Central University of Chile → Universidad Central de Chile – The official name of the university is "Universidad Central de Chile". The names of individuals, institutions, or places should not be translated into English. Isabel.Abedrapo (talk) 14:52, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:USEENGLISH. It is pretty customary to translate university names to English, e.g. UNAM, UNESP, UFRJ, University of Buenos Aires, University of Chile, etc. Walrasiad (talk) 20:34, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
- Support. Unless they're generally seen in English-language translation, we should leave names of institutions untranslated. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:11, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Support Ngrams shows the untranslated name surpassing the translated name in English WP:RS since about three decades ago [1]. 59.149.117.119 (talk) 07:55, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- But are these English language sources? Unfortunately, the university doesn't come up much in English sources or context to confirm common usage either way. Looking for them, references are scant. I only find Spanish language working papers being cited in the bibliographies, but that's still in Spanish. The only English version I can find from the university site itself Historical Review uses both forms "Universidad Central de Chile" at the top and "Central University of Chile" further down. It would be anomalous to be the only Chilean university on Wikipedia using the untranslated Spanish form. The others have their names in English: University of Chile, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, University of Santiago, Austral University of Chile, Catholic University of the North, etc. Walrasiad (talk) 17:44, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, these are English-language sources. Google Ngrams separates its corpora by language; that's what the "(English 2019)" dropdown is for (if you switch it to other language corpora you see the relative frequencies of the two names change, of course). Similarly if you search in Google Books for "the Universidad Central de Chile" you can see examples of English language usage [2], which are largely not bibliographies. The WP:OFFICIALNAME (how the university refers to itself on its own webpage) is less important than what name secondary sources use. 59.149.117.119 (talk) 21:23, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

- Mm. Thanks. But using your technique on gbooks, I only get 656 hits for "the Universidad Central de Chile" but 910 hits for "the Central University of Chile". Not sure if your numbers are different. Clearly the English form seems dominant, or at least Spanish form doesn't seem enough to overturn WP:USEENGLISH. Walrasiad (talk) 22:14, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- Support. That ngram (which is filtered to only have English) is pretty damning evidence that the Spanish name is common name. CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE (please mention me on reply) 17:40, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
