This page does not distinguish between the top 3 places and/or honourable mentions vs finalists

[edit]

I'm not at all familiar with this award, but it seems there is a discrepancy between how works are listed here, versus what it listed on the pages associated with the award, and ISFDB and SFADB.

Here, one work each year is explicitly marked as the winner, and a number of others are listed in a seemingly arbitrary order.

However, as far as I can tell from the other sites, what actually happens is:

1. A number of works are announced as "finalists" 2. Some time later, a winner is declared, along with second and third placed runners up, and possibly honourable mentions. (Although per ISFDB, as far as I can see, only one year - 1995 - had both finalists and honourable mentions.)

I don't see any indication of these runner-up or honourable mention concepts on this page.

e.g. as per the official (?) press release http://www.sfcenter.ku.edu/news.htm#130, in 2018, the winning work was "Don't pPress Charges and I Won't Sue", second place was "And Then There Were (N-One)", and third place was "A Series of Steaks". In this Wiki page, that latter pair appear 7th and 8th in the 2018 section.

See also http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/award_category_year.cgi?768+2018 (which does show 2nd and 3rd places) and http://www.sfadb.com/Theodore_Sturgeon_Memorial_Award_2018 (which doesn't, although it seems SFADB is inconsistent - some years do have them, some don't).

I don't know of any other SF&F award that similarly has runners-up, so there's no precedent to point to, or design solution to copy, but it strikes me these runners-up and honourable mentions should be reflected here? ErsatzCulture (talk) 21:17, 11 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The ordering of the non-winners is a bit strange, for sure- sometimes its alphabetical by title, sometimes its alphabetical by author, and sometimes its a mess. That should get standardized. I swear sfadb didn't use to list the 2nd and 3rd places (for this or the Campbell), but now it does (for 2016 and prior). The only award list I know of that records 1-2-3 is Dwarf Stars Award (which only reports the top 3 in the first place); maybe this list (+ the campbell) should add that? It'd take a bit of work, but not too bad. --PresN 23:05, 11 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
