Mary Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (née Butler; 1646–1710)[1] was a British noblewoman and the wife of William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Devonshire.
Biography
[edit]Lady Mary Butler was born in 1646, the second daughter of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond (then known as Marquess of Ormond) and his wife Elizabeth (née Preston).
In 1662, Mary married William, Lord Cavendish. He succeeded as 4th Earl of Devonshire in 1684, with Mary becoming Countess of Devonshire. In 1694, William was created Duke of Devonshire and Mary became the first Duchess of Devonshire.[2] She died in 1710.
Mary and William had four children:
- Lady Elizabeth Cavendish (1670–1741), married Sir John Wentworth, 1st Baronet of North Elmsall, and had issue
- William Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Devonshire (c. 1672 – 4 June 1729)
- Lord Henry Cavendish (1673 – 10 May 1700)
- Lord James Cavendish (died 14 December 1751)
