Can natural-source radio signals be used? Practicality of analyzing an exoplanet's atmosphere?

Makes sense that the GPS constellation would be used as a convenient source of strong, predictable radio signals. But could a natural source -- i.e., the objects that are targets of radio astronomy -- also be used? Or are those signals too weak? Or is it too difficult to measure the Doppler shift in those signals?

If the answer is yes, natural sources can be used, here is a follow-up question: would it be practical to use radio occultation to probe the atmosphere of an exoplanet? 50.198.139.201 (talk) 00:06, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
