... that Walter A. Groves (pictured) taught his first class at Centre College the morning after arriving at the school for the first time?Source: Groves interview (1983), part 1, page 3: "So a week after we landed in New York, we landed in Danville, Kentucky. I think it was about October 1, 1940, and we were put up by Dr. and Mrs. McLeod in their home. This was a Sunday evening, and on Monday morning at eight o'clock he had me in my first class here. So that began my career at Centre."- ALT1: ... that Walter A. Groves (pictured) received a job offer from Centre College by telegram around the same time he was forced to leave his work as a missionary in Iran due to the country's invasion? - This isn't a full review, but I'm wondering if a stronger hook can be found. The hook presented here seems like a fairly common work-life happening. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 22:03, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
- The ALT1 hook is much more "interesting" (per an actual DYK requirement). I did a typo fix. Maybe it should say who invaded Iran without the reader having to hover over or click the link. Stefen Towers among the rest! Gab • Gruntwerk 19:53, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- New enough, easily long enough, and well sourced. QPQ done. Earwig found no copying that I consider significant. ALT0 is not interesting, but ALT1 is. After a minor edit repeating a footnote from a later position, the hook sentence in the article is properly sourced. Good to go with ALT1. —David Eppstein (talk) 19:46, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Did you know? If you fancy doing so, I always have plenty of GA nominees to review. Just look for the all-uppercase titles in the Television section. Reviews always appreciated.

- Very shortly after Groves was married to Estelle Crawford, on March 10, 1925, the couple left for missionary work at the American School of Tehran (now Alborz Mandegar High School) in Tehran, at the time led by Lafayette alumnus Samuel Martin Jordan, as a part of the "Lafayette in Persia" program. Consider rewording this long sentence or possibly splitting.

- @Sammi Brie: Thank you for the review! All prose/ce changes have been made as suggested - if you want it, this is the quote from FN 14:
Groves was a very hands-on administrator who did not delegate tasks even as the complexity of the college mushroomed. He did secure some grants from outside Kentucky, for example from the Olin and Ford Foundations.

Sourcing and spot checks
[edit]- 1: Centre College biography for birthdate, World War I enlistment, magna cum laude graduation, and Louisville Presbyterian teaching position.
- 5: Groves papers at Lafayette College. The bio here mentions his track team captaincy, Board of Foreign Missions work, Albany retirement, and naming as pastor emeritus at Covenant.
- 14: Have to AGF on this offline book source.
- 17: Meeting minutes show resignation date (PDF page 329).
- 18: Austin College biography of Guerrant (as that's where he once was president) indicates he was an English major at Centre.
Earwig doesn't show any issues aside from organizational names, etc.
