StormFlower is the debut fragrance by British singer-songwriter Cheryl, released on 21 August 2014. The fragrance contains juicy notes of mandarin and nectarine mixed with feminine floral tones of peach blossom and freesia, a hint of vanilla and white musk.

Background and development

[edit]

In May 2014, Cheryl announced her plans to release her first fragrance, revealing on her official Instagram: "I AM SO EXCITED!!! I couldn't wait to tell you."[1][2] She further announced the scent's name as StormFlower, after unveiling a sneak peek at the fragrance's promotional ad.[1][2]

"It's like every little girl's dream. When I was a kid, I used to create perfumes with my sister so I've been obsessed even from a young age."

Cheryl, on her desire to creating a fragrance since being a child.[3]

During the scent's launch party, Cheryl revealed that the inspiration behind the scent came from "that fresh feeling when there's been a storm. I love gold, it just feels very expensive and premium."[3] Cheryl also described the scent as "very me" and that she "didn't just want to put my name to a fragrance", and that she worked on everything "from scratch".[4]

Packaging and scent

[edit]

StormFlower's promotional campaign was directed and shot by photographer Rankin, with Cheryl remarking, "I love it, I'm so excited. I shot the commercial with Rankin who I love. I knew he would capture the things I wanted and help to make it more than a normal perfume ad."[3]

Cheryl launched StormFlower on 23 July 2014 at an exclusive launch party in central London.[3] In a television advert, Cheryl shows off "her best ballet moves to an intense tune", while flowers float around in the background.[5]

[edit]

StormFlower broke records, following its early release to The Perfume Shop, outselling rival scents from Rihanna, Britney Spears and One Direction.[6] Cathy Newman, Head of Sales at The Perfume Shop, stated: "StormFlower by Cheryl has been one of our most successful perfume launches and a favourite with our customers. [...] Cheryl's passion to create a truly feminine scent that reflects her own personality, is what makes this such a special perfume."[6]
