Surgical Body Modification is the process of modifying your body by surgical practice. The motives behind this action differ from preferences of aesthetics to health requirements.
Lips are an apparent feature of the face.Surgical lip augmentation began being experimented with in the late 1800s. Specifically, the first method recorded was the first filler Paraffin created by German chemist, Baron Karl Ludwig von Reichenbach. [3] However, the use of Paraffin was discontinued due to reported side effects like inflammations and infections at site of the injection. Today we now have access to none surgical options for temporary appearance of a larger lip such as lip plumper lipsticks, and creams . All of these methods are temporary and to those who want a longer fix, these methods are not the answer; fillers help sustain a longer lasting full lip. In specific the method of inserting hyaluronic acid into the lips has become a widely used method. The process, as explained by Thieme Plastic Surgery is injecting the polysacharride Hyalude into the lip then the acid will decompose which will form a matrix and create the illusion of a larger lip.[4] The tool used to inject the acid in the lip is a hollowed syringe which was invented by Irish physician Francis Rynd in 1844.[5] The syringe has multiple uses in the health industry but dermatologists and surgeons have converted its use for cosmetic procedures. The purpose of the augmentation of the lips are typically not because of health concerns but are for aesthetics of the face. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner have created the desire for full luscious lips and the procedures are constantly expanding and improving due to advancements in science.
Breast Implants are prosthetics that are used to form size, shape and definition of the breast. [7] Silicone is a polymer that was first introduced into the medical field in 1947 because it served as "a waterproof wound dressing." [8] Synthetic silicone was greatly used until the 1990's when it was discontinued because of reported side effects by women. In 1976, the "Medical law" was passed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). [9] Since the passing of the law, plastic surgeons have had to adapt the materials and methods they use while altering the breast. One method is Gel‐filled silicone breast implants. These are a standard in breast augmentations and reconstructions. This method uses two shells where the gel is on the innermost section. Like any other body modification surgery, the method for breast enlargement or reconstruction used differs from every person since each person's body has different properties. As any other medical creation the gel shells were tested thoroughly before being practiced on the public. In a study conducted in a lab by scientists these gel shells underwent "cyclic compressive loads" to test the durability and strength of the material. [10] The study concluded with the summary "doubling the maximum force yields a reduction of implant endurance to one third." [11] To sum it up, a the force a person would have to place on the gel shells would have to be a tremendous force and even if the force were to occur only one third of the gels would degrade. Body modification like breast augmentation have become more desirable and due to the advancement of science there are many options available for the diversity in bodies.
