At the time of the 2013 census, Bosnia and Herzegovina had 141 municipality (79 within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) and 62 within Republika Srpska (RS)) plus the Brčko District (which legally does not belong to either entity), for a total of 142 units of local government. Following the 2013 census, the Stanari municipality in Republika Srpska was created in September 2014, out of parts of the old Doboj municipality. Its statistics are thus included in the data for Doboj in the table below.

All municipalities are governed by municipal councils and municipal mayors, with the exception of twelve officially designated cities, which are the biggest urban areas in the country and which are governed by city councils and mayors who hold a somewhat larger degree of autonomy in local matters. Ten of these (Banja Luka, Bihać, Bijeljina, Doboj, Mostar, Prijedor, Široki Brijeg, Trebinje, Tuzla, and Zenica) are single territorial entities, equivalent to municipalities for statistical purposes. The remaining two official cities are organised as agglomerations of several municipalities each, having both municipal bodies at the local level and administrated by city councils and mayors as a whole:

Note on sources:

  • Population data and names of municipalities were taken from the final results of the 2013 census, published by the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHAS), the country's central statistics agency, in June 2016
  • Data for municipal areas located in FBiH was taken from the 2016 Yearbook published by the Institute for Statistics of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FZS)
  • Data for municipal areas located in RS and Brčko District was taken from the Independent Statistics Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (NASBiH) website and rounded off to the first decimal
