[edit]There sure is a lot of info about how to kill slugs. But what do they eat? What's their life cycle like? Well, nobody really cares. We should all get better hobbies. User: WangmanwithaplanThey should not mention slugs to children;good reason:penis part.
- Well now we have the biology, the slug killing advice needs some editing.Billlion 09:42, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- I found a lovely green slug in my kitchen. It turned away from the fresh carrot scrapings and fresh cailiflower leaf that I put down for it. As an experiment I left it a little piece of roast chicken breast and was surprised to watch it munch away until it was gone. 78.144.64.96 (talk) 03:35, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Read the bit at the end of the mucus section. Read it again.
Reproduction
[edit]Can we have a source for the claim by 82.33.116.160 that they sling sperm in the direction of their mates' genitalia? I no there are a strange variations in slug copulation, but this does need a reference! Billlion 21:50, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Small shells
[edit]Yes some slugs do have small shells. For example the Shelled Slug Testacella haliotidea has a small shell at the anterior of the mantle.Billlion 09:48, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
predators??
[edit]predators of what? - Omegatron 01:58, May 24, 2005 (UTC)
- Please clarify your question Billlion 18:12, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
- It says some slugs are predators. What do they hunt? - Omegatron 19:20, May 25, 2005 (UTC)
- I'm no expert but I did some googling. Some aparently hunt other gastropods [1]. Some (Testacella haliotides) pursue worms through their tunnels! BBC nature. Similarly [2] Testacella baliotidea. Billlion 18:02, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
- User:JoJan has corrected me. T. haliotides and T. baliotidea are the same species. See Shelled Slug. Billlion 20:44, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
Anybody know about the parasite that changes the slug's appearance and kinda controls it's mind?--The dez 19:29, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Slugs in cold climes
[edit]Does anyone know how slugs survive in extremely cold climates? I assume the eggs are able to stay viable over a 7 month arctic winter but I'm just guessing. I've tried email several universities by no response. CambridgeBayWeather 09:15, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
Wording of length ratio
[edit]The original wording was: "Ariolimax dolichophallus, a species of banana slug (dolichophallus meaning "long penis" in Latin) has the largest body-to-penis length ratio of any animal." If the ratio of body:penis (or body/body+penis) is considered high, that implies that the body is particularly long and the penis is particularly short, whereas the exact opposite meaning is intended here. I have changed it to "penis-to-body length ratio". Confluence 11:27, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Apophallation
[edit]In contradiction to this article, the apophallation article says that no replacement penis grows. This needs to be clarified. Shantavira 18:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
Slugs inedible?
[edit]The cited link relates a story where a man exhibited meningitis after consuming a slug. However, the putative cause of the man's meningitis was an infestation by Angiostrongylus cantonensis contracted from eating the slug. Because this species of worm frequently infests both slugs as well as snails, it is arguable that the citation does not justify a claim that snails are edible while slugs are not.
CDC fact sheet regarding Angiostrongylus cantonensis
--Symbiote 07:55, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
- This link is still referenced by the article and should therefore be left in, the structure of the section does not indicate slugs are inedible, just that care should be taken due to secondary problems from the parasites present in the organism. Never heard of cooking pork properly to remove worm eggs? -- Masterplan79th 04:50, 03 April 2007 (UTC)
- The article makes mention of "...improperly cooked slugs (for use in recipes requiring larger slugs such as banana slugs)". It would be interesting to have a section "Slugs as food": I've often wondered why we (or some of us anyway) eat snails with pleasure, but not, apparently, slugs. What a boon for gardeners if their arch-enemy could actually be put to some use... Nick Michael (talk) 13:00, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
A question
[edit]Can anyone tell me anything about those tiny little white insects or whatever they are which you often see if you look closely at a slug's body? Are they parasites, or do they help clean the slug like those birds you get pecking stuff off of rhinos, or are they something else altogether? They're kinda disgusting, but I'm quite curious about this. :D XYaAsehShalomX 22:54, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
- There are plenty of slug paracsites, but you would have to be much more specific to get an answer to that question Billlion 19:17, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
OK, I've often had to remove horrible orange slugs from the garden and stuff, and I've sometimes noticed very, very tiny white or pale coloured insects (or maybe something else?) running quite rapidly across them. I've also seen them on snails before, although not as frequently. I'm sorry for not being specific enough. They seem to go on large slugs rather than small ones, and the slugs don't seem to be irritated by them at all. XYaAsehShalomX 19:24, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- I've seen them, too. I think they might be some kind of mite. Poor slugs. D: 75.165.1.152 03:36, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
Yes, they are mites. Take a look at: [3] Invertzoo (talk) 19:58, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Stylommatophora = Slugs?

