General Instruments Consortium was founded in 1966 by Captain M. M. Kulkarni, a former Indian Army officer who served during the Indo-Sino and Indo-Pak wars. Kulkarni established GIC with the aim of reducing India's reliance on imported process measurement instruments. The company began operations during India's License Raj era, a time marked by regulatory challenges for domestic manufacturing.
