Elizabeth was born with the style of "The Honourable Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon" as the granddaughter of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, but gained the style of "Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon" when her father succeeded to the earldom in 1904.[1] Upon her marriage to Prince Albert in 1923, Elizabeth assumed the style of "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of York".[citation needed]

When Albert succeeded to the British throne as King George VI, Elizabeth became queen consort and was styled "Her Majesty The Queen" for the duration of her husband's reign.[citation needed] Upon his death, she assumed the style of "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother" to avoid confusion with her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.[citation needed]
