Composer

Someone in their wisdom decided to hijack this page and turn it into a composer without any sort of discussion or requesting a page move. I have restored the cricketer and created Rohit Sharma (composer) and added him to the disambiguation page. Spike 'em (talk) 12:02, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Why is this page protected?

I as a Wikipedia editor have a right to edit Rohit Sharma's page so why is this page protected.I need to add some useful and important information about him . WORDSLAYERCHAMP123 (talk) 05:52, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

I need to add something important about him. Raj P Mandal (talk) 11:57, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Multiple issues

This article is almost a permanent resident at pending changes review where the majority of edits are rejected. Despite best efforts at review, many bad edits have slipped through and there is a surfeit of POV throughout, often derived from dubious news sites. I've removed a couple of examples and flagged up some of the worst issues, but I think a subject matter expert is needed to review and revise the whole thing. Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 10:30, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

User:MRRaja001 has removed the multiple issues banner without explanation, though he has deleted one unsourced POV statement. I've invited him here per WP:BRD to discuss his actions. No Great Shaker (talk) 11:03, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

No need of any such tags everything is cited in the page. That sentence where you kept whom? Tag was written by someone recently, other than that everything is well cited. If you have any issues with the citations or references you can place, citation needed tag at required place. Thanks MRRaja001 (talk) 14:20, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

No, you have missed the point of the tags. Bare URLs, fandom, POV and weasel words are still there despite citations. It is the overall state of the article that is the issue, not whether there is some kind of citation tagged onto each and every sentence. Kindly replace the tags because they are valid. No Great Shaker (talk) 14:23, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Agreed the article is in a terrible state. Unfortunately, watching edits come and go for a month or so, I see no chance of it ever being any better than it currently is. Far too much junk - flags should not have been removed (in fact, I'd have added more) Blue Square Thing (talk) 16:34, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Thank you, @Blue Square Thing: I'll replace the tags as they are entirely justified. Do please feel free to add more, ha! Ideally, the article should be subject to a complete review but, as you say, what chance is there of anyone finding the time or inclination to do it when it is such a pile of junk? I generally read articles in full when I become involved in any way and this is unquestionably one of the worst I've found on the site. No Great Shaker (talk) 18:44, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

I don't know why I've bothered as I have only a passive interest in cricket, but I am so fed up of seeing this horrendous thing repeatedly cropping up at PCR, I decided to take a shot and try to improve it. In doing so, I've decreased its size by about 40%. The sections titled International Career and Indian Premier League still need considerable attention. I'll keep it in the watchlist but, sorry, I've had enough of it for now. Good luck to anyone else who takes it on. It really is abysmal and does no credit to Mr Sharma – with "fans" like those, he does not need enemies. No Great Shaker (talk) 22:50, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

After seeing some more dubious edits being reverted, I decided to have a shot at the IPL section and hope this is now okay. The main problem which is in front of me now is the international career section. No Great Shaker (talk) 05:21, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

Rohit Sharma Height information

Rohit sharma height is 1.78m not 1.73m as mentioned in a page. He himself during live session with yuvraj singh on insta mentioned this. Anshuranjan26 (talk) 18:44, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

I've removed the height from the article. Anyone got a decent source for his height? Blue Square Thing (talk) 18:49, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I am attaching YouTube video link where conversation between Yuvraj and Rohit recorded in which height is discussed at 05.40. Thanks Anshuranjan26 (talk) 04:27, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Removed sourced information unnecessarily

I have added awards list along with proper and reliable source. I wonder what's the problem with @No Great Shaker:. I think he is misusing his power. He call it nonsense. How it's nonsense?Messi, Usain Bolt, Tendulkar, Kohli etc also have awards in a separate section. So what's the problem? Dhina35554865 (talk) 20:18, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

The "awards" in question are non-noteworthy, amounting to WP:TRIVIA. You need to read WP:NOT as a whole to understand the site's position on this. The awards that have been mentioned are notable but, even so, they are only mentioned in the narrative without going into WP:UNDUE by giving them special treatment in their own section.
Please also read WP:BRD which stipulates that if input is reverted, it must then be discussed before being reinput and the discussion takes place in one place only, which is the article talk page unless agreed otherwise. As for misuse of power, I am not a sysop and this revert was outside the scope of WP:RPC so I have no more power than you do. Per BRD, I have removed your reinput until the discussion has been completed. No Great Shaker (talk) 05:08, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

