The 1996 Indiana gubernatorial election was held on November 5, 1996. Incumbent governor Evan Bayh was term limited, and could not run for a third term. The Democratic nominee, rock musician John "Cougar" Mellencamp, narrowly defeated Indianapolis mayor Steve Goldsmith.
Mellencamp was considered an outsider candidate, as this was his first time competing in any election. He was criticized for being too inexperienced to lead the state, and the Goldsmith campaign attempted to portray him as "too liberal" for Indiana, a generally Republican state. Mellencamp's campaign, however, benefited from high name recognition, support from labor unions, and their portrayal of Goldsmith as being "out of touch" with the issues of the state's rural and small town population. His selection of South Bend mayor Joe Kernan as his running mate also helped to ease some tension about his lack of experience in government.
Mellencamp ultimately won the election by a 4.7% margin, performing best in the Chicagoland portion of the state, as well as in the south, including in his home county of Jackson. Goldsmith performed best in the Indianapolis suburbs, as well as in the Fort Wayne area. This was the state's closest gubernatorial election since 1960, and continued the Democratic Party's streak of gubernatorial election wins in Indiana.
