Why doesn't the page reflect the fact that Hyper was created/released as an answer to the "hacked" versions (Rainbow Edition, etc.) of the Championship (Dash) version?

Elimination Mode

[edit]

This article doesn't reflect that the Megadrive (Genesis) version featured an elimination mode which was also available on the Radica plug n play game. This allowed players to pick a number of characters each and battle until one player's characters have all been defeated in a single round format. This is the only version of SF2 which I'm aware of that contains this feature. Shouldn't this be mentioned? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.25.211.88 (talk) 12:32, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A source would be extremely helpful. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 15:29, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Street Fighter II: Hyper FightingStreet Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting – The name in the lead section reflects this name (with Turbo in it), as does the game cover. Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting is simply not the correct name of the game. There is already a redirect from Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, hence this request. — Frεcklεfσσt | Talk 20:07, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's such a shame I wasn't informed of this move when it was made eight months ago, but anyone who has actually played the arcade version of the game would that the in-game title is simply Street Fighter II′: Hyper Fighting internationally. The word Turbo was only added in the Japanese arcade release. Just so you guys know. Jonny2x4 (talk) 07:35, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do we actually need the rogue apostrophe? It's nonsensical in English and is surely just a transcription/translation error, or perhaps a graphical flourish in the title rather than actual punctuation? Is there a source for this being the definitive title? danno_uk 20:28, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that word Turbo is redundant. Boxer Brick (talk) 13:28, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: moved.

3 editors (including the proposer) support the move and provide some evidence (particularly from Maestro2016) to show new title is WP:COMMONNAME. The sole opposing editor appears to rely on OR.

As a note, I agree with the proposer that move on 15 April 2021 was contra consensus. Had this RM not reached consensus, I would have moved the article back to its previous name, but fortunately that was unnecessary. (non-admin closure) Havelock Jones (talk) 00:40, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Street Fighter II: Hyper FightingStreet Fighter II Turbo – Lets cut out the erroneous pedantry and adhere to WP:COMMONNAME. The title screen of the Super NES version does add the word Turbo, too. Sticking to just what the title screen of the hastily released arcade chipset says ignores the entire marketing of the game and all the subsequent coverage. It's against Wikipedia titling policy to leave it out. Conversely, the Hyper Fighting subtitle is not particularly used in coverage, and doesn't even appear on the cover art of the home ports. Putting it bluntly, it's really foolish and poor. oknazevad (talk) 00:04, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for one, there's the Super NES box art. And the US arcade marquee. There's also contemporary magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly #50, already used as a review source in the article. oknazevad (talk) 05:52, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Additional comment: I'd also like to point out that the recent title was a unilateral move that goes against the consensus in the above discussion and is based on a comment that was not part of that discussion. In other words, Johnny's comment that "the word was only added in the Japanese arcade game" is wrong as a point of fact, and the move was done years later by a single editor without opening a new move discussion despite the consensus being clear in the previous move to include the word. Considering the absolute preponderance of sources that use the word "Turbo", omitting it's is completely daft. The question is whether or not to include the Hyper Fighting subtitle, which I don't think is necessary as is more often omitted than not (just as the article for the original Street Fighter II leaves off its subtitle for WP:COMMONNAME purposes).oknazevad (talk) 15:41, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. A Google News search gave me about threee times as many hits for "Turbo" as for "Hyper Fighting". BD2412 T 02:00, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the title should remain this way. It would be an unnecessary move. --Grandio lot (talk) 09:28, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Title screen says Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting, just like Street Fighter II' Champion Edition. Redsnack (talk) 15:12, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The arcade game was originally called Street Fighter II' Turbo in Japan, and the popular SNES version is called Street Fighter II Turbo worldwide. Most people recognize the game as Turbo, and most media coverage refers to the game as Turbo. The article title should be ''Street Fighter II Turbo (or Street Fighter II' Turbo). It's the original title (in Japan), the worldwide title of the most popular port (SNES version), and the most commonly recognized title worldwide. Maestro2016 (talk) 14:33, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • I looked through the Arcade TV Game List (which covers both Japan and US releases) and found the US arcade release is listed as as Street Fighter II Turbo, not Hyper Fighting. Electronic Games magazine also listed the US arcade release as Street Fighter II C.E. Turbo, not Hyper Fighting. I also looked through The Arcade Flyer Archive and can't seem to find any flyers for the game there. What is the basis for the Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting title? All I could find for it is this flyer (which doesn't specify a region). It looks like the US arcade version was released under both the Turbo and Hyper Fighting titles. In other words, there is no valid reason for the article to be called Hyper Fighting instead of Turbo. Maestro2016 (talk) 22:19, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • In December 1992, a Capcom ad published in RePlay magazine referred to the game as both Turbo and Hyper Fighting. In other words, the Turbo title was used for the game's North American arcade release. Maestro2016 (talk) 23:26, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I looked at the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection website, and it refers to the game as Street Fighter II': Hyper Fighting. JCW555 (talk) 09:31, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
