Wayland Smith/Waylon Smithers?
[edit]I was sure I read that Smithers' name was related to Wayland the Smith. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.170.218.234 (talk) 20:24, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

There is also no source given for the reference that he was named after the puppeteer.2601:806:4301:C100:5CC9:7D44:20AB:AF35 (talk) 16:42, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
Year of birth
[edit]He was born in 1954. In S08E21 (The Old Man and the Lisa). Burns blames Smithers for not forewarning him about the 1929 stockmarket crash. Smithers says the event was 25 years before he was born. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.30.148.107 (talk) 02:36, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

"Flaming Moe"
[edit]Will the episode "Flaming Moe" lead to an update on his sexuality? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.1.66.28 (talk) 01:32, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

- I assume the IP means saying Smithers is gay. CTJF83 chat 01:47, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- Smithers has basically been gay since the thirteenth season. I think the topic is touched on more than enough in the article. -- Scorpion0422 01:49, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- I concur. CTJF83 chat 02:08, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

- I was just thinking the same thing -- this episode may be counted as his "coming out" episode. I think an update is called for. Seansinc (talk) 02:33, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- I see no reason to update the article, as it already makes it clear that Smithers is pretty much gay with not subtle hints since around 2000. I'm suprised he was only added to Category:Fictional gay males very recently (i.e. last week), but mind, when I proposed adding him to LGBT characters (for which there is really no dispute), there was significant opposition. Sceptre (talk) 18:39, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
- In the classic era, there was an argument that he was just "Burns-sexual", but in the last ten years, Smithers has more or less been openly gay. Still, he hadn't come out yet, which is why I felt there was no need for the category. Besides, the article touches on the subject quite a bit, so I didn't see the big deal about having the category there. -- Scorpion0422 22:07, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Have I dreamt that in the episode regarding Smithers senior and his radiation death, doesn't Smithers reveal that Mr Burns had told him that his father had crashed into the Amazon rain forest and been hacked to death by a tribe of Amazon women? Mr Burns suggests that this subterfuge will have had no long term effect on young Smithers who replies to the effect "We'll never know will we, we'll never know. 78.148.192.237 (talk) 09:16, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Mr. Smithers → Waylon Smithers – User:Phil A. Fry moved this page recently, without discussion. I moved it back, and he reverted, so I brought it here. He is very rarely referred to as Mr Smithers, unlike Mr. Burns. CTF83! 01:00, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- I could be wrong here, but I think more people know him as "Mr. Smithers" or "Smithers" than "Waylon Smithers." In the famous gag from "Rosebud" where Mr. Burns pops out of the cake, he is referred to as "Mr. Smithers."--Phil A. Fry (talk) 04:23, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- That's 1 instance. Another is Mountain of Madness by Bart and Lisa. But only 2 instances that I can think of in 566 episodes isn't common enough. CTF83! 21:07, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

- Support Rarely referred to as Mr Smithers. I agree that Smithers is the more well known name, but I don't see the point of having him at Smithers (The Simpsons) when Waylon Smithers is his full name. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 10:04, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Page title
[edit]I see that the title of this page was changed in 2015, but I believe that was incorrect. WP:COMMONNAME says to generally use the most commonly used name so, if the opening line is correct "Waylon Joseph Smithers Jr., usually referred to as Mr. Smithers", the page should be titled accordingly.
