train differentials
[edit]hi as i wanted to know is that since the rollers are casted they are fixed and unlikely like automobile don have a differential so on the turn ho is it that the railway turn on a turn. is it that there is some mechanism which help the tires to rotate faster then the other ??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.242.78.215 (talk • contribs) 01:33, October 30, 2009
- Typically, railroad wheels are mounted to solid axles. The shape of the wheel treads and the tops of the rails are slightly conical such that as the axle goes around a turn, the wheel on the outer side of the turn moves to the thicker part while the wheel on the inner side of the turn moves to the thinner part. See Wheelset (rail transport) for more information. Slambo (Speak) 15:19, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
