Possible source?

Strong indication of UPE and public relations editing

[edit]

Looking at article creator's history, it looks like this was G11'd in 2010. The tone of the article is still also promotional. The account looks to be a WP:SPA for Zupan's, and one other subject before this account ceased to be used. Graywalls (talk) 08:17, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bolding in lead?

[edit]

@Cielquiparle: Thanks for adding mention of Food World and Food Pavilion. I've expanded the introduction a bit. Curious, do you think these store names should be bolded because coverage about them belongs in this entry? ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:15, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Another Believer Leaning "no". From what I have found so far, it seems like whereas Food World was a Zupan's Market concept, the Food Pavilions (aka "Zupan's Food Pavilion(s)") may have been a franchise-type arrangement. Cielquiparle (talk) 00:37, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, and thanks for your recent improvements to the article. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:16, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge of John Zupan into Zupan's Markets

[edit]

To not merge on the grounds that John Zupan is independently notable from Zupan's Markets. Klbrain (talk) 09:17, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This was spun out from Zupan's Markets which may not meet NCORP. That AfD closed with no-consensus. Since John Zupan doesn't appear notable outside of Zupan's Markets, I believe it should be covered there rather tahn its own article. Graywalls (talk) 19:49, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cielquiparle:, you created John Zupan during the AfD as a potential fallback. As John Zupan isn't really independently notable for something besides, I believe it should be covered there. I feel having both of them is a content fork Graywalls (talk) 19:51, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:CONTENTFORK, Most types of content forks are acceptable. There is a lot of media coverage about John Zupan in vintage car racing, for example, which wouldn't be appropriate in the article about the business. Cielquiparle (talk) 19:54, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose merge. There is enough biographical coverage about John Zupan to support a standalone article. These sentences in John Zupan would be undue weight if included in Zupan's Markets so would be lost in a merge:
    1. "He started working in the produce business at age 16, as a produce clerk at Sheridan Fruit Company, Inc., in Southeast Portland, followed by Corno's Food Market. For 11 years, he worked at Fred Meyer, eventually serving as produce district manager, and worked personally with eponymous grocer Fred G. Meyer, a major influence.
    2. "Zupan's hobby was vintage cars and motorcycles."
    3. "He was also part owner of an indoor soccer team."
    4. "In 2011, John Zupan died aged 66 in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident. When he died, Ron McKnight, former president of the Northwest Grocers Association, called him "a grocery store maverick, an innovator, a visionary"."

@Cunard:, Everyone is born, have hobbies and they all eventually die of some cause. I fail to see how those things add up to notability in anyway and while they maybe a milestone in his life, these are not notable. The soccer team thing would make him notable if he owned something like the Portland Timbers but it appears he owned some obscure thing. Graywalls (talk) 11:59, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If reliable sources did not cover the biographical aspects of John Zupan's life—his early career, his working with and being influenced by Fred G. Meyer, his hobbies, his ownership of a sports team, his death—then I would have supported a merge since everything about him would have been related to the company he founded. But since reliable sources did cover those aspects of his life unrelated to the company, I find them to be sufficient to justify a standalone article. While not what he is known for, those aspects of his life are encyclopedic content that is due weight in John Zupan but would be undue weight if merged to Zupan's Markets. • Oppose merge per Cielquiparle and Cunard. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:57, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
