Alon Blue Square
... that in 1987, the Israeli company Blue Square held the local Wendy's franchise, but failed?Source: [1]
- Reviewed: Western Block of North China Craton
Created/expanded by Ynhockey (talk). Self-nominated at 21:52, 15 December 2019 (UTC).
- The article is new enough and long enough. The article is neutral and I found no evidence of plagiarism. However, the article is missing inline citations for almost the entire history section. The hook is reasonably interesting, and appears in the source, but it is not verbatim from the article. What the article says
the company became an Israeli franchisee of Wendy's, reaching six branches, but folded shortly after
would have been a better hook, but it is unsourced. QPQ done. --Muhandes (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:09, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Muhandes: It appears that the nominator has further expanded the article. Requesting a second look. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:45, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Narutolovehinata5: The third paragraph still lacks sources. I presume Ynhockey is still working on it, so I am waiting for him to ping me when done. --Muhandes (talk) 10:17, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
- True, I was a bit busy lately and was unable to finish what I started after the issues raised in this nomination. Basically the unsourced information is taken from the Hebrew Wikipedia, which is in turn (as far as I can tell) taken from the Ynet feature I already added as a source for some of the facts. Therefore technically it's also a source for almost all of the remaining unsourced content. I will add inline sources as soon as I can. —Ynhockey (Talk) 11:17, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

- @Muhandes: Ynhockey has made the necessary sourcing edits and the article is ready for a new review. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:33, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
- Good to go. The hook is now verbatim from the article and is well sourced. I removed some unsourced facts and gave credit to the source article in the talk page. --Muhandes (talk) 10:06, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Ynhockey: by saying it failed, you're telling the whole story and giving no reason to click on the hook. Could you write something a little hookier please? Yoninah (talk) 22:26, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
- I disagree: for one thing, while it does mention that the franchise failed, the hook doesn't mention why it failed. If anything, readers might get curious as to how and why a Wendy's franchise could fail in Israel and thus would want to find out more. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:44, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Yoninah: Would you still prefer a new hook, or would you be fine with some variation of the original proposal? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 08:42, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- The only thing I don't like is the "but failed" part. It ends the hook on a downer. Here's another idea:
- ALT1: ... that Alon Blue Square, a private Israeli holding company with revenues of ILS4.8 billion in 2018, had its origins in a Tel Aviv cooperative consumer club? Yoninah (talk) 23:21, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- To be honest, I still prefer the original hook. It sounds quirkier and somewhat more accessible than ALT1. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 01:12, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Then go ahead and approve it. I'm out of this. Yoninah (talk) 01:37, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- The original hook isn't accurate, since to me (and most readers) "local" means within a neighborhood or town or maybe small city, not for the entire country of Israel. I've struck it; if the franchise is preferred for a hook, something new will need to be proposed. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:59, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe one of these two hooks will work:
- ALT2: ... that the Israeli company Blue Square held the Israeli Wendy's franchise in the 1980s?
- ALT3: ... that the Israeli company Blue Square owned the franchise rights for operating IKEA in Israel in the 1990s?
- --Muhandes (talk) 13:38, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- I think either could work, although admittedly it doesn't have the punch that the "but failed" wording has in the now-struck original hook. But since there was an objection to that wording and there could be comments that mentioning the failure could be unnecessary, ALT2 and ALT3 are still suitable. - New reviewer needed to check new ALT hooks, since they were proposed by the previous reviewer and need an independent review. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:27, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- Article meets DYK requirements, is free of close paraphrasing, and has its hooks cited inline and verified; I am assuming good faith for the Hebrew source used for ALT3. A QPQ has been provided. This could be good to go, but I'd like to know if the failure of their Wendy's franchising in the article could be further elaborated on. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 09:03, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- It seems like "Alon Blue Square" was founded in 1932, 1972, 1991, 1996 and 2003. I'm confused why 1991 was chosen for the infobox, when the first sentence in body reads "Alon Blue Square dates back to 1932". Flibirigit (talk) 16:58, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- I have updated the year to 1932. I think based on the original sources, it seemed like that was the first year that a for-profit company with Blue Square in the name was created. However, I think that's incorrect. In any case, 1932 is the original founding year for the cooperative that eventually, through many iterations, became Alon Blue Square. —Ynhockey (Talk) 19:07, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, that answers my question. There is another question above from Narutolovehinata5 looking for details on Wendys. I found this sentence interesting "In 1970, all grocery store clubs formed a union, owing to the desire to unify grocery prices across the country for unionized workers". I think it would be good for a DYK hook. Flibirigit (talk) 19:43, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Ynhockey: Is there no more information that can be found about their Wendy's franchise? One this question has been answered, the nomination will be approved. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 14:32, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Narutolovehinata5: I wasn't able to find any more information than is basically outlined here (already mentioned somewhere before). If this really interests you, I can try digging deeper into specific contemporary sources, but can't guarantee any results. It has been 30 years, after all. —Ynhockey (Talk) 00:02, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- If that's the case then I guess there's not much we can do about that. We should be good to go with either the Wendy's hook or the IKEA hook, promoter's choice. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:04, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
