Introduction

[edit]

The Wii Wikipedia page was started on January 4, 2004. For about 2 whole years there was little trouble on the page. Then in the spring of 2006 a great debate started over the name of the article. People wondered if they should change the name of the article from Wii to Nintendo Wii. The debate over this raged for 1 month and in that month it became one of the largest Edit wars on Wikipedia. The majority of the debate takes place before Nintendo officially announces the name of there console.

The Edit War

[edit]

The debate over the name mostly took place in the talk pages of the Wikipedia page. It all started on April 28, 2006 with the simple question asked by the avid Nintendo fan Nick (User:NP Chilla) "Should it be called Nintendo Wii, or just Wii?." A simple question and many would think a easy one to answer. As it turns out it was not so easy to answer.

The first took place before the actual annoncement of the consoles name. So all arguments made in it where all just speculation based on rumor. debate is takeing place before the Wii was actually released or announced and is based on just rumors and speculation. It stretched from april 28th to april 30th. Many of the users who wrote on the talk pages thought that the article title should remain the Wii. All users except for one. That user was User:DivineShadow218 he was also a avid Nintendo fan and he rejected all notions that Nintendo would call there console the Wii and not the Nintendo Wii.

The other users provied links to many gaming sites all of which called the console the Wii.User:DivineShadow218 rejected these sites as unreliable. He then countered there arguments by saying that Nintendo has always had there name in the title of there consoles and that the Wii's website is called www.NintendoWii.com and not Wii.com. The other users countered this argument by saying just because the website is called that it does not mean that is the actual name of the console. The Users then all agree to wait and see what Nintendo officially calls there console.

The Second Debate started on May 3, 2006 only 3 days after the first debate ended. This debate is taking place after Nintendo made a press release stating in which the console was called Wii. So many people would assume that the debate would end with that but they would be wrong. The debate continued and User:DivineShadow218 was joined by another who shared his position called [[>x<ino]]. User:DivineShadow218 stood his ground and he countered the press release with the fact that it does not name the other consoles Nintendo has correctly. He also says that Nintendo's own website repeatedly lists the Wii as the Nintendo Wii. The other users seem to we tired of the debate by now and all simply agree that the Wii should be called the Wii since the press release states it. Due to User:DivineShadow218 arguments they all agree to wait and see what Nintendo calls the Console when they unveil it at E3 on May 6, 2006 which is the same day the agreement to wait and see is made.

The debate is then brought up again on May 13, 2006 by the user HOL with the question "So is the console called "Wii" and not "Nintendo Wii"? Is there proof, or is that speculation?". The debate which is after E3 is very short and all users agree that the Console is called the Wii because it was Trade marked under that name by Nintendo. Even User:DivineShadow218 agrees by saying "its actually Wii, from Nintendo."

Many would think that now with User:DivineShadow218 appeased that the debate would end. They would be wrong there was one last final event that signaled the end of the debate for good. This event was the filing of a request to officially move the article from Wii to Nintendo Wii by user [[User:Porsche997SBS]. His reason was simple it was that all other Nintendo consoles had Nintendo in there name. The results of the survey were unanimous all users agreed that the Article should remain named Wii. The main reason give was because that's the name Nintendo gave it. With this survey the debate ends completely.

Conclusions

[edit]

The name will remain the Wii. That was the conclusion of one of the largest edit wars on Wikipedia. The fact that the debate took place in the first place seems idiotic to many. The reasons are many but the driving force behind the debate and edit war can all come down to one thing. That thing is the love that fans have for Nintendo and its products. If this was any other company there would have not been any debate, but because people felt so strongly about it they caused one of the largest edit wars on Wikipedia.--Youngpenn (talk) 15:31, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
