Recentism tag
[edit]In response to the Recentism tag recently added to the page, I am aware this page currently has a focus on the future of the infrastructure, however this page is still a work in progress and will be populated with historical and current information within the fortnight. Apologies for the imbalance that the article currently has. (User:EricITOworld 02 November 2009)
- I have removed the recentism tag having added more content PeterEastern (talk) 17:46, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
Rights of way comments
[edit]I have moved the text from User:Turtill here from the main article for discussion: "It has few footpaths and has only had a definitive map of RoW a few months. Many RoW are built upon and gated unlawfully. Suffolk County Council is the Highway Authority and they have stated that many of the gates along the dock are unlawful. The dock roads used to be handy for cars wishing to avoid the traffic gridlock and now the dock routes are gated the gridlock is now much worse. PeterEastern (talk) 17:46, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
- If you wish to add a section of rights of way then this could work. Possibly you could find references for your claims that "Many RoW are built upon and gated unlawfully" and that "The dock roads used to be handy for cars wishing to avoid the traffic gridlock and now the dock routes are gated the gridlock is now much worse". Possibly we should add something about the impending inquiry into the creation of restricted byways around the dock. PeterEastern (talk) 18:00, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
- I have now created a rights of way section. PeterEastern (talk) 21:32, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
Justification for prices and details for each car park
[edit]The car park details and prices were removed from the article today, citing Wikipedia:NOPRICES#Wikipedia_is_not_a_directory. I agree that Wikipedia is not a directory, however the quantify and pricing of car parking in towns in the East of England is a policy issue as identified in the East of England Spatial Strategy which says that the availability and pricing of car parking should be kept in balance with public transport fares and also with the costs of car parking in neighbouring towns so as to discourage the use of cars in towns. It also says the availability of non-residential car parking in the town should be regulated as a policy tool to discourage car commuting.[1] To understand the issue further I am building information about the quality and pricing of car parking in Ipswich, Cambridge, Colchester and Norwich. I am not providing full pricing for the car parks, but have chosen to concentrate on 1 hour and >5 hour in order to understand the difference. It is immediately clear to me that the cost of day parking in Ipswich is between 4 and 10 times cheaper than Cambridge and that Ipswich offers many more parking places in town and far more smaller car parks. I intend to explore Colchester and Norwich capacity and prices next. Please discuss the issue here before removing the content again. PeterEastern (talk) 18:36, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- Fyi, I am also then intending to add some overview information about bus fares in the various towns. When I have all this information I will be able to provide some assessment of the balance of cost of driving into each place and taking a bus or park and ride service as well as comparisons between towns. PeterEastern (talk) 21:27, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- All this assessment and comparison sounds suspiciously like original research. I remain unconvinced of the worth of including sample parking fees, and can neither see the worth of including bus fares. This is an encyclopaedia, not a price comparison site. Dancarney (talk) 23:22, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- I do see where you are coming from on this and the fact that this information is not available elsewhere in as a coherent accurate and current form doesn't necessarily make it appropriate here. One issue is that the borough claims to have 4,000 parking places when the total is actually 5000-5500 depending on how you count them. I have moved the details to this talk page for now and will then consider where it can be maintained in the longer term. PeterEastern (talk) 07:12, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the way Wikipedia works means that a third party source for (in this instance) car parking numbers would be needed. As for comments regarding costs of parking in various East Anglian towns/cities, you'd need a source that explicitly states something along the lines of Ipswich having been praised/criticised/highlighted/whatever for having far cheaper central car parking than other East Anglian economic centres such as Norwich and Cambridge. I wonder if, for some of the information you're trying to include, you should set up your own website, if you haven't already, rather than use Wikipedia? Particularly if, as you say, all this info is not kept together in one coherent form. Dancarney (talk) 09:57, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

- I appreciate that Wikipedia isn't a source and that this is a short term expedient, however there are external references to all of individual capacity and pricing information from the talk page so this information is verifiable. Personally I am considering setting up a wiki site for this more details information and also for advocacy information related to transport. I am not sure about the scope for this - transport only? Ipswich only? Transport in Suffolk? Transport in East of England. I think it might be nice and tight for starters - ie Transport in Ipswich and can then be merged into another if need be. What would your thoughts be on that? Possibly we would need a non-wiki source for the actual claims, but I think a wiki could be a good format for cooperation for other purposes.PeterEastern (talk) 08:53, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I think if you want to capture all of this you should set up your own site, perhaps in a wiki format. Dancarney (talk) 10:22, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Merger
[edit]Old cattle market bus station's page is too small and should be moved to this article like Tower Ramparts has and this article covers it. I will merge it on the 27/4/12 unless keep is decided.Wilbysuffolk Talk to me 18:03, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
