User:AmericanLemming/Noteworthy Wikipedians

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While you are free to correct any glaring omissions, obvious mistakes, or factual errors, please do note that I retain editorial oversight over this page, seeing as it's in my userspace. Thank you for your understanding.

This list of noteworthy Wikipedians is my attempt to both give credit where credit's due to some of our most prolific content creators as well as help you find active editors in your particular field(s) of interest. As a disclaimer, I should emphasize that this project is not comprehensive, completely accurate, or up-to-date, and it is certainly not the final word on the matter. However, it is unique in that it is the first attempt (so far as I know) to catalogue editors who have made significant contributions to Wikipedia in one or more areas.

They are two primary ways to find editors in a particular field. One, by looking at what editors say on their user page and examining their userboxes. Two, by finding the relevant Wikiproject and looking at the list of members. While both methods are quite easy to use, they are terribly inaccurate. Someone who says they're interested in history may have never made a single edit to a history article. The same is true (and is perhaps worse) for Wikiprojects: Just because someone's put their name on the list of members doesn't mean they've made significant contributions to articles in that area, let alone made any contributions at all. Similarly, an editor without a user page may have created dozens of articles on a given topic, and an editor who isn't "officially" a member of the relevant Wikiproject may have made more contributions than all of the official "members" combined. In short, userpages, userboxes, and Wikiprojects are terribly unreliable when it comes to helping you find someone to collaborate with.

So, how do you get more accurate information? By delving deep into the inner workings of Wikipedia and investigating how many edits people have made and to which articles. It's time-consuming, often frustrating, and (in my humble opinion) incredibly fascinating. I love Wikipedia's subculture: a bunch of (largely) friendly nerds who think that writing a encyclopedia for free is great fun. It's a lot of work, but I really enjoy it, so it doesn't feel like work to me. My general routine is as follows:

  • 1. Everyday I check the "Did you know..." and "Today's featured article" sections to see who wrote the article(s). I also check to see who the nominator was for recently promoted featured articles, featured lists, and good articles.
  • 2. I look to see whether they have at least 5,000 edits using X! Edit Counter. If they don't, I won't add them to the list (though I may add them to the "Potentially noteworthy Wikipedians" list).
  • 3. Having more than 5,000 edits doesn't guarantee inclusion on this list. I want to see focused contributions to the topic, by which I mean such things as the following:
  • A. 5+ featured articles and/or
  • B. 10+ good articles and/or
  • C. 25+ "Did you know?" articles and/or
  • D. 20-25+ articles created and/or
  • E. 50+ edits to 10 or more articles
  • 4: The above are guidelines (except for the 5,000 edit rule; that's written in stone), so there are times when I relax the criteria. I only want to put people on this list who've earned it, but I also don't want to arbitrarily exclude hard-working editors by blindly following these guidelines.

Alphabetical directory (old)

[edit]
Alphabetical directory

Old Introduction to Page

Note that this list is not meant to be exhaustive; rather, it is a collection of some of the most prolific and hard-working Wikipedians I've run across. Some of them have a large number of good and/or featured articles under their belt. Others do more than their fair share of reviewing at GAN or FAC. And some just create a lot of articles or have a lot of DYKs. Being on this list doesn't make you special, and not being on it doesn't mean your not important. Wikipedia is a big place, and there's lots of active editors I haven't run into. Also, I think that WikiProject Military History may be overrepresented here; I check the military history GAN subsection daily.

Why create this list, you ask? I know, I know, you can find people who are in interested in the same areas you are if you just look at the member's list of the relevant WikiProject. And the userboxes that everyone seems to use around this place let you know what they're interested in. However, they're one slight problem with all of that: many if not most of the people who are "members" of any one given Wikiproject are inactive. Thus, the point of creating this directory is to list some of our most active editors and what they're interested in. The goal of all this is to make collaboration easier.

Should you disagree with my description of your accomplishments and your editing preferences, feel free to change it. And if you know of or come across any editors who would belong on a list such as this, do add them. I just ask that they meet one or more of the criteria below:

1. 10 or more FAs and/or FLs
2. 20 or more GAs
3. 50 or more DYKs
4. 75 or more articles created
5. 25 or more GA reviews
6. Frequent FAC reviewer
7. Community leadership role (FAC delegate, FAR delegate, FL delegate, Wikiproject coordinator, etc.)
8. Prolific WikiGnome activity (reverting vandalism, fixing typos, clearing backlogs, article deletion, new pages patrol, recent changes patroller, etc.)

Of course, none of these are hard-and-fast rules, just some guidelines for what I consider to be a noteworthy Wikipedian. I don't even know if I've followed these criteria to the letter in putting this list together...

As far as my sources go, I have mainly used good article nominations page, the featured article candidates page, as well as the main page's DYKs.
