How is his surname pronounced? I've heard harts-horne and hart-shorne, i.e. without the "sh" sound and with the "sh" sound. Presumably he only uses one pronunciation, and there must be some people who know from having met him or from working with people who had previously worked with him. Perhaps we could put an IPA description of its pronunciation? Owen Jones (talk) 10:04, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Years ago a mathematician told me that there is a mathematician Hartshorne who definitely pronounces his name "hart-shorn." Unfortunately that's the best that I can do. Richard Hartshorne (the geographer) and Charles Hartshorne (the philosopher), who were two among more brothers, both pronounced their name "harts-horn" and I assume that all the brothers did. Robin is not son to either of them but I don't know that he isn't their nephew. I found Robin's home page just now, maybe you can ask him about the pronunciation.