I have struck through this discussion because User:Dhina35554865 is a confirmed sockpuppet. Please see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Ratan375/Archive for details. Having been involved, I don't think I should delete the discussion myself, but will be happy if someone else chooses to do so. Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 05:51, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

GAN

Hello, MRRaja001. As this has been nominated, we need to make sure it has the quality to succeed. I'll help all I can and will do some copyediting and tidying soon. All the best and stay safe. No Great Shaker (talk) 15:33, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

@No Great Shaker: Sure! Thank you. - MRRaja001 (talk) 15:56, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

One thing I've noticed is a tendency to name cities instead of grounds: Gwalior, Udaipur and Darwin all in the second section. Even if piping the city name, as with Melbourne later, I think the link should always be to the ground. Another thing is single-sentence paragraphs which are always deprecated unless they are dialogue. I'll look at these to be going on with. No Great Shaker (talk) 16:16, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

I'll be reviewing this! Note that I'm not a cricket expert, so if I make any comments that evidence an ignorance of the game, feel free to correct me. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 11:53, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

1. Well-written 2. Verifiable 3. Broad—seems to fully cover his career 4. Neutral—article presents things neutrally and fairly 5. Stable—article does not seem to be the topic of an edit war. 6. Illustrated—Well-illustrated, images look good.

Lead

The lead is supposed to be a summary of the article’s content.

  • ” Under his captaincy, India won the Asia Cup and Nidahas Trophy in 2018” – This isn’t mentioned in the body of the article at all. Incorporate it into the body of the text. Once you’ve done that, you can remove the cite from the lead—cites aren’t required for info in the lead that is cited elsewhere in the article.
Have removed this altogether as the competitions are of secondary importance. It was a recent addition that should have been edited out at the time.
  • Also, link captain on first mention
Done.

Early life

  • ” His mother Purnima Sharma is” – “His mother, Purnima Sharma, is” – The way its phrased, Purnima Sharma is not a necessary part of the sentence, so it should be offset by commas.
Agreed. Done.
  • Same with Gurunath Sharma in the next sentence.
Done.
  • ” His coach at the camp was Dinesh Lad who asked him to change his school to Swami Vivekanand International School where Lad was the coach and which had better cricket facilities.” – Kind of a run-on sentence. How about “Dinesh Lad, his coach at the camp, asked him to change his school to Swami Vivekanand International School, where Lad was the coach and the cricket facilities were better than those at Sharma’s old school.”
Yes, that is better English. Done.
Done. No Great Shaker (talk) 14:34, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Youth and domestic first class career

  • Link out on first mention
In fact, the link should be not out and have done that.
  • tournament. although he – Comma instead of a period.
Done.
Done. No Great Shaker (talk) 14:38, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Test matches

  • ”made his test debut” - Link Test.
Done.
  • ”by an Indian behind” – “by an Indian to”
Done.
  • ”During the first test”—doesn’t need to be its own paragraph; merge with the one before it.
Agreed. Done.
  • ” scored his 2,000th run” – link run
Done. No Great Shaker (talk) 14:43, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

2015 and 2019 Cricket World Cups

This section looks good.

Other one-day international matches

  • Fourth paragraph – “a matching-winning” – “a match-winning”?
Done.
  • Fifth paragraph—no comma after Dhoni, but comma after “in him”
Done.
  • The first six paragraphs all start with Sharma—maybe reword the beginning of a couple of them for variety.
Yes, it is somewhat repetitive. Changed to 2 x Sharma, 3 x He and 1 x His. Please check and see how that looks.
  • ” a then world record” – “a then-world record”
Done.
  • Do we know who broke the record? If so, please mention this.
Good question. I don't. Can you please leave this with me?
The given source provides the answer. It was Eoin Morgan of England who scored 17 sixes against Afghanistan in 2019.
  • Sometimes the national cricket team is linked, other times the national cricket team for the season is linked. For uniformity, please either do it one way or the other. If you’re going to link it for the season, then relink it for each new season in which it is mentioned.
I've made a few changes to rectify this but the links to tours seem to be correct within context. Can you please check again and specify any links you are unsure of? Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 19:54, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
  • ” In 2019, he scored the most runs in ODIs by any batsman, with 1490 runs” – move this to the end of the paragraph.
Done.
  • ” It was his 200th innings” – forgive me if this is a stupid question, but should innings be plural or singular?
Not a silly question at all. Cricket is sometimes a silly game and "innings" is one example of that. It is always plural.
  • ” After India v/s West Indies 2nd ODI at Vizag” – Looks like it might be an informal abbreviation—is there a way you could write this out? “After India’s second OCI against the West Indies at Vizag”, for instance?
Have revised this entire sentence and hope it makes more sense now. Could you please check?

