Canvassing

{{editprotected}}

This template currently says: "You must notify any user that you discuss." Please change it to: "You must notify at least any user that you discuss, and all of your notifications must comply with the policy against canvassing."

It's important for people to keep in mind that the canvassing policy applies, and therefore they cannot evade that canvassing policy by discussing and notifying only editors who share the same opinion.Anythingyouwant (talk) 04:32, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Not done Not done for now. Too controversial without discussion. Your change really doesn't make any sense to me; this notice only applies to users that are being discussed, so that they can defend themselves. This is completely unrelated from the policy on canvassing. The objective of this warning is not to remind editors to bring other editors into the discussion; it's to remind editors to alert editors that may need to defend themselves. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 07:05, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply.
The notification instructions in this template are different from those at the ANI main page, which say, "You must notify any user who is the subject of a discussion...." The notification instructions at the top of the main page resulted from a careful discussion here. Please conform this template accordingly. In the past, there has been a real problem that people at ANI will sometimes discuss only (or mostly) people who agree with them, and accordingly notify only those people. Thanks.Anythingyouwant (talk) 16:02, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Shirik, this is unnecessary - seems like a solution in search of a problem. The canvassing guideline applies whether we mention it or not. –xenotalk 18:34, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
It's a real problem, exemplified here. Some editors figure that if they only notify people who they discuss, then they don't have to notify anyone else. What's the problem with conforming this template to the instructions at the top of ANI?Anythingyouwant (talk) 19:15, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
It already does conform, the note at the top of ANI doesn't say anything about canvassing. And that post you linked (from five months ago) hardly seems like a wide-reaching problem, or even something that ran afoul of the canvassing guideline, and not enough to add creep to the edit notice. –xenotalk 19:21, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I guess it could be changed to match "You must notify any user who is the subject of a discussion." but I don't see the need for the bit about canvassing. Every post you make should be mindful of that guideline, there is (imo) no need to point it out. –xenotalk 19:28, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I'd appreciate if it could be changed to match "You must notify any user who is the subject of a discussion." That would be very helpful. No need to explicitly mention canvassing.Anythingyouwant (talk) 19:36, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Requested move 18 May 2016

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: No consensus. Doesn't seem like a pressing issue to resolve one way or the other. Template titles are not usually visible, and this is transcluded in quite a lot of places with it's current name.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:59, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

Template:You should notify any user that you discussTemplate:You must notify any user that you discuss – The name should be in coordination with the text. At the moment, the title says "should" and the template says "must". Anarchyte (work | talk) 09:22, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Template-protected edit request on 2 January 2019

add  ~~~~ after the notification template since the template does not automatically adds signature.

So replace " You may use {{subst:AN-notice}} to do so"

with

" You may use {{subst:AN-notice}}~~~~ to do so" DBigXray 16:39, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Not done @DBigXray: please mock up the change you would like made at Template:You should notify any user that you discuss/sandbox and then reactivate the edit request. — xaosflux Talk 16:52, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Hi User:Xaosflux, the Sandbox has been updated with the content that I was looking for. ( credits User:PrimeHunter ) Please update.
I made this edit request because the Template:AN-notice always require to be followed by tilde as mentioned in its documentation, but this is not clear in the edit notice that the editor has to add the ~~~~ after copy/pasting the notification template. I have seen so many editors (myself included) making this mistake of missing the tilde after the template. I believe clarifying this will be helpful. regards.--DBigXray 19:48, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Done @DBigXray:, I've synced in from the sandbox. — xaosflux Talk 20:15, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
