Collapsiblity
I might have spelled that wrong but I'd like to know if anyone can make this template collapsible, it is quite large and contains useful information but it requires a bit of scrolling past it to get to the bread and butter of some reception sections. Not a command, simply a suggestion. Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 20:03, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Add Famitsu
Since they are considered the premiere video game review scoring site in Japan, and neither of these seem to incorperate their scores into the aggragete i think they should be incorperated. Since this is used in conjuction with prose, i think without it there is some bias if we highlight the English reviews, but not the Japanese ones when they use compisite scoring rather than aggragete.陣内Jinnai 19:57, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
GameRankings
@Czar: Take a look at this diff. The editor passing by removed GR sources because they were causing a cite error. This appears to be a result of us defaulting GR=N. In short, they ARE in use, just not displaying. This may need some more thought/tweaking. -- ferret (talk) 15:39, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- Nice catch—I reverted my template change for now and added a tracking category (Category:Video game series reviews templates with GameRankings errors) for articles that have
|gr1=XX%
but did not yet add|gr=yes
(to turn on the column). czar 17:43, 20 December 2015 (UTC)- Thanks. I'll go through and work on some of these later tonight. I think in most cases the refs are probably defined inside the template, with Age of Empires probably an outlier where reflist definition was in use. -- ferret (talk) 17:48, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- Took about three hours but I think everything's resolved now. All ~140 instances now specify
|gr=
yes/no so I restored the original edit—GR off by default. czar 20:33, 20 December 2015 (UTC)- Just so you know, I was fixing these when they came up at Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting. There don't seem to be any video game articles listed there now. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 01:07, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Chart vs. graph
Looking at a bunch of these, I was thinking that it'd be nice to see them graphed (line graph) instead of just charted... not sure if there's an internal function for that or if I should go to R town czar 18:05, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
Year
Might be worth adding a "year" column too, or to combine such a display with the green timeline template to show more info at once czar 19:26, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- I see there is an editor working on this. It needs a bit more work first, but I am on mobile right now. Will help finish it in a few hours. -- ferret (talk) 17:27, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
- Tweaked to be a column. Should consider adjusting it to be sortable later. -- ferret (talk) 19:23, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
Reverting default suppression of GR
I reverted the by-default suppression of the GameRankings column because it contradicts intuitive use of the template. Novice editors should not have to look up that "gr=yes" is a required parameter when they're trying to add GR reviews; it should just work when they start adding the "gr1", "gr2", etc. parameters. Editors are much more likely to get frustrated when they can't figure out why the parameter doesn't seem to be working. It's a much smaller burden to do it this way than the opposite; experienced editors should have no problem in choosing to suppress it with "gr=no". Axem Titanium (talk) 06:29, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- The default use of the template is to not include GR, hence the way it was formatted. Since your revert, parameter-less templates will display a GR column even though no GR reviews are specified—this is not the desired default action, and this is why
|gr=
needs to be specified.Editors are much more likely to get frustrated
when they have a GR column showing when they don't need it, and need to turn it off in the template. Editors using GR in this template are already the experienced users familiar with its parameters. czar 07:28, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
This same behavior is already the case for other aggregators that the template supports. In my opinion, the real answer is that you shouldn't have to say "gr=yes" if any gr# is populated. The LUA code should be able to handle this. Same for fam and sales parameters, and even MC. Suppress display unless field# is populated. -- ferret (talk) 14:58, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- I agree, that is the ideal implementation but I'm not familiar enough with coding in LUA to figure out how to do it. I had enough trouble learning how to hack stuff together with wikicode without needing to learn another language. Axem Titanium (talk) 17:05, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- I know a professional LUA programmer I could ask to take a look, if someone can point me to an appropriate sandbox for him to work on. -- ferret (talk) 17:14, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- Module:Video game series reviews/sandbox and Template:Video game series reviews/testcases should work. Thanks! Axem Titanium (talk) 17:18, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- I've updated the sandbox with autodetection for all four columns. This "works" but because the behavior is so different, I'd like to get more input. I'm also going to have my LUA guy take a look later and optimize it if possible. -- ferret (talk) 17:40, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- In particular on the test cases page, note what happens in the 2nd test case where only the game is provided and none of the aggregators. We can put in a maintenance category like Czar did for GR originally in order to find these "empty box" cases. -- ferret (talk) 17:49, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- I made one more tweak. The sandbox will now override the autodetection if an aggregator is explicitly set yes or no. -- ferret (talk) 17:54, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- While I can't verify that the Lua is doing what it's supposed to, I agree with the concept. Thanks for working on it czar 04:54, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks again for the hard work. From what I've tested, it seems like it's working as we've described. Axem Titanium (talk) 05:24, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

I've made this change live. The template will now defaults to showing any aggregators that are populated. If the template explicitly specifies yes or no for an aggregator, that will override the auto-detection. -- ferret (talk) 13:09, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Pulling from Wikidata
Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games#Template:Video game review score czar 01:50, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
See discussion at Template talk:Video game review score#Video game series reviews concerning demonstration of building this functionality directly into Template:Video game series reviews. -- ferret (talk) 19:22, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
- This rewrite to allow for Wikidata utilization has been implemented. Note that there should be zero effect on existing template usage. Templates must be updated to rely solely on the series being fully populated in Wikidata, or have QIDs for games specified, before any Wikidata will be used. -- ferret (talk) 20:03, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
