From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On July 1, 1867, the Canadian Confederation formed four provinces, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

New Brunswick

As of 2014, a total of 58 general elections have determined 58 assemblies. Although the 21st general election took place before Confederation, in May/June 1866, Elections New Brunswick recognizes it as election 1, making the 2014 election the 38th general election, and on or before September 24, 2018 the 39th general election will determine the 59th assembly. No changes have been made to the numbering of assemblies.

Nova Scotia

As of 2013, a total of 61 general elections have taken place. In 1859 a counting error occurred, naming what would have been the 21st election and assembly, the 22nd general election and assembly. Elections Nova Scotia recognizes the 2013 election as the 39th general election determining the 62nd assembly, making the first election after Confederation, held September 18, 1867, as election 1, and no changes to the numbering of assemblies since 1859. On October 18, 2018, the assembly will expire, and the 40th general election will determine the 63rd assembly.

As of 2015, a total of 65 general elections have determined 65 assemblies. Elections PEI does not number elections, as a result, continuous numbering, without error, is assumed. PEI joined Confederation on July 1, 1873. On or before October 7, 2019, the 66th general election will determine the 66th assembly.

Newfoundland

As of 2015, a total of 49 general elections have taken place. The 2nd general election, in November 1836, did not produce an assembly. As a result, every election since the 3rd general election, in May 1937, has determined the assembly one number less. Newfoundland joined Confederation on March 31, 1949, no changes were made to the numbering. The province was renamed to Newfoundland and Labrador on December 6, 2001, no changes were made to the numbering. On or before October 8, 2019, the 50th general election will determine the 49th assembly.

Timeline of Canadian elections

[edit]

The timeline of elections in Canada covers all the provincial, territorial and federal elections from when each province was joined Confederation through to the present day. The table below indicates which party won the election. Several provinces held elections before joining Canada, but only their post-Confederation elections are shown. These include:

The most recent election is shown with a box limited to four years of government, as the federal government and all provinces and territories have fixed election dates every four years. However, elections can be called at any time by an incumbent government. Thus, the box is shown as running until the next scheduled election, but one could still be earlier if the government falls due to a motion of no confidence, or if the governing party calls an early election. The maximum length of office as set by the constitution is five years.

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ Coalition between Conservative and Liberal parties (who won 41 out of 82 seats each).
  2. ^ The first New Brunswick general election was held pre-confederation and is not technically a Canadian election.
  3. ^ Power went back and forth a few times surrounding the 1878 election. For most of that legislature, the Liberals controlled a minority parliament with the support of some Conservative members.
  4. ^ Conservative and Liberal parties won 15 seats each (out of 30).
  5. ^ Although Yukon was created in 1898, the Territorial Council was wholly appointed from 1898 to 1900.
  6. ^ The Conservative party won the most seats, but the Liberal party maintained power with support from the Progressive party without forming an official coalition. Partway through the 15th Parliament the Conservative Party took control of government, but was not able to obtain the confidence of the House. See King–Byng Affair.
  7. ^ The Liberal party won the most seats, but lost a motion of no-confidence shortly after the election resulting in a coalition between the Conservative and Progressive parties.
  8. ^ a b c Coalition between Liberal and Conservative parties.
  9. ^ Coalition between NDP and Liberal Party.

Summary

[edit]

The table below shows how many elections each party has won in each province and territory. The Northwest Territories and Nunavut use consensus government, which means there are no political parties. Of forty-two federal elections, twenty-three have been won by the Liberals, and eighteen by the Conservatives.
