I'm not sure that retarders always grip the wheel flanges to brake wagons/cars. I was under the impression that the Dowty system (which was popular in the UK and I understand was also installed in some yards in the US) the retarders were depressed by the wheel flanges and either resisted this depression or gave the wheel a little kick to slow it down or speed upBaseTurnComplete (talk) 21:03, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
