[edit]"Xavi is the best midfielder in the world and one of the best passers in the wo source? 12:53, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Ask any football fan and they will say he is ONE of those. why removoe it, just like on fabio capello's page it say regarded as one the best managers in world football, theres no source on there, so why here? also on xabi alonso's page its got roughly the same quote so why dont you remove that aswell then. you must be a madrid fan. Dont remove it again. Hitcher1
Also, the Barcelona website says his name is Xavi Hernandez Creus, not Xavier.
Yonatanh 12:54, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
It's xavier hernandez creus ask any barca fan or football fan. and on the game "football manager 2006" its xavier not xavi. Hitcher1
- I personally think FM is a reliable source (hehe) but the editors here won't agree with you :) ugen64 02:10, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
Hitcher1 - citation added for "gamble to leave xavi at home...."
i've added some to xavi's top page, someone deleted last dont know why. alonso has virtually the same written about him and xavi is better than alonso so why not delete it on his then.Hitcher1
too much opinion on here.
man of the match for world cup 2006 spain vs ukraine was xabi alonso, not xavi.
Honours
[edit]In English we do not say Spanish League or Spanish Cup or even Spanish Super Cup. But we call them La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de Espana. Also when watching a football game from Spain in the English language commentators, on Sky Sports, ESPN, BBC, ITV, FSC, Gol TV, etc..., refer to these competitions by their correct names. Therefore I ask you keep my revision of the honours section. Rupert1904 (talk) 16:12, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Place of birth
[edit]The place of birth indicated in the table of information is different from the one pointed out in the article itself. Did Xavi born in a Catalonia Town Terrasa, or in the famous street of Barcelona? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.132.190.236 (talk) 23:23, 21 September 2007 (UTC) It now says that he was born in Bristol,Angola in the table of info. [edit]I read a article about him, did he father Joaquín Hernández a professional footballer? Matthew_hk tc 11:53, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- Can you provide the article? I personally haven't heard that. Who does Joaquin Hernandez play for? Isaiah (talk) 01:51, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
He has tatooed the letters C E S C to his right hand and got engaged. This should be mentioned. And his brief career in Bukake film, big in Japan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.109.115.206 (talk) 15:25, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Xavi or Xavi Hernández?
[edit]Shouldn't this article be moved to "Xavi Hernández" with an accent over the 'a'? Vasu619 (talk) 12:05, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
- English reports seem to just list him as plain "Xavi" (see here for example). I think Xavi is fine for the time being. If the English media begins to use his full name then we can move it. I'm going to create Xavi (disambiguation) now if that was your problem? Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits) 15:07, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I'm redirecting to Xavier and expanding that where possible. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits) 15:12, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Assists
[edit]This guy is the best passer in the world and makes countless assists every game. Surely there should be an assist section on his appearance table at the bottom that's what his game is all about honestly if you removed the goals and replaced it with assists lol it would even make more sense.
I totally agree someone add his assists at least for 2008-2009 there are easy to find.
Xavi was La Liga's highest assisting player with 20. Xavi was also the top assister in the Champions League with 7.

[edit]I wondering : Why the statistics of Xavi don't include Goal Assists ... like Messi's statistics ?! even Xavi is famous for his Passes !. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.110.96.5 (talk) 00:50, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Catalonia, Spain
[edit]Catalonia is in Spain. Removing this fact is considered vandalism. Use this section in talk to discuss if you have a problem with this fact and obtain consensus. Any change to place of birth without discussion and consensus will be considered vandalism and could lead to a block.
This subject has been discussed several times. Consensus was to leave only Catalonia, which is the region of birth. People say he is a Spanish player, since it is clear that he was born in Spain. raulseixas (talk) 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes but... Catalonia is a region of Spain. Consensus can not change or hide FACTS. And the fact is that in Wikipedia, the little local region of Catalonia is an invented state of Olimpics, or change its history to benefit secessionist little 25% of its population, or the money that secessionist local governor gives to Wikipedia to do this awful things is a shame... so please, put "Catalonia, Spain" in that photo of Xavi wearing a NON-official local regional casual sport training T-shirt. That cases of enciclopaedic corrupption are a shame for wikipedia. Thanks. And Catalonia is a region of Spain. Wikipedia must hear 90% of catalan-speakers, and not the money. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.9.201.107 (talk) 06:26, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
- I agree with this. The biased use of Wikipedia to promote a systematic indoctrination and manipulation of facts for political purposes should stick for now to the Catalan Wikipedia, until the international Wikipedia foundation can make a decision on how to properly intervene against the use of a public service for the benefit of some.T.W. Xavi stats not updated - Edit request from 79.176.49.67, 21 November 2010
[edit]in the right side bar it says: Senior career* 1998– Barcelona 360 (36) But in the article itself it says that Xavi has 540 appearances and 54 goals in Barca. which means the 360 (36) stats hasn't been updated for a while. 79.176.49.67 (talk) 21:27, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Xavi leaving?
[edit]It seems that there could be misunderstanding, Thus Barça has not yet announced about his departure nor his contract termination and they only said that Xavi is free to choose either stay or leave which is not 100% qualified by Barcelona, However there are reports claims that Alves confirms Xavi's departure which is not true news yet. Therefore please take this into consideration to change the section. Thank you — Prince Sulaiman (talk) 08:27, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

