Stamp of approval
[edit]- What makes a good article?
- A good article shares many characteristics with featured articles, and like featured content it must:
- be well written
- Read good to me
- be factually accurate
- Don't see a problem
- use a neutral point of view
- It almost seems like it wavers a bit when it talks about some of the controversy's, but all in all, it's good enough for good article status to me, for all I know the POV wavering could all be in my head anyway.
- be stable
- well it looks like there's never been a revert war here or vandalism, I see no problem here
- be referenced,
- Here might be a bit of a problem, a good amount of this article has nice references, but some of it doesn't seem cited much, in particular the uniform, arts, moray, computer systems, middle school structure, and curriculum sctions, and although it lists 19 references inside the article only 10 are at the bottom, you might need to clarify which citations go to which source. All those missing things might be inside those references too, they seem like the sort of thing that would be mentioned in a few of the references you have, but Good Article nominations aren't horribly strict, you've definently got references, it's just it's a bit hard to determine where they all go to, I didn't read what went on in your peer reviews and FA nominations, but clarifying the references can't hurt if you want to try again.
- and wherever possible, contain images to illustrate it. The images should all be appropriately tagged.
- No problems that I can see
- be comprehensible to an intelligent layman. Jargon may be acceptable but only after short description in plain words.
- Only odd word I remember was "fete", might want to wikilink that or link to wiktionary
- Good articles may not be as thorough and detailed as our featured articles, but should not omit any major facets of the topic.
- If there's something missing from this article, I don't know what it is
I think this needs a stamp of GA approval! :D Homestarmy 00:06, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit]The footnotes seem out of control, producing some beautiful but weird patterns. Anyone know how this happened? Stevage 12:39, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Alot of this article isnt referenced, and some of the claims need to be like the cost issue with the solar cars, and the PSA regulation on sport scholarships for example. Please show adequate references. Thanks =) Smbarnzy 13:44, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
What should be improved?
[edit]Yeah, I have written the majority of the article, and I am really stuck on what should be better. Any suggestions would be helpful, and any actual edits to the article would be more helpful. Thanks :)--HamedogTalk|@ 10:18, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Just make it more like the Aquinas College, Perth page, that is about the best school article going around for general information. Smbarnzy 15:40, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
How about a section on the recent phenomenon of 'ladsyness' in the Western Suburbs, and its genesis at Scotch? 203.59.66.14 16:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think its noteable.--HamedogTalk|@ 23:50, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Improvements
[edit]Here is a list of everything i think could be changed with this article:
Marketing Dept
[edit]- Remove - "Scotch College describes learning as "more than an academic issue; it is a 'total picture' which provides a balance between a student's intellectual, physical, emotional, relational and spiritual needs".[3] " - this sounds like it came straight out of the marketing dept and prob isnt relevant?
- Remove - "In 1905, the college became a founding school of the Public Schools Association, showing it to be by that time a well-regarded independent school, and entitling it to take part in the most competitive schoolboy sporting competitions in Western Australia." - This is blaitant advertising - becoming a member of the psa meant that you were a boarding school with alot of people. and the most competitive schoolboy sporting competition in WA is purely opinion. This is also not referenced.
References
[edit]- First mini-paragraph isnt referenced at all and it has alot of information.
- Info box isnt referenced at all apart from student numbers.
- Curriculum is not refernced at all.
- Middle school not ref at all.
- Some senior school not ref
- Novell computer system not ref at all.
- Moray isnt ref at all.
- House System isnt ref at all.
- Arts isnt referenced at all.
- Music isnt ref at all almost.
- Uniform isnt ref at all.
- Good luck getting secondary references for the above issues. Overwhelming the article with a list of primary references would not improve it, it would point out how few people have written independantly of the school itself
- I would hope the best references for Arts / Music would be results from local competitions, previous students who have gone on to successful careers in that field.Garrie 22:10, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
Other Problems
[edit]Neutrality of this article! clearly written by a person who favours SC, Perth.
- I don't favour SC, Perth though. I have no bias to the school at all.--HamedogTalk|@ 06:24, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- Unfortnately Hame, you may not think you have bias, but you have a natural bias because you attend that school. Smbarnzy 03:53, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- I don't attend Scotch College, Perth though.--HamedogTalk|@ 02:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Moray
[edit]Clearly, the camp is located in Western Australia. Yet the links all point to the Murray River - [[Murray River]]should be [[Murray River (Western Australia)|]] Garrie 22:21, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, and fixed. Thanks —Moondyne 23:44, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
Categories
[edit]I think this article should follow the precedent of others PSA schools, by having a category dedicated to it, and another to its former students SMBarnZy 07:59, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- We create categories if there is a need, not just because one or two others have them. —Moondyne 08:07, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
References
[edit]I have a few issues with some of the references:
- 9 of them are first-party and most can be replaced
- There are 5 ot 6 on the same book (Jenny Gregory 1996)
Could someone address this? Twenty Years 09:14, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- In the case of Building a Tradition, A History of Scotch College, 1897-1996, I don't think there's an issue with multiple references from the same text IMHO. If the book was published by UWA Press, It is reasonable to say that the research that went into producing it was sound and therefore is reasonable to be used as a majority reference as long as it's relevant to the subject matter. However, I would like to see the referencing used against this text improved by including the page numbers relevant to each reference. An example of this is Warwick railway station, Perth and Northern Suburbs Transit System, which I recently updated where the content at present is sourced from two primary source materials. Thewinchester (talk) 10:32, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- Jenny Gregory, for the record, is a quite notable WA historian - see [1]. Orderinchaos 05:55, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
Novell Computer System replaced
[edit]During the 2007-08 holidays, the Novell computer system was scrapped in favor of a proprietary Microsoft server. Many of the IT labs have also been upgraded to include Apple iMac computers which dual-boot both Windows XP and Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) as well as run Windows XP in Parallels desktop. This is a recent event, can somebody with more information please update this section of the article —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.161.138.188 (talk) 10:19, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
GA comment
[edit]For the article to maintain its GA status, the copyrighted images need detailed fair use rationales. Look to other passed GA/FAs for examples. Let me know on my talk page if you have any questions. --Nehrams2020 06:52, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Requested assessment
[edit]This article does not appear to have had a formal assessment by the school assessment team. It was assessed as A/low on 2nd January 2007 by User:Smbarnzy, one of the then contributors. Since then it has been promoted to GA. The article is well written with a good history section. The section on school uniform is somewhat unencyclopedic and of little interest to anyone outside the school. Some information on examination results might be useful. If the article is to maintain its GA status the referencing of the alumni needs to be sorted out as a priority. The statements that these people attended the school are not backed up by references in their Wiki articles. It would be best to add the references to the Wiki articles where appropriate and include references within the article for those people with red links. The link for reference 21 is broken. The article is somewhat light in general on references for a good article. The alumni (if proven) warrant a mid importance rating. Dahliarose 10:31, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Strippergate
[edit]The section Strippergate appears to be of rather low quality. From the press reports cited, Scotch College seems to have taken the lead in addressing anti-social behavior by its students and other young people in Perth. That is not reflected in the article. Also, where did the label "strippergate" come from. I don't see it in the press reports. Was it simply made up by Wikipedia authors? Fred Talk 12:07, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
GA reassessment
[edit]After reviewing this article, I noticed the following issues:
- The following sections are unreferenced: Cirriculum, middle school structure, moray, house system, arts, uniform, alumni.
- Several of the references provide 404 errors, per here
Due to the quantity of the work involved in order for this to be GA quality, I am delisting this article. It can be renominated in the future after all this is fixed. Wizardman 21:48, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
