Europa League 2011/12 qualification

[edit]

Note ENG

  • England (ENG): Manchester City and Stoke City will contest the 2011 FA Cup final. If Manchester City qualify for the Champions League by finishing in 4th place or higher in the Premier League, then Stoke are guaranteed a place in the Europa League. In this case, if Stoke win, they will start in the Play-Off round, if they lose, they will start in the lowest Europa league spot in the 3rd Qualifying round. This last case would promote Birmingham City into the Play-Off round as Manchester City would vacate the CW spot, and under UEFA rules[1], the cup runners-up cannot qualify in the national associations highest Europa League spot. If Manchester City finish 5th, which qualifies them for the Europa League Play-Off round, the above still applies, except that it is the 5th place spot that is vacated instead of the CW place (As per redistribution rules).

Note SCO

  • Scotland (SCO): Motherwell play Celtic in the 2011 Scottish Cup final. If Motherwell win the Scottish Cup, they will enter at the 3rd Qualifying round. However if they lose, they get the lowest available place in the Europa League, which is in the 2nd Qualifying round currently reserved for the 3rd place team in the Scottish Premier League. Celtic are guaranteed finishing either 1st or 2nd in the League, therefore if Celtic win the cup, the CW spot will not be needed and will be given to the 3rd placed team in the League instead.
