Rewrite and POV
[edit]I tagged this as a re-write because it does not adequately explain what a Safety Management System is as a general system, how it relates to different industries and standards, various international regulatory regimes, and what looks like self-promotion as a large portion of the article. So, the titles, sections, and headings need to be revisited to show physical and process safety, occupational health and safety, public safety, etc. The references also need updating. Going through old edits, it seems that some of this information was present and removed. Unfortunately the management system page is also in dire need of a rewrite. I have rewritten the bulk of the content, although references to process safety, public safety for me are not especially relevant here as I think the emphasis is on occupational health and safety, which may have been a more suitable title but I think it works better than before as it is now. Two Points
[edit]This page has seen a number of changes in recent months that contain non-neutral references to Transport Canada policies. While it is understood that their are two points of view on Transport Canada's implementation of SMS, these changes only make reference to the Transport Canada website, not to independent sources, and are as such inherently biased toward the departmental management line. I suspect that these changes are being made by Transport Canada personnel with the aim of promoting departmental policy. As such, I ask that this page be watched. I have been monitoring this page and noticed several small changes which removed reference to criticism of Transport Canada. Today, upon visiting, I noticed enormous changes removing criticism and inserting Transport Canada rhetoric. The changes were made so arbitrarily that the page no longer makes sense. Under "Aviation," "died on the order paper" does not use encyclopedic tone and also needs a reference. Under "Australia," the word "recently" becomes increasingly incorrect with time--a date would be better. Kevin James Field (talk) 14:28, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

This article is slanted towards transportation safety issues. Probably due to bias on the part of the originator. Understandable that one would speak based on his/her own experience. However, a casual reader will be misinformed by the the lack of article neutrality and limited scope.Jccsems (talk) 13:00, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
I removed all of the irrelevant text relating to aviation and Canadian railways. As stated it was not relevant to safety management and was confusing, went off of the subject and detracted from the main subject. Blackrock36 (talk) 13:11, 4 November 2020 (UTC)
Update on SMS
[edit]I have updated the general definition of a safety management system, as this subject is really not industry sector specific. There is a bias towards aviation which I agree is misleading so have removed some specific references which would be confusing to the lay reader. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Blackrock36 (talk • contribs) 00:19, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
The apparent bias toward the aviation sector is likely caused by the significant work done in the aviation sector on adopting and integrating SMS. Many in the aviation sector remain unaware of the history of SMS and mistakenly believe that it originated with aviation (this observation is based on my personal knowledge from having been appointed to two FAA SMS rulemaking committees). This article would benefit from a greater review of the history of pre-aviation sector implementations of SMS. Perhaps the problem, though, is that because SMS is "hot" in aviation, many of the the people currently involved in SMS implementations are from that sector. Advertising
[edit]I had to delete the whole section titled "U.S. Private Industry SMS Model" since it consisted entirely of advertising for someone's product, whose homepage helpfully has a backlink to its "Wikipedia citation".
Originally I wanted to save whatever could be saved, but that only left the very first sentence, which was unsourced anyway. It read:
Since most of the SMS solutions in the U.S. are specifically designed for the aviation industry; non-aviation systems are rare.
