@Theleekycauldron: I object to "later became responsible" because it makes the adult achievement appear disconnected with, or in contrast to, the boyhood achievements (and that is not the case). "in due course" is better because it indicates a development from the boyhood achievements (and that is true). Storye book (talk) 07:16, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Storye book: how about "eventually"? theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/her) 07:26, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Theleekycauldron: (Sorry, just seen this, have been away). "In due course" implies cause and effect, as in e.g. "If you don't pay your parking fine promptly, in due course you will be fined". "Eventually" doesn't, because you can say e.g. "The businessman was arrested for corruption, but eventually the matter was dropped". In the hook, what you pick up from "in due course" is the connection between the achievement of special skills and responsibility as a child (and the tacit understanding of the hard work involved), and the later, similar, hard-earned achievement at an adult level. So what you are getting is: no, he wasn't just given a plum job as an adult because he was a good networker, had friends in high places etc.; he was highly skilled and worked hard, and earned his high position, and look - he was already doing that sort of thing precociously as a child.
