Descendant
[edit]The first paragraph states that Sheng Yan was a "descendant" of several other masters. For example, "...a direct descendant of Master Dongchu." To me, "descendant" implies that these masters had children, but on Dongchu's page, I see no mention of any offspring or a paternal relationship with Sheng Yan. I assume some other type of relationship is intended instead of the layman's concept of "descendant." Could someone who understands this edit the paragraph accordingly? Phlar (talk) 19:59, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- No. In Chán/Zen, lineages are akin to blood-relationships, like father and son; they substitute those relationships. So "descendant" is not so strange in this context. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 06:23, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- OK. In that case, how about changing it to "spiritual descendant" to make the concept more clear? Otherwise, I think many readers would assume "descendant" to mean either "blood descendant" or "reincarnation." Phlar (talk) 22:49, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
- Upon further consideration, it seems clear to me that this is referring to the concept of Dharma transmission or Dharma descendant/heir. There's already a section later in this article with the "Dharma heir" heading, so for consistency and clarity I changed "descendant" to "Dharma heir" in the lead paragraph. Birthdate most likely wrong
[edit]It appears that in giving the the birthdate Dec. 4, 1930 the writer has simply “recalculate” the Chinese LUNAR date of 4th day 12th month, which correctly should be 22. Jan. 1931 (and is given as such in the zh-wikipedia; cf. www.prokerala.com/general/calendar/chinese-age.php). The only reason why I don't change this now is that the French and Dutch articles give 3. Jan 1931 as brhdate. Thus anybody with reliable souces at had please verify. --Zenwort 17:16, 6 August 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zenwort (talk • contribs)
@A Chris80: I see that you have changed the birth date to 22 Jan 1931. Do you have a reliable source for this? The cited sources don’t seem to support it. Phlar (talk) 12:38, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
