Vandalism

[edit]

As you can see at the very beginning of this article the word "penis" is repeated multiple times (by most probably a nerd teenager who just found out he has one), but removing it is more difficult than expected. It appears as if the page source does not actually include this, nonetheless, it can be removed if one removes {{Template:Roman government}}. And for some reason that phrase is automatically replaced with "penispenispenis" etc. even here on the talk page. Also I did not get any wiser from looking in the history.

I am fairly new to contributing to Wikipedia, and I ask forgivness for if I have used wrong phrases and if this is posted in the wrong place. Mqchen 20:05, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Consular prefect

[edit]

I was redirected to this page when hitting a hyperlink in another Wikipedia article for "consular prefect," yet there is no mention of that office or title on this page. Read in context, the office of consular prefect mentioned in other articles does not seem to be identical to any of those mentioned here. If it is, then it should say so here. If it is some related sub-species it should be mentioned and delineated as a number of other offices are here. If it is essentially different it ought not to redirect here. Obviously very late but I have no idea where any consular prefecture would be. There are praetorian prefectures in the late empire. There are prefects of the city in the republic. But I cannot think of any "consular prefect"s anywhere. Looking in Google Scholar I can only find references to Ambrose of Milan which seem likely erroneous since nothing else(?) speaks of it. Potential vandalism

[edit]

First time editor - I undid an edit from 01:31 March 5 2013 that simply removed half of the opening sentence. After correcting it I noticed that there were two other edits the following two minutes that deleted large segments of text with no explanation. I'm not entirely sure if this was vandalism or not, so I don't feel qualified to just replace the removed text. If somebody else could weigh in on this it would be greatly appreciated. 69.11.112.39 (talk) 07:54, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Republican governors

[edit]

What council was in charge of appointing them?ZFT (talk) 01:55, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If there were provinces that needed new governors they were first split into consular and praetorian (not necessarily the title of the governor but rather the status of the man who held it). A province did not always get a new governor: during the Social War, governors were prorogued basically indefinitely because the consuls and praetors were all assigned Italy every year. The senate determined which provinces the consuls would hold in the following year (as required by the lex Sempronia). If the consuls agreed on who should hold which province that was it. If they did not, they drew lots. For the other provinces, the praetors would draw lots.
Magistrates before Sulla regularly went to their provinces before their terms had ended in the city. They were then prorogued while there. After Sulla it became more customary for magistrates to conduct their duties at Rome then go to their provinces the following year. This was not, however, always the case: Cicero's consular colleague Gaius Antonius Hybrida for example was assigned Italy and took to the field during his term. He was prorogued into 62 BC. Serious work needed. Previously entirely unsourced?

[edit]

I think some serious work on this article is needed. It literally did not have a section for footnote references until I just added it. There is a lot of material on provincial administration that should be added. However, it is also the case that generalisations may be difficult given that the article goes from Rome's acquisition of provinces through to the end of the empire. A cohesive article may have to be patched together from multiple time-specific overviews. Ifly6 (talk) 06:14, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