779 official matches
[edit]Hello!
The article says In all, he played 767 official matches, a former club record–now held by Lionel Messi[1]–and scored 85 goals.[2]', this is, however, contradictory by FC Barcelona, as, including the Copa Catalunya and Supercopa de Catalunya matches, which are considered official matches[3][4] and are perceived so by FC Barcelona, he played in 779 official matches with the shirt of Barcelona, in which he scored 87 goals, also according to FC Barcelona's official website,[5] while Messi played overall in 778 official matches.[6] By the way, it must be highlighted here the site players.fcbarcelona.com is part of Barcelona's official websites.
Lorry Gundersen (talk) 18:28, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
- That stats thing that gives Xavi 779 has the Catalan Cup as a proper competition... and you have the gall to mock "proper journalism". Give me a break. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 04:30, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello!
- This is totally pointless and serves only as a personal attack (in my humble opinion), and this is why I had reverted it back then, so I have nothing to say to this, other than suggesting you read again the content, because it's not only that "that stats thing" is coming from Barcelona's official site, but I have also explained why the Catalan Cup and the Catalan Super Cup are official competitions/were official competitions when Xavi played in them.
- Now, I must also say that I know nothing about them being "proper" or "non-proper" competitions, since I am not familiar with this categorization: the competitions are only categorized as friendly or official, and other categorizations would not only be unofficial, but also purely fictional in nature.
- My best regards,
- The content should remain as is (767 official games), and a note added at the end of the sentence to provide extra detail of the disputed fixtures (such as the extra competitions). Messi passing Xavi in official games was widely publicised last year (including from Barcelona (and Xavi) themselves), and it would be WP:Fringe to start pushing against this. CH Ahens (talk) 09:19, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello!
- Thanks!
- This is fine by me, i.e. a note or another column with those extra matches would indeed suffice (e.g. like it is here).
- By the way, I feel like repeating, as already said once before when the talk started, that Xavi's total number of his official matches for Barcelona is self-contradictory by the site of Barcelona, which has both numbers as correct: I am only explaining why the correct number is 779, but, taken into account the publicity of 767 as a total, the so-called Messi "breaking the record", I cannot but agree with you on an extra column as a compromise solution, since WP functions after all by separating events by "notability" (publicity actually), so excluding those that are not "notable", which is more like a magazine than an encyclopaedia, but anyway, and of course for the reason you stated, i.e. so to be in agreement with a consensus/the prevailing views.
- P.S. I: I am leaving the "Disputed" template flag message for now, until someone adds a note or a new column with the extra matches.
- P.S. II: For information only, whether Xavi congratulated Messi "on the record" or not is totally irrelevant (which is, by the way, also what any non-petty footballer would do), as he is not a football/sports statistician, or at least a journalist, and in general footballers' claims on how many official matches they have played do not hold any truth value. As usually footballers do not count the official matches they play (why would they?), Xavi probably had seen all over the news back then about Messi breaking his total official matches tally for Barcelona and so normally congratulated him "on the record".
- Thanks once more for providing a simple and good enough solution.
- Kind regards,
- The players.fcbarcelona.com link now credits Xavi with 780 "official matches" (or, even more erroneously, 870 "matches played"). Back in 2021 it said 778. So I question the reliability of this source. An uncited footnote at List of FC Barcelona records and statistics says He played 779 games if included 8 games in the Copa Catalunya and 1 game in the Supercopa de Catalunya on top of 767 ... that math doesn't work. I suggest the next person who reads this remove the {{disputed}} tag, as the dispute is based on a website that just doesn't seem to be reliable. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 23:30, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hello! players.fcbarcelona.com is part of FC Barcelona's official sites, though it's not infallible; that said, if you bother to check the matches there, since there are details per match, you will see one having two records anymore, which is why it reads 780 and not 779, but for 779 there are details of where and when these matches were played, scorers et c. No idea why in that WP article the extra matches in the note sum up to 9 instead of 12, obviously some (specifically 3) matches were not calculated, only the editor who made it knows why... I suggest the next person who reads this bothers to check the matches in that reference, for which I have to repeat it's coming from one of the official sites of FC Barcelona. Kind regards, Lorry Gundersen (talk) 17:13, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