Twenty20 international matches

  • ”the feat:” – should be semicolon (;), not colon
Done.

Indian Premier League

  • ” Mumbai have won” – “Mumbai has won”.
Done.
  • Last sentence needs a cite and doesn’t need his first name.
Removed the recently added sentence which made little sense given that his career is far from over, especially as it was unsourced.

Playing style

  • ”Sharma is considered” – Take out considered. Otherwise, editors will want to know “Who” considered.
Agreed and done.
  • ”limited-overs cricket” – no comma needed after this since next clause is not independent.
Done.
Done.

Achievements

  • ”During 2019 World Cup” – “During the 2019 World Cup”.
Done.
  • Just noticed this, but link four and six – both are mentioned earlier in the article.
Done.

Commercial endorsements

  • ” including the Swiss watchmaker Hublot and CEAT” – “including CEAT and the Swiss watchmaker Hublot” – to make clearer that CEAT is not the watchmaker.
Done.
  • ” In his career spanning 11 years” – take out “spanning 11 years”
Done.

Philanthropy

  • ” Sharma is noted for his philanthropic activities and promotes various causes such as animal welfare, health, and children” – “Sharma engages in numerous philanthropic activities, promoting various causes such as animal welfare, health, and children”
Done.
  • ” he had tied up with an online store” – “he had agreed with an online store”
Done.
Done.
  • On the World Rhino Day paragraph, that last period should go within the quotation marks, since it is for the sentence in the quote.
Done.

References

  • Reference 3 needs author, date, and publisher.
  • Reference 4 needs date and publisher.
  • Reference 5 needs date, publisher, and accessdate.
I've removed all three of the above as stuff about nicknames breaches WP:TRIVIA. It's fair enough if the guy has one recognised nickname but that was just over the top. I'm reliably informed offsite that he is in any case known only by his name and that the alleged nicknames exist only in assorted in media headlines.
  • Some refs have “ESPN Sports Media” listed as the publisher; others have “ESPN Sports Media Ltd.” Please make them all the same, either one way or the other.
It is a limited company so added Ltd in all instances.
  • For refs 33 and 34, capitalize “The” in “The Guardian”
Done.
  • For reference 35, the title is wrong
Well spotted. Corrected. I'm warning the person who did that.
  • Ref 51—have the last name come first for the author, since this is the way the other authors are listed.
Done.
  • For reference 58, the title is wrong
Corrected. This one was only slightly misworded; the first one was a complete distortion.
  • Reference 64 needs a publisher and an accessdate
I've removed that sentence as the source was not WP:RS and the information was in any case trivial (even if true).
  • Reference 88 needs a date
Removed that citation as it was non-RS but fortunately the second citation covers the information.
  • Reference 105—take out “dotcom” on the publisher
Done.

Hello again, Sanfranciscogiants17. I think I've addressed everything now but do please chack that I haven't missed any. I've taken out some stuff that was trivial or was badly sourced. Awards

Hi @No Great Shaker:, I think these are some of the notable awards of Rohit Sharma. Why can't we add them back, may I know the reason.

- MRRaja001 (talk) 22:36, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, MRRaja001. When this sort of information is presented as an indiscriminate list it's WP:TRIVIA but if an award is prestigious, like the Ballon d'Or or the Academy Awards, no problem. Sharma's 2019 ICC award is already in the achievements section here and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna seems to be prestigious, so add that with a good citation and it should be okay. Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 04:57, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
@No Great Shaker:, When these kind of awards are mentioned on Virat Kohli page, why not on Rohit Sharma page, Thanks. - MRRaja001 (talk) 05:00, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Sitush: can you please resolve this - MRRaja001 (talk) 05:07, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
I haven't seen the Kohli article before and I've just been scanning it. I see that it was effectively rubbished at FAC, largely because of having an awards section without context and lacking acceptable sourcing. Also, it's nearly five years since it became a GA and my impression from its history is that it has gone downhill from there. In fact, I'll read it through later on because I'm thinking it should go to GAR. Thanks again. No Great Shaker (talk) 05:12, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

MRRaja001. Instead of asking your mate to "resolve" this, I suggest you take your problem to the cricket project and let them consider it. Matters like these are decided by project consensus. I've said what I think and now I have better things to do. No Great Shaker (talk) 05:20, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

