Mental health and Woman and Infants
[edit]Both the Mental Health and the African Americans and mental health section only referred to the minority group of African Americans. To make the article more cohesive they were added as a subsection in the section on African Americans. A similar pattern was observed in the woman and infants section, it only talked about African Americans, so it was moved to that section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Claudiaisabel15 (talk • contribs) 21:44, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Race and Health in the United States
The Article’s Lead I think the articles lead could use a little more organization. It does well in including the important components of the article but delivers them in a choppy structure.
The Article’s Structure The structure of most sections makes sense. I feel like there should be more emphasize on the fact that other races are not really talked about but that statistics are used to support the fact that race leads to a difference in care. From the lead I got that other races would be mentioned here and there but they were really only mentioned in support of information of blacks and/ or african americans.
Balance of Viewpoints I think the viewpoint that this article is written is mainly from facts stated in sources. It talks about a view different things and I think this provides a holistic view of the care african americans receive. Length of section in Relation to Sources/Importance I feel like the section about maternal and child health is very short compared to the section that is before and the one that is after. There is definitely information that can be added to this section. There has been much controversy about the care that black women receive and its relation to the mortality trends that follow. There is also data about what this means for the children whether they survive or not. If they do survive they are faced with different life obstacles that maybe could have been prevented if their mothers had received proper care and survived labor. There is also the three sections in the end that are very short compared to the rest. Racism towards doctors and health care professionals, Homicide, and Trends sounds like tough topics to find information on so this might be why. These areas sound like thoughts that were begun but not completed.
Neutral Tone and Content (the peer review training module has a useful review) The article does good on staying on the side of the facts and not sounding like it is arguing against something. When something argumentative is brought up it is followed with a source which provides for more information.
Reliable Sources/Accessible Sources Sources seem like they are reliable, they come from a variety of publications and journals

Peer Review
[edit]Lead section is a bit lengthy, last two sentences I think are not necessary.
Mixed use of terminology, specifically “White” or “Caucasian” could be clarified.
In “Latino, Hispanic Populations”, I was a little confused by the way Hispanic/Latino was used interchangeably. The content of the section is great, though I would stick to using “Hispanic/Latino” in all instances, and adding a couple of sentences defining the terms as I think it is an important aspect of how race is integrated into society in the U.S.
Use of the first person in the article is also a small technical detail that could be improved.
In the “Mental Health” section under “Native Americans and Alaska Natives”, I think a clarification on what NHW stands for could help. It is used several times, though I don’t think it is stated as an abbreviation anywhere.
Overall, I think the new additions are very informative and very well structured. A gap I see in the information would be consistent information within the Maternal and Child Health section. Some sections have infant mortality rates, but I think one does not. I also think having maternal mortality rates for each group would be a good indicator of maternal health in the US. I think this information can be accessed through data from sources such as the CDC, NIH, or various health and medical journals. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zxp09 (talk • contribs) 23:46, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Possible Additions to Native American and Asian American Sections
[edit]Our group is planning on adding sections and information to the Native American and Asian American sections. For the Native Americans we're going to create a section on Environmental Racism expand the History section. For the Asian American section we will expand the History, Maternal and Child Health, and Mental Health sections. We are considering adding a section for Middle Eastern Americans, beginning with a section on History. 4/15/2020 Rossc936 (talk) 21:32, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
Suggestions for article improvement
[edit]Overall, this article is very informative and well-cited. The Lead has a good introductory sentence that describes the main point of the article. The Lead does well in providing an introduction to the rest of the article, but could include some more specifics about the major sections of the article. Since this is a census year, the “Background” section could be updated to reflect that the 2020 Census is happening this year in a brief sentence where the other censuses are mentioned.
Under the “Life expectancy” section, it may be useful to the reader to add information about life expectancies within racial groups after controlling for income and as you did for education. I think similar information is mentioned elsewhere in the article, but it may help to have it clearly stated in this section so readers are immediately made aware that these disparities exist outside of income levels as well. In addition, the “Socioeconomic factors” section spends more time talking about education levels than socioeconomic status directly. While the two are certainly related, and I thought the information included was very important, it might be good to draw the connection between socioeconomic status and education directly here, or add more about socioeconomic status in general. At a couple of points, the term "minority groups" was used but did not include Asian Americans, even though they are also a minority group.
The sources used here were reliable, varied, and extensive for the most part. However, this article could be improved by including more citations in the “Latinos and Hispanics” section, so that the readers know all of the great information there is from reliable and valuable sources. Similarly, at a couple of points language such as “this suggests” and “it is imperative” gave the impression of non-neutrality, but the overall language of the article was neutral. In those few cases, it may help to have one or more sources drawing the conclusions, so that it does not appear that the Wikipedia editor is the one making these arguments. Overall this was very informative, and the graphics and tables included were excellent supplements to the article. Keep up the great work! Akandru (talk) 16:21, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
New article linked to this
[edit]Hello! I plan to create a new article linked to this current one about Black maternal mortality in the US. This new article would include sections on historical context (including trends to the present), access to peri- and post-natal care, intersection of race and SES, medical racism, and reproductive and sexual health and rights (including access to abortion). Much more detailed information can be found in my user sandbox. I welcome any feedback! Thanks! Akandru (talk) 04:16, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
- Very important and notable topic and I am so glad you are working on it, I would be happy to help. Something I read at some point which really stuck out to me is that maternal mortality is not as high in Caribbean countries. I'm wrapping up a few other things on other Wikimedia projects right now but if you don't come across a citation of that I'll try to find one in medical journals.
- P.S. Have you seen the WP:PSGMED guide to writing medical articles? Also it looks like the MeSH code for maternal mortality in general (the statistical topic, separate from the medical details of death) is D008428 but I'm not seeing one for Black maternal mortality specifically. --▸₷truthious Ⓑandersnatch◂ 04:40, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
- I would look into some of the disparities in causes of death between racial groups, specifically hypertension. There is also evidence that having a doula or birth advocate present decreases maternal mortality from hypertension. BSchilling (talk) 18:53, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Racism in medical education
[edit]I am planning to add a section on racism in medical education. I would like to expand the article to indicate disparate treatment that affects disparate health outcomes and where that stems. There are plenty of articles that cite evidence regarding racist assumptions about African Americans. I will start there. Any review would be helpful.
BSchilling (talk) 18:46, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
I think that adding a section such as this would be very helpful and definitely give perspective to the reality of racisms that African America face within medicine. If you are really interested in the topic I suggest reading Medical Apartheid Book by Harriet A. Washington it will definitely help with the research process.

I plan on adding a section on the intersection of race and gender in health care. I will mention an important policy that made some strides in healthcare for women (ACA) but I will also mention why there remains gaps in disparities among women of color- namely because of state flexibility in policy implementation & politicization of health resources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aminah2640 (talk • contribs) 19:04, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