Pronounciation notation is poorly labelled
[edit]The Xavier (give name) article is clear, the (central) catalan pronounciation, which is the relevant one given that Xavi is catalan is [ʃəβiˈe]. The spanish pronounciation is [xaˈβjeɾ]. So while the phonetics on the page are (more or less) correct (i'd remove the final rhotic in in xavier, given that xavi himself wouldn't pronounce it), it is incorrectly labelled as the 'spanish pronounciation'.
However his paternal last name Hernandez is of course spanish and pronounced as such, so relabelling the whole name phonetics as 'Catalan Pronounciation' would not be strictly correct, the the first name and (I believe) maternal surname are catlan, the paternal surname is Spanish, so how to label the phonetic transcription is not obvious. I think 'Catalan Pronounciation' is more appropriate if something concise is preferred, or one could simply remove the language. DoodleKaboodles (talk) 21:45, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
Don't remove Xavi (as head coach) until 1 July!
[edit]Officially, Xavi Hernández is the FC Barcelona head coach until 30 June 2024 (in addition, tomorrow there is still a match versus Sevilla FC that he will lead) yet. Regardless of whether FC Barcelona makes Hansi Flick official (surely it will be so according to the news in the sports newspapers), Hansi Flick will not officially be the head coach until 1 July 2024, which is when the new season begins. As can be seen in FC Barcelona's official Xavi statement: "He will cease to be head coach at the end of the season" (and not immediately). So please, don't remove Xavi until 1 July 2024.

– Xavi is a fairly common nickname for the name "Xavier", and there's a couple other Xavi's coming up (Xavi Simons and Xavi (singer)) that are starting to rival and sometimes surpass the Spanish footballer in popularity. - Support to mantain actual Xavi format, it is no confusion with nobody. Xavi is worldwide famous. Not Xavi Simons and not Xavi Singer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Panenkazo (talk • contribs) 16:50, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

Xavi (footballer, born 1980) → Xavi Hernández – Neither Xavi nor Xavi Hernández is demonstrably the most frequently used by sources, but the latter is the better title because it's more WP:PRECISE and avoids the unnecessary disambiguation. Furthermore, on social media, Xavi Hernández is used as his name. Frost 10:28, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose – He's more commonly known as Xavi. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 11:29, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support per NATURAL, and as a coach he's fairly well known as Xavi Hernandez.--Ortizesp (talk) 13:14, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support per @Ortizesp. Killuminator (talk) 15:02, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. Nothing has changed since the previous RM just a month ago. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:52, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support. It's more natural and recognizable to refer to him as Xavi Hernandez. Waqar💬 19:01, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose and speedy close. We just had this discussion, the community has spoken and a consensus reached. Nothing has changed in the last 4 weeks. 162 etc. (talk) 22:12, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- IMO, the last discussion was for determining the primary topic. This one is for this specific individual. Frost 02:54, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- However, the current title was clearly agreed. No further discussion is necessary. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:11, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose on the basis that another RM was recently finished, and because WP:COMMONNAME says use just "Xavi". This is a correct WP:DAB as well. Paul Vaurie (talk) 10:21, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
Explanation of move
[edit]I moved the article to "Xavi (Spanish footballer)" on the basis that the previous RMs confirmed the subject's WP:COMMONNAME to be just "Xavi" and that no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC exists, and that out of the footballers who have the COMMONNAME "Xavi", the only other is Xavi (Portuguese footballer). Per WP:WPF guidelines and historical standards, nationality is the first method of disambiguating players, followed by birth year. In the case that nationality works, as is here, we can use it. Paul Vaurie (talk) 11:02, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- You can't bold move an article when there is prior RM history. See WP:PCM. Reverted. 162 etc. (talk) 17:24, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
