
- Hi Evadingness, Thankyou for sharing the information, But in the article Tamsui Line (Taipei Metro), you removed the section of Future Expansion giving the reason as Xinyi Line has been already opened., that "Future section" was regarding the Tamsui Line (Taipei Metro) connecting to Elephant Mountain. So my query here: Is Tamsui Line (Taipei Metro) been connected to Elephant Mountain in present timeline? Also how will a wikipedia user got to know about the authenticity of your shared information that Xinyi Line has been started. Please remember to add some source to confirm the infomration you know about.( !dea4u 11:23, 17 December 2014 (UTC))

Thank you for your work on the anti-vandal patrol. This was caused by two of us trying to restore Australia (2008 film) at the same time. I restored to a point JUST after another had restored to a separate point, which resulted in some confusion. Good catch on your part! Name Omitted (talk) 01:29, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Issue with Dab solver
Dear Jaga, I am very interested to work on Disambiguation & i was using your tool at Articles With Multiple Dablinks & Disambiguation pages with links. 1-2 weeks back when we use to click on FIX for any particular list for fixing disambiguation it use to forward page to new URL where we could automatically correct dabs(Example: https://toolserver.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py?page=Lifeforce_%28film%29). But suddenly last week i was not able to edit because when i am clicking on FIX , The new link which opens is showing "No redirect found" with details on page as "We've moved! We're sorry, but the user-supported tool you have attempted to reach did not leave a forwarding URL where we could automatically redirect you." Now i will have to manually enter article name at Dab solver & then only i can edit. Please suggest how i could use Dab Solver like the earlier way which was much easier & less time consuming. Awaiting your assistance.( !dea4u 05:07, 20 December 2014 (UTC))

Hi Nick Number, You are doing awesome job in Wikipedia:Disambiguation_pages_with_links#DAB_Challenge_leaderboard. I need your guidance in filling Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links. I wish to learn about tool you are using for this case, because earlier when i use to click on FIX for any particular list in Articles With Multiple Dablinks or at Disambiguation pages with links it use to forward our page to URL where we could automatically correct dabs(Example: https://toolserver.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py?page=Lifeforce_%28film%29). But now it can't be done. Now i have to manually enter article name in link at http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/view/Dab_solver & then only i can edit. Please suggest any smarter way to accomplish this tedious job. Thanks.( !dea4u 11:16, 22 December 2014 (UTC))
- I'd love to help you out with this, but I'm afraid I do things pretty much manually and I haven't had any part in putting together these tools. One thing that has saved me a lot of effort is the Clippings extension for Firefox. It lets me set up hotkeys for each potential disambiguation as I go, so I can easily fill in subsequent ones. To troubleshoot the automated tools, I'd recommend posting on the project Talk page. Nick Number (talk) 13:51, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
Can we move WP:DPL to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Disambiguation_pages_with_links since WP:DPL is Active Wiki Fixup Project under Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia. Suggestions required.( !dea4u 06:13, 23 December 2014 (UTC))
- This page is already part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation. Why does it need to be moved? Is the existing title hurting anything? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:14, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- I would prefer not to move it. I access the page often, and don't need to type the extra characters. Also, this is a general-purpose fix-up project for the entire community. Wikimedia even gives free t-shirts to the most active participants! bd2412 T 14:37, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- The appropriate move destination would be Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation/Disambiguation pages with links, if you wanted to formalize its hierarchical relationship with the project. I have no opinion on that move. -- JHunterJ (talk) 15:02, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- This would still be a necessary process even if the WikiProject didn't exist, so to me it seems fine where it is. Dekimasuよ! 20:04, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
Difference
What is the difference between Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation & Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links? because both are wikiprojects & aimed at same objective.( !dea4u 06:23, 23 December 2014 (UTC))
- "Disambiguation pages with links is a project that patrols the incoming links to disambiguation pages" (its first sentence). It's not a WikiProject, but part of WikiProject Disambiguation: Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation#Repair incoming links. -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:49, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello !dea4u, I just reverted your recent changes to Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/Userbox.