Gallery
[edit]I propose that the image stacks of pictures within the article, which to me do not utilize space very efficiently, be moved to a gallery section located near the end of the article. Comments? Pinethicket (talk) 10:37, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- No, per Wikipedia:IG#Imagegalleries. But feel free to organize existing images in the article, adding better description of them, adding better images of slugs, and/or remove redundant ones. Thanks. --Snek01 (talk) 22:27, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- I utterly despise noobs that quote WP scripture? What does per Wikipedia:IG#Imagegalleriesactually mean? Have you read Wikipedia:IG#Imagegalleries? Or do you just quote per Wikipedia:IG#Imagegalleries to sound knowledgeable? As it stands there are just a load of random images of Slugs all over the page. Some go left, some go right...might as well title them "a slug yesterday" or "or here is a slug in its natural habitat". Just random images as far as I can see.
- Why not put them in a gallery as per Wikipedia:IG#Imagegalleries? I bet you didn't know but pages that have image galleries suffer a lot vandalism than pages that do!
- Secondly why is this page protected?? From what I can see there is nothing to protect. The page is in a mess already. It suggests to me that some editors are having ownership issues over their little bit of cyberspace? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.171.23.37 (talk) 17:30, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

- I propose to review this article. Before going through it in detail, I can see that it has some problems. When you have responded to them, I will make a more detailed study of the article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:24, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
First observations
[edit]- Many of the paragraphs are too short. Combining some will make the article read more smoothly.
- Done I combined paragraphs throughout the text. Let me know if further merging is needed! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 06:28, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- Some of the paragraphs and facts stated have no references. These are not normally necessary in the lead section because it is supposed to be a summary of the information found elsewhere in the article.
- I'll try and provide some references, but this may take some time. I'll update when I'm done.--Daniel Cavallari (talk) 06:28, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've got a good book here. It doesn't cover everything in detail, but it will be a good reference. I'm focused on the Laevistrombus canarium FAC, but I'll not quit this GA review yet. There is much to improve! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 20:35, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
- Sentences like "Some species of slug secrete slime cords to lower themselves onto the ground, or to suspend a pair of slugs during copulation." definitely need citations.
- I am sorry I don't have time to set this up now as I have to finish packing, but the article Limax maximus has a photo of suspended slugs and also this illustration ( File:Limax maximus mating.jpg) taken from Taylor J. W. (7 November) 1902. part 8, pages 1-52. Monograph of the land and freshwater Mollusca of the British Isles. Testacellidae. Limacidae. Arionidae. Taylor Brothers, Leeds. page page 38, figures 58-65. John William Taylor made these drawing after sketches by Lionel E. Adams. Perhaps that book could be used as a reference? Invertzoo (talk) 00:55, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- The formatting of the references is inconsistent.
- Some thought should be given to the section headings and their contents.
Further observations
[edit]- The "Morphology and behavior" section is rather brief. It mentions the head and tentacles and the mantle but doesn't say much about the foot or internal anatomy of the slug. The article Land snail could be used as an example of how these topics could be covered.
- This section has been divided; Behavior is now included in "Ecology and behavior", following Project Gastropods standards. Still I agree that the remaining text is too brief... "Slugs" as an informal group includes a wide variety of taxa, which may be radically different morphologically (as in Veronicellidae versus Limacidae). Would it be better to focus on describing the similarities between them, or should we describe each group in detail? --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 18:05, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- The "Vestigial shell" section could be combined with the previous section.
- The "Predators" section could be merged into "Ecology". Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:53, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Comments
[edit]I'm stepping in. I'm traveling on vacation at the moment, so I don't have much access to primary literature now (normally I do, snails are my field of expertise). But I'll try to help as much as I can! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 06:35, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- I will try to help out here and there as best as I can, but I am currently about to embark on a 2-week trip, during which time I will be busy IRL. Invertzoo (talk) 00:45, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your quick response. The GA criteria require that a Good Article be "broad" in its scope rather than "comprehensive" as in Featured Articles. At the moment the "Human relevence" section (which by the way is good and well-referenced) rather outweighs the rest of the article. There is no hurry about this review, however proper referencing of the article is important. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:14, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- An Update: Added a good deal of info on predators and parasites, references included! Reference formating is still inconsistent though. Working on it! --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 18:12, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- The Predators and Parasites sections are looking good but the Behavior section needs attention. It is largely about one species of slug and its unique behavior, and includes two overly complex convoluted sentences (sentences 1 & 4). Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:07, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- I did some rephrasing. Please tell me if the writing is better and more understandable now. Furthermore, I see no problems in keeping the information on the Kerry slug. After all this is an exception to the general pattern of behavior that draws the attention of the casual reader, IMHO. --Daniel Cavallari (talk) 15:21, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- That's fine. I hadn't really thought about slug behaviour but I put the words into Google and found this which I thought was quite interesting. I will go through the article in detail in the next couple of days. Delighted to have you working on improving it but I wonder what happened to Rcsprinter who nominated it for GA. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:25, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

