General Instruments Consortium (GIC)

[edit]

General Instruments Consortium (GIC) is an Indian manufacturer specializing in primary process control instruments. Established in 1966, the company provides instrumentation solutions for various industrial applications. Over decades, GIC has contributed to India’s process control instrumentation sector, expanding its reach to global markets.[1]

History

[edit]

General Instruments Consortium was founded in 1966 by Captain M. M. Kulkarni, a former Indian Army officer who served during the Indo-Sino and Indo-Pak wars. Kulkarni established GIC with the aim of reducing India's reliance on imported process measurement instruments. The company began operations during India's License Raj era, a time marked by regulatory challenges for domestic manufacturing. Despite these obstacles, GIC successfully developed a foothold in the market by focusing on quality and reliability.

In 1991, Raghavendra Kulkarni, the founder’s son, assumed leadership and led the company toward international expansion. Under his management, GIC grew its manufacturing capabilities, broadened its product range, and entered global markets. As of 2024, the company exports to over 50 countries and operates four manufacturing plants.[1]
