Copyright of photographs
[edit]The copyright issue is questionable . . . it refers to an online album of photographs relating to images of objects from or historical information relating to Belknap Hardware Company, a company founded by the subject of the article. The images are excellent photographs and I would like to use them in the article. I think permission should be granted to reference the photographs in the article because they relate directly to the subject of the article, an ancestor of my husband's family. re: the pending possible deletion of this article: Would citing links such as [1] help? This link refers to a Kentucky Derby horse raised at Land O'Goshen Farms, which is the horse-breeding farm begun by William Burke Belknap. I still would like to make a case for William Burke Belknap as a notable entry apart from the Belknap Hardware, elected office, and public service associations.Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 14:58, 15 August 2014 (UTC).
I still wholeheartedly endorse a separate page for Belknap Hardware, Co., as suggested by other editors. I prefer, however that William Burke Belknap remain a separate entry.Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 15:09, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- As I've already said here, William Burke Belknap (1811–1884) is probably notable by Wikipedia's ever-more-stringent standards, though it would be wise to test this with a short and well-referenced stub before doing a lot of work on him. This William Burke Belknap most obviously is not, as nobody seems to ever to have found anything at all worth saying about him. The Political Graveyard site does indeed have some minor details about his life, but is (at a first assessment) not a reliable source – a one-man website that accepts outside contributions. It's not entirely clear that your husband is notable by our standards, either, by the way. I'm aware that all of this can seem very harsh to a newly-arrived editor, and apologise if it does so seem to you. Understanding WP:N is fundamental to enjoying editing here, and I strongly recommend it to you; in particular, please understand that notability is not inherited - having a famous great-grandfather does not make you notable, nor does being a minor figure in a famous business or having a horse in a famous race. Did you mean to say "not notable" in your above reply, which is what I have understood you to say before? The website I cited above is just one reference to one of many famous race horses bred, raised, or cared for at Land O'Goshen Farms. As for being "a minor figure" in a "famous business," I would say a figure in an unusually famous business, the demise of which affected thousands of former employees and distributors.Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 22:10, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
I see in the Political Graveyard that Belknap was a state representative. There are many other politicians at that level with articles in the Wikipedia, many of them not associated with anything else that's notable. By that measure, all we need is a reliable source to back it up, and I think most people would agree with keeping it. Stevie is the man! Talk • Work 13:06, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Just deleted link [1] which is no longer accessible. Trying to avoid link rot.Mitzi.humphrey (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 13:44, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
Notability
[edit]The sole claim to notability that I can dig out of the afd debate was that he served two terms as Kentucky State House Representative. This should be in the lead section if this is why he is notable but I don't see the references for this?. The article reads like someones family history research at the moment and notability his is not at all clear. Theroadislong (talk) 15:16, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, that aspect should be elevated and properly cited (if not already). Stevie is the man! Talk • Work 15:17, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