More detailed review
[edit]- "i.e. snails whose shells are too small for them to retract fully into" - I think this should be rephrased so as to avoid having "into" as the last word
- The Description section has several citation needed tags. It could be expanded to include some information on the snail's internal anatomy
- Limacidae, Parmacellidae, Philomycidae, Onchidiidae and Veronicellidae need wikilinks
- "other slugs coming across a slime trail can recognize the slime trail as produced by one of the same species, which is useful in finding a mate." - I think this could be better expressed, maybe in 2 sentences
- "Body mucus provides some protection against predators, as it can make the slug hard to pick up and hold by a bird's beak, for example, and the mucus itself can be distasteful." - ditto
- "A few days later, the slugs lay around 30 eggs in a hole in the ground, or beneath the cover of an object such as a fallen log." - This implies that they remain in company and lay in the same hole which I think is not the case
- "Most carnivorous slugs on occasion also eat dead of their own kind." - This could be moved to the next paragraph.
- "Slugs can be a vector of transmission of parasitic nematodes that cause lungworm in various mammals, so are usually avoided by hedgehogs and other mammals when other food is available." - I would suggest substituting "for the" for "of" in this sentence and I don't think the "so" is advisable. I doubt the mammals know much about nematodes.
- " which can make individual items unsuitable to sell for aesthetic reasons," - I would substitute "for sale"
- The lead should be a summary of information explained in greater detail elsewhere in the article. Currently the last paragraph of the lead contains information that is not found elsewhere in the article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:16, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
I apologize to the reviewer. I regret that this article was nominated for GA review by someone who was not prepared to work on it during the review process. In addition, the nominator had failed to check with the gastropod project members before submitting the article; we had listed the article only as a "C", and would not have agreed that it was ready for an attempt at GA. Although some improvements have been done now, and I may try to do a few more over the next week or two, the most active gastropod project members all have other business they are involved with, and I believe they are not going to be able to do all the work necessary to bring the article up to the necessary level. Can we perhaps withdraw the submission at this late date, something I would have suggested before if I had known that was a possibility. Sorry and thank you, Invertzoo (talk) 00:42, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- From looking at the instructions for GA reviewers, I see that the only way of withdrawing a nomination after the review has started is to use the fail process. So I am closing this review now and hope that this article will be renominated at a later date. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:01, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank you to the reviewer for all the good work. Apologies that this was submitted inappropriately, and I hope that it may proceed to a higher level not too far in the future. Invertzoo (talk) 23:10, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

External links modified
[edit]Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just added archive links to one external link on Slug. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}}
after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}}
to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:
- Added archive https://web.archive.org/20130719063513/http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/media/migration/forestry/forestservicegeneralinformation/kerryslugandotter/091207ForestryandKerrySlugGuidelines211209.pdf to https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/media/migration/forestry/forestservicegeneralinformation/kerryslugandotter/091207ForestryandKerrySlugGuidelines211209.pdf
When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true or failed to let others know (documentation at {{Sourcecheck}}
).

Lungs? Gills?
[edit]As cited above in 2012, The "Morphology and behavior" section is rather brief. And ditto at other Talk posts;
Are all slugs in Pulmonata? Do some have gills? More info! MBG02 (talk) 22:02, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
Predator species
[edit]Hello @YogurtLover5: I have reverted most of your edit [5]. If you have a WP:SOURCE for your addition of Catesby's snail-eater/Dipsas catesbyi I will not object to your addition again. However the removal of Sibynomorphus neuwiedi would be a problem because it is supported by the source that is there. Invasive Spices (talk) 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Please delete the video on this page (under “behavior”) that include two human hands annoying a slug. It is not treating the slug nicely.