@No Great Shaker: Why are you concentrating on only Rohit Sharma page, why shouldn't you remove Awards section in Virat Kohli page also. Are you biased. - MRRaja001 (talk) 05:27, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
I've raised Kohli at GAR and we'll see where it goes from there. As I said before, take your problem to the cricket project. To answer your rude and arrogant question, I am not at all biased. I am not very interested in cricket, though I will watch a test match on TV if I've nothing better to do. My involvement with the Sharma article came about through its frequent appearances at PCR and I'm actually more interested in his philanthropic work, especially animal care, than I am in a rather silly sport which takes itself far too seriously and is overblown with pointless, trivial statistics. I do, however, acknowledge cricket's merit in terms of social history. Do not bother me with this again. No Great Shaker (talk) 06:20, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Sure i won't bother you anymore regarding this, Thanks. - MRRaja001 (talk) 07:34, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Should the GA Criteria be reassessed?

All the editors are hereby asked to convey their comments and opinions here regarding the GA reassessment of this article.--Soutut (talk) 10:08, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

The short answer to that is no. The GA review was completed by a competent editor in compliance with the recommended criteria.
Removal of content without an adequate explanation can result in your account being blocked. Per MOS:LEAD, the lead section summarises the content of the narrative and the paragraph about Mr Sharma's WWF activities is a summary of a substantial part of the article. That work is far more important than playing in the IPL, albeit he would not have the necessary publicity without his cricketing abilities. I can only assume you took that paragraph out of the lead because you think an article about Rohit Sharma should be about cricket and only cricket. That is not how Wikipedia operates. If a person who is famous in one field gains additional notability for their work in another field, the article discusses both fields – with, of course, due regard for WP:UNDUE.
Your edit summary is about the removal of the IPL content and you make the strange assertion that: "The removed part of the IPL section should only be written after the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Otherwise, it runs the risk of being unupdated". All content on the site runs the risk of not being updated so, by your rationale, the whole encyclopaedia should be emptied.
I've restored all the content you removed, although I will look at the last sentence of the IPL piece because it is poor and has crept in since the GA review. Please be very careful about removing content from lead sections and removing sourced content from narrative sections. No Great Shaker (talk) 11:03, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
@No Great Shaker Could I also ask you to take a look at the content removed the Soutut on Virat Kohli? — DaxServer (talk) 11:14, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
Hello again, DaxServer. That article has changed considerably since I ended the GA review and I'm not sure I can help as, to be honest, I don't really know enough about Virat Kohli or one day cricket. I share your concern but I think your best bet is to raise it at the cricket project. Sorry. If you feel that Soutat has seriously breached WP:PRESERVE, you could raise it at ANI (please let me know if you do that). No Great Shaker (talk) 11:50, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
The article has seen several modifications in the last couple of days and it was a bit hard for me to follow them as well. I'm not quite sure what to do. I'll ask for some help from the Cricket and India projects. — DaxServer (talk) 12:02, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

I apologise for the inconvenience that has occured. I am really sorry No Great Shaker (talk) and DaxServer (talk). No Great Shaker, you know that I am a novice to Wikipedia, so I have made the mistake. Anyway, let me put forward the reasons behind my removal:

1. Introduction of Rohit Sharma- As the lines were without any cited reliable source, so they were removed.

2. IPL Career of Rohit Sharma- Another editor, who is quite experienced and expert in cricket, has removed similar type content in another article. I followed him.

3. Virat Kohli- This article is already quite vast. A template regarding it is placed at the headline of the article. So, I think, we should concentrate on summarising and shortening the article, rather than unnecessarily elaborating it further. The section I removed was a mere repetition of the past sections only to expand the already over-detailed article with some hyperbole and superfluous materials. An editor had reverted my edit, which was also reverted by another one. That editor again reverted his edit. All can be seen and observed in the history of the article.

