Fair use rationale for Image:Protector(1stEd).jpg
[edit]Image:Protector(1stEd).jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
"Inherent xenophobia"
[edit]An equally valid viewpoint is that Brennan killed the Martians because he believed that they were a potential future threat based on the two examples cited, as opposed to in retaliation for them. It's also at least plausible that, despite not posing much of a threat to humans on Earth, they would have slowed the colonization/exploitation of Mars, and Brennan wanted humanity to have the opportunity to develop that resource as quickly as possible to better enable them to face other potential threats (such as, say, the sudden arrival of additional Pak ships following Phssthpok, which didn't happen... or a warlike alien race, which did). In later works Protectors are depicted as not necessarily rabidly hostile towards other sentient species, provided that those species are helpful to whatever they regard as their gene line. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.105.71.75 (talk) 03:12, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Pronunciation of Phssthpok
[edit]Has anyone found any references to how this should be pronounced? Knowing Niven's sense of humour with names, I wonder if it's "Spock" with the S replaced by a raspberry (i.e. a Bronx cheer). Can't find this referenced and I may be way off beam. Having noticed this, I can no longer read this book without cracking up.
I have in mind Basil Fawlty's "<phssth>poons!" but the latter was way later than 1973.

Alice Jordan on Kobold
[edit]I don’t recall Brennan destroying Kobold, but wouldn’t that imply that Alice Jordan perished in the destruction? That would cause her boyfriend/protagonist to be opposed to Brennan.75.148.103.49 (talk) 09:22, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
