From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi! I have just created this article (also thanks to Adolphus for his edits). Previously, I have compiled some information and pictures about this topic on my web site - http://railtrips.euweb.cz/c_gua_rail_en.html . Do you think we can include it as an external link in the article?

Thanks!

Line measures, network length

[edit]

Sources state the following as the network length:

Wikipedia 'List of countries by rail transport network size': 885km.

World Bank: 903km.

OS Nock 'Atlas of World Railways, 1978, ISBN 0861340035': 914km (which is suspicious as that is also the track gauge).

Jim Fergusson: 931km with some lines not measured / errors.

Theo Stolz (http://www.le-rail.ch/text/projekt33.htm): 857km.

Main historic network:

599.36 Puerto Barrios to Tecun Uman

32.96 Santa Maria to San Jose

15.04 Mulua to San Felipe

29.44 Las Cruces to Champerico

20.80 Tecun Uman to Ocos

113.00 Zacapa to El Salvador border

4.80 Palo Gordo to San Antonio

4.48 Guatemala City to Guarda Viejo

45.00 Panzós to Pancajche

44.80 (Retalhuleu - Mulua) San Felipe to Quetzaltenango

909.68 sub-total

6.25 newer branch to Santo Tomás de Castilla

7.00 branch to Puerto Quetzal (near San Jose)

Fruit Plantation lines A (from Jim Fergusson sheet)

39.90 Bananera to Quirigua - this is an error on the Fergusson sheet, stated as km

42.30 Rio Bravo to Empalme Sur

Fruit Plantation lines B (not measured on Jim Fergusson sheet)

36.10 La Inca / El Quetzalito

26.94 Oneida Empalme to San Miguel

11.53 Sioux to Quebrados

? Barranca branch

8.20 La Junta branch

Fruit Plantation lines C (identified from historic maps)

3.50 Playitas area, branch

10.57 Playitas area, loop off

Sugar Plantation lines

3.00 Pantaleon suger network, connection from main line to works only

1.00 Palo Gordo refinery, connection from main line to works only

1105.97km in total.

Additionally a line of the Cuyamel Fruit Company operated from Omoa in Honduras into 'disputed' territory in the Jimerto area. 8.23km approximately in Guatemala, closed 1923.

The two decimal place measures are due to conversion from miles, not a desperate need for accuracy! AdrianintheUK (talk) 21:16, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