Ok, thank you and sorry again for the unwanted nuisance caused. Soutut (talk) 08:51, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

@Soutut No worries. The lead summarises the entire article. So, despite what the tags say, the lead, if properly written, can stay. I don't know about the article too long tag, but that can be discussed on Kohli's talk page. — DaxServer (talk) 09:22, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Hello, Soutut. Re your first point, citations are not normally used in the lead section as, the lead being a summary of the narrative that follows, they should never be needed there. Everything in the narrative must be sourced with an appropriate inline citation, per WP:V. If that is done and the lead is a summary only with nothing additional, then using the citations in the lead must be duplicative. You can justifiably remove content from the lead if it doesn't reflect something in the narrative. In those cases, it is usually because someone has written something in the lead instead of in the narrative and so you would just transfer it from the lead to a suitable place in the narrative.
On your second point, you should check the removal of content from the other article and satisfy yourself that it was justified and done correctly. The editor concerned may well be experienced but that doesn't mean they're any good at it and of course we all make mistakes – you should see some of mine, ha!
I'm afraid I've given up on Virat Kohli. The article needs attention from someone at WP:CRICKET who might be able to rescue it. I simply don't know enough to take it on, especially about one day cricket which doesn't interest me.
Hope this helps. Good luck. No Great Shaker (talk) 09:35, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
I've posted at WP:INDIA and WP:CRICKET for some help. Will see how it goes. — DaxServer (talk) 16:56, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, No Great Shaker (talk) and DaxServer (talk) for your response. No Great Shaker, I think perhaps you know the editor whom I am talking of. In the meantime, I have contacted the same editor with a request to summarise and shorten the article Virat Kohli. I have also asked for advice from him as you have admonished me of being blocked, ha!ha! Anyway, the template can be seen in the headline of the article. Now, if I take the responsibility of summarising the article, then I'm afraid, I shall face strong opposition from some other editors. Ok, thank you to both of you and you two have a great time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Soutut (talkcontribs) 09:49, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Nicknames

Ever since I started watching this article, there has been an issue over the inclusion of various nicknames. The article is a WP:GA and, as such, it has a high standard that should be maintained in compliance with site policies and guidelines including WP:TRIVIA.

More to the point is MOS:BADNICK which states: Nicknames and other aliases included must be frequently used by reliable sources in reference to the subject. For example, a sports journalist's one-off reference to a player as "the Atlanta panther" in purple prose does not constitute a nickname, and treating it as one is original research. MOSNICK goes on to say: Nicknames that are sourceable but not generally known to the public are not encyclopedic.

Rohit Sharma is not generally known by a nickname and the only citation provided is an example of purple prose. I have therefore removed the nickname parameter from the infobox and, per WP:BRD, anyone wanting to reinstate it must gain a clear consensus in favour. No Great Shaker (talk) 14:04, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

Rohit's height is listed wrongly, he's definitely not 170 cm.

173/174 seems closer to the mark. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2409:4042:4D99:2EF6:7DEC:2C6D:58E5:4822 (talk) 12:09, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Do you have a reliable source to confirm his height? Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 12:34, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Rohit's height is listed wrongly, he's definitely not 170 cm.: source needed

I forgot to check this last time, and although it's not 100% accurate, use comparisons to other players.

Rishabh Pant and David Warner are both 170 cm and Rohit is noticeably taller than them. Rohit stands marginally shorter than Virat, who's 175 cm. You can draw comparisons to other cricketers with confirmed heights to notice it yourself. 2409:4042:4E8A:41B5:8C02:E593:E853:87D3 (talk) 07:19, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

I think you're right. Will check it out later to find a source if possible. Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 08:09, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

Okay, I'm on laptop now so I can check this more easily. The majority of sites say he is around 174 to 175 cm or about 5'9" but I can't be sure if any of these sites are WP:RS. Having said that, our article itself has no source for 5'7" so I'm changing it to 5'9" on the basis of consensus, both on the internet and here between us two. If anyone objects, they can raise it here. I'll send you a separate welcome message, btw. No Great Shaker (talk) 08:55, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

T20I retirement?

The article says "Sharma retired from T20I cricket in 2023." This has no source, and I'm not able to verify this online. 2607:F6D0:D:3534:1:3534:0:B3 (talk) 22:13, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Don’t think this should be a good article

I took one look at the first paragraph, and had three spelling/grammar edits in the first paragraph of the lede alone (“six-hitting” was misspelled as “six-hiting,” “considered as one of the best batsman” is grammatically incorrect and I had to change “batsman” to “batsmen”). Additionally, the writing style of the lede is clunky (“known for six-hitting abilities” is not a phrase on any other article on cricket), and I also had to replace a first-name reference (a sentence said “Rohit is known for” when it should have been “Sharma is known for”).

If there’s so many issues with just the first paragraph of the lede, I’m guessing there’s also issues elsewhere in this article, and I think it merits a review. Tejas Subramaniam (talk) 21:36, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
