The European University of Social Sciences, or CIVICA, is an university alliance of European higher education institutions specializing the social sciences.[1][2] It was established in 2019 and has been funded by the European Commission.[3][4]

CIVICA brings together ten leading European higher education institutions in the social sciences, humanities, business management and public policy, with a total of 72,000 students and 13,000 faculty members.[5]

History

[edit]

At CIVICA's Bucharest conference, the public presentation of the consortium and its objectives, the rectors of the seven universities set out to educate the future generations of professionals in social sciences, in order to solve the most pressing problems of the world. Creating a European identity is essentially the long-term, fundamental objective of the CIVICA consortium.[6]

Professor Simon Hix, LSE’s Pro Director for Research, joined partner institutions in Brussels on 7 November 2019 to officially launch CIVICA - the new European University of Social Sciences.[7] CIVICA initially had eight schools, SGH Warsaw School of Economics (Poland) and IE University (Spain) joined it later.[7]

Between autumn 2022 and autumn 2026, thousands of students and (post)doctoral researchers are expected to benefit from enhanced mobility, new and expanded joint educational offers, and Europe-wide opportunities for civic engagement and extracurricular activities.[8]

Vision

[edit]
  • Deepen and expand activities in key areas such as education, research, service to society, innovation and lifelong learning;
  • Develop a diverse and inclusive CIVICA community;
  • Establish CIVICA’s lead role in the social sciences with further global outreach;
  • Set up a framework for sustainable institutional cooperation.[9]
