Alleged Controversy

[edit]

The school received national scrutiny after New York Post ran an article on June 11, 2007 regarding the pending discrimination litigation against the school brought on by a muslim student, Osama Al-Najjar. Tottenville High School faculty allegedly repeatedly humiliated and discriminated against Osama because of his muslim origins and for having the same first name as the notorious terrorist Osama bin Laden. Among the reported incidents of abuse, a gym teacher allegedly told him "I thought you were in the back of a cave somewhere" during a roll call. a math teacher, "Ms. Isola", allegedly referred to him as "bin Laden" and told him that he "would never pass". He was also beaten up at schoool by fellow students. The school's administration is also accused of looking away when the issue was raised to them. Osama Al-Najjar increasingly became depressive and attempted to kill himself in front of his mother. He cut out of school and disappeared briefly in 2006.

This "controversy" section is unsourced and it is one-sided. There is another side to this story and the author of this section of the article, as well as the media, is ignoring it! Citizen Dick 12:06, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have cleaned up the writing and added references. Since the school and the BOE is declining comment and that fact is noted in the article, I do not see a POV problem as long as the allegations are described as that—allegations. I have also added an "Current event" tag. Also, "controversy" simply means disagreement. "Alleged controversy" would imply that you doubt that there is any disagreement about what happened. I don't think you mean that, do you? wintersmith 06:08, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
