FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COLLEGE, MAIDUGURI

Federal Government College, Maiduguri, is a government-owned  secondary (high) school in Nigeria with boarding facilities, situated in Bama road, Maiduguri,Borno State, Nigeria.

it was founded on January 31, 1973, when Nigeria was still trying to rebuild from the effect, division and Mistrust brought about by the Nigerian Civil War. Federal Government College, Maiduguri was among the second generation Unity schools established by General Yakubu Gowon the then Nigerian head of State (1966-1975).

Nigeria has a 6-3-3-4 system of education[1]. Federal Government College, Maiduguri takes the secondary pupils in the middle two phases. There are six year groups, or grades; each year group contains about 225 students divided into several arms, Junior Secondary School is divided into 5 arms while the Senior Secondary has seven arms cutting across 5 classes.  Recently, class sizes are an average of  45 per class. The total population for the 2022/2023 session was 969 students.

**The school has returned the best results nationwide in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) several times since her inception**(verify)and has also won National Awards [list Awards ]. F.G.C. Maiduguri is widely considered to be one of the top schools in Nigeria, even if for the singular fact that it did not shutdown during the insurgency crisis in Borno State but rather absorb the students of two other Unity schools (F.G.G.C. Mongono)to share her facilities.

Federal Government College, Maiduguri motto is "PRO UNITATE".

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

Federal Government College, Maiduguri was established in 1973. It was one of the twelve unity colleges established, as second generation unity schools in each of the then twelve states by General Yakubu Gowon, a former Nigerian military head of state. As a post war strategy, it was meant to enhance national integration and unity to heal the wounds emanating from the Nigerian civil war.

A co-educational institution, Federal Government College Maiduguri took off

on the 31st of January, 1973. lt was located along Kano Road on a temporary site of Government Technical College which later metamorphosed to the present Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri. lt had a population of 60 form one and a few Higher School Certificate students with two initial hostels named Niger and Benue Houses.

Mr. John Williams Ireland, a Briton, was the pioneer principal.

In 1974, the college moved to the present permanent site located along

Bama Road, Maiduguri. The increase in student population also came with

corresponding demand for more accommodation. Thus, Chad and Borno Houses

which completed the four house structure, until late 1990s, were introduced. By the turn of the millennium there was need to include additional accommodation this birthed two more houses Alau and Yobe, bringing the total number Houses to Six.

STRUCTURE

The school operates at two levels: junior and senior school. The lowest forms, JSS I to JSS III, make up the junior school. Students in those forms study for the Junior School Certificate Examination conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO) and taken at the end of their third year.

The Senior School Examination is the goal of the students in the upper forms.

Two examination bodies – West African Examinations Council (WAEC)and National Examinations Council (NECO) are each empowered to conduct separately the end-of-course examination and students are to enter for both examinations.

The senior and junior schools are distinct in their operations. Each stream of JSS 1 through SS 3 has about Twenty-Seven classrooms with varying numbers of students.

For management of both sections, the school is headed by the principal, who is assisted by :

There are other Academic and non- Academic staff who are also  responsible for the day to day running of the school.

The curriculum of the school covers Arts, pure Science, Social Science, Technical Science, Commercial -and vocational subjects as well as co-curricular activities. In line with the 6

Home economics/Food And Nutrition/Clothing And Textile.

The students are involved in games and sports. The annual inter-house sports competition is usually held during the second term of the academic session. The school has six houses that compete in the inter-house games, namely Chad House (Red), Borno House (Blue), Benue House (Yellow), Niger House (Green), Yobe House (Purple) and Alau House ( Pink).

The college has produced eminent Nigerians who have contributed immensely to the

growth and development of the country in different capacities. Major among whom are

Mr. Frank Nweke jr (a former chief of Staff to Enugu State governor , Federal Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Duties. Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, Special Duties and Youth Development Communication,a two time Minister of Information and National Orientation and then, Minister of Information and Communication(July 2005)

Hajiya inna Galadima (first Democratically elected female local government chairperson, Jere local government area, Borno State)

Dr. Success Prosper-Ohayagha ( two term commissioner for Health imo State)

Dr .Mrs. Vilita Bashir, (a two time commissioner in Borno State)

Barrister Umara Kumalia ( a

former member of the Federal House of Representatives )

Farida Yahya (president Mandela Washington fellowship 2024) and author of Redefining Beautiful

and a host of others.

As a member of Unity Schools Old Student Association (USOSA), the school a formal Alumni association Federal Government College Maiduguri Old Student Association (FEGOCOMOSA) with chapters spread across the globe partnering and doing great work to improve the  education,the environment, and well being of not just members but of humanity as a whole.
